Introduction

This is a Distant Reader "study carrel", a set of structured data intended to help the student, researcher, or scholar use & understand a corpus.

This study carrel was created on 2021-05-24 by Eric Morgan <emorgan@nd.edu>. The carrel was created using the Distant Reader zip2carrel process, and the input was a Zip file locally cached with the name input-file.zip. Documents in the Zip file have been saved in a cache, and each of them have been transformed & saved as a set of plain text files. All of the analysis -- "reading" -- has been done against these plain text files. For example, a short narrative report has been created. This Web page is a more verbose version of that report.

All study carrels are self-contained -- no Internet connection is necessary to use them. Download this carrel for offline reading. The carrel is made up of many subdirectories and data files. The manifest describes each one in greater detail.

Size

There are 81 item(s) in this carrel, and this carrel is 3,496,145 words long. Each item in your study carrel is, on average, 43,162 words long. If you dig deeper, then you might want to save yourself some time by reading a shorter item. On the other hand, if your desire is for more detail, then you might consider reading a longer item. The following charts illustrate the overall size of the carrel.

Word Frequencies

By merely counting & tabulating the frequency of individual words or phrases, you can begin to get an understanding of the carrel's "aboutness". Excluding "stop words", some of the more frequent words include:

god, will, us, may, man, shall, things, one, yet, men, good, world, love, lord, must, great, therefore, now, first, doth, gods, much, nature, power, make, say, made, without, thing, christ, though, every, many, reason, also, see, time, life, like, come, nothing, spirit, well, hee, doe, earth, heart, true, another, body

Using the three most frequent words, the three files containing all of those words the most are A discovery of D. Iacksons vanitie. Or A perspective glasse, wherby the admirers of D. Iacksons profound discourses, may see the vanitie and weaknesse of them, in sundry passages, and especially so farre as they tende to the undermining of the doctrine hitherto received. Written by William Twisse, Doctor of Divinitie, as they say, from whom the copie came to the presse, A description of the three principles of the divine essence viz., of the un-originall eternall birth of the Holy Trinity of God ... : of man, of what he was created and to what end, and how he fell from his first glory into the angry wrathfulnesse ... : what the anger of God, sinne, death the Devill, and hell are ... / written in the German language, anno 1619, by Jacob Beme., and Atheomastix clearing foure truthes, against atheists and infidels: 1. That, there is a God. 2. That, there is but one God. 3. That, Iehouah, our God, is that one God. 4. That, the Holy Scripture is the Word of that God. All of them proued, by naturall reasons, and secular authorities; for the reducing of infidels: and, by Scriptures, and Fathers, for the confirming of Christians. By the R. Reuerend Father in God, Martin Fotherby, late Bishop of Salisbury. The contents followes, next after the preface..

The most frequent two-word phrases (bigrams) include:

verse chapter, let us, every one, roman non, god will, holy ghost, jesus christ, god doth, one another, must needs, english books, early english, every thing, every man, books online, nothing else, divine nature, shall come, one thing, god himselfe, tells us, will make, make us, gods will, page images, good things, will give, whole world, text creation, creation partnership, shall see, may see, love god, many times, hee will, god may, will say, gods decree, many things, take away, will never, tell us, much lesse, wicked men, take heed, wee must, man may, vnto god, may bee, first principle

And the three file that use all of the three most frequent phrases are A good and seasonable caveat for Christians. Delivered in a sermon at the funerall of the right worshipfull Sir Charles Shirley, Knight and baronet, in the parish church of Breedon, in Leicester-Shire. / By John Wilson, Master of Arts, and preacher of Gods word in the sayd parish. 7. Octob. 1646. Imprimatur, Jo. Downame. Tustins observations, or Conscience embleme the watch of God, similized by the wakefull dog. / By me John Tustin, who hath beene plundered and spoyled by the Patentees for white and gray Soape eighteene severall times to his utter undoing., and The Parliament of instrvctjons; for, the relief of afflicted, persecuted, and plundered Christians. / Written by H.T. one of the Parliaments soldiers, who hath since lost his life in the service..

While often deemed superficial or sophomoric, rudimentary frequencies and their associated "word clouds" can be quite insightful:

Keywords

Sets of keywords -- statistically significant words -- can be enumerated by comparing the relative frequency of words with the number of times the words appear in an entire corpus. Some of the most statistically significant keywords in the carrel include:

god, lord, man, tcp, christ, world, spirit, nature, gods, father, church, religion, law, earth, soul, power, scripture, reason, love, divine, thing, men, king, good, life, providence, apostle, psal, justice, goodness, creatures, body, wisdom, holy, word, saviour, laws, gospel, ghost, author, thy, sunne, son, sin, roman, philosophers, people, mercy, heaven, haue

And now word clouds really begin to shine:

Topic Modeling

Topic modeling is another popular approach to connoting the aboutness of a corpus. If the study carrel could be summed up in a single word, then that word might be god, and The Christians converse with God, or, The insufficiency and uncertainty of human friendship and the improvement of solitude in converse with God with some of the author''s breathings after him / by Richard Baxter ... is most about that word.

If the study carrel could be summed up in three words ("topics") then those words and their significantly associated titles include:

  1. god - Practical discourses concerning obedience and the love of God. Vol. II by John Scott ...
  2. god - A discovery of D. Iacksons vanitie. Or A perspective glasse, wherby the admirers of D. Iacksons profound discourses, may see the vanitie and weaknesse of them, in sundry passages, and especially so farre as they tende to the undermining of the doctrine hitherto received. Written by William Twisse, Doctor of Divinitie, as they say, from whom the copie came to the presse
  3. god - Atheomastix clearing foure truthes, against atheists and infidels: 1. The contents followes, next after the preface.

If the study carrel could be summed up in five topics, and each topic were each denoted with three words, then those topics and their most significantly associated files would be:

  1. god, shall, things - Practical discourses concerning obedience and the love of God. Vol. II by John Scott ...
  2. god, unto, gods - A discovery of D.
  3. god, thou, soule - A description of the three principles of the divine essence viz., of the un-originall eternall birth of the Holy Trinity of God ... : of man, of what he was created and to what end, and how he fell from his first glory into the angry wrathfulnesse ... : what the anger of God, sinne, death the Devill, and hell are ... / written in the German language, anno 1619, by Jacob Beme.
  4. god, vnto, haue - Atheomastix clearing foure truthes, against atheists and infidels: 1. The contents followes, next after the preface.
  5. god, thou, thy - An alarum to England sounding the most fearefull and terrible example of Gods vengeance, that euer was inflicted in this world vpon mankind for sinne: seruing generally as a warning for all people to eschew sinne, lest they partake of the like vengeance. By Robert Gray, preacher of the Word of God.
