(This career field requires an education major.) HISTORIANS preserve a corporate memory with which to apply lessons of the past to current issues. They produce detailed historical reports, analytical studies, and books of significant Air Force operations and activities. HUMAN RESOURCE SPECIALISTS provide support to managers in achieving effective and economical management of the civilian workforce. Support is provided in the areas of Employee Development, Employee Relations, Personnel Systems Management, Position Classification, Staffing and Affirmative Employment, etc., fostering an attitude of service to all customers and developing communication among management, employees, and employee organizations. INFORMATION MANAGEMENT ANALYSTS conduct studies and analyses to evaluate records, publications, forms, publications and forms distribution management programs and reprographics management capabilities. They also conduct studies to evaluate office automation systems and their incorporation into existing and future systems. LOGISTICS personnel are involved in keeping all major defense systems and related support systems operational on a day-to-day basis in support of the Air Force mission. MANPOWER MANAGEMENT ANALYSTS advise on the most effective use of manpower resources and organization structures. MORALE, WELFARE and RECREATION and CHILD DEVELOPMENT personnel provide a variety of recreation, hospitality and child development services to meet the physical fitness, early childhood education and leisure time needs of Air Force personnel and their family members. (Child Development positions require child development or early childhood education majors.) PUBLIC AFFAIRS specialists perform a combination of duties involving writing news releases, working with media and community representatives and conducting programs which integrate the Air Force into community life. Their efforts are devoted to ensuring a free flow of communication between the Air Force and the public. SAFETY and OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH SPECIALISTS and SAFETY ENGINEERS plan, develop and manage programs to ensure maximum protection of Air Force personnel and resources. They also provide guidance and recommendations regarding established safety methods and techniques. (Requires major in safety or occupational health. Engineering positions require a professional engineering degree from an ABET-accredited institution.) SECURITY SPECIALISTS plan, develop and manage programs designed to protect classified defense information and resources from unauthorized disclosures, theft, assault, and sabotage. Work is performed in the areas of information, physical, industrial, personnel, and aerospace security systems. SCIENTIST and ENGINEER professionals provide a broad foundation of expertise required to develop and support the technological needs of the Air Force. To sustain the National Defense effort on the leading edge of explosive technological advancement, the Air Force civilian professional receives opportunities to do graduate course work in addition to practical on-the-job training in diverse areas of ‘high-tech’ specializations. (These positions require an education major or current state teachers certificate.)BENEFITS • INSURANCE • RETIREMENT VACATION In addition to 10 paid holidays each year, civilian employees receive annual vacation leave based on length of service: • 13 working days per year for the first 3 years • 20 working days per year from the 4th to 15 year • 26 working days per year from the 15th year OTHER PAID LEAVE Each employee is allowed 13 days of sick leave each year. There is no limit to the sick leave that can be accumulated. Leave is also granted for jury duty and certain military duty at no cost to the employee. INSURANCE Employees are eligible for comprehensive health insurance and have a choice among many excellent plans. The Government pays a substantial portion of the health insurance premium. In addition, employees are eligible for low-cost Federal employees’ group life insurance with optional coverage of spouses. Federal employees are covered by a three-tiered retirement system which consists of a pension plan, social security coverage, and a thrift plan. This system is similar to many in the private sector. It offers full retirement benefits at age 57, which is earlier than most private sector systems allow.
