Which appdare herewith. "The course should be planned for the individual

student and adapted to his locality. That a comparative view of the whole
may ba given It should covar (1) all library economy but the course should
be flexible and only a minimum amount of work in each topic required so
that the extra work may be ftiven to each puril in what he needs (2) A

member of the faculty should visit the library of the applicant previous
to the opening cf the school, noting its technical needs, the social oon-
dltlons of the town unci along what lines the possibilities for library
development. (3) The number of students should be lirited in relation t©
the number of the faculty so that this individual work bs possible.

In a six weeks tern (a) (b) (c) (d) are major courses and re-
quire five hours per day.

(a) Cataloging—18 hours-

1	hour three times per week, followed by a minimum of 2 hours®
practice; more with advanced students who expect to do independent
cataloging.

(to) Classlflcations—12 hours-

2	hours per week closely correlated with subject work in cataloging

(e) Reference—-10 hours

6 lectures and 4 eeminarsj 3 hours9 per week minimum; and 6 or 8 for
advanced workers.

This work to cover only books found in the libraries visited,
with annotated li nt? for suggestions in buying say for the next four
years.

(d) Book- select ion (including bibliography, periodicals, binding, etc.)
1 hour per day; 4 hours per week practice as minimum

Study of books already found in libraries visited.

Among the shorter courses are.

The Committee woiild also point out the advisability of limiting the

number of students; and emphasize the importance of the relative time

to to* .given to practical work ^ince these two considerations enter into

the quality of the work done by the schools. If practice work and careful

provision are required for all technical subjects, it will of necessity

l%ait the number that can be given proper supervision; otherwise the

(3)	Equipment for practice work- In order to accomplish the beet
results in such a short period and working under unusual pressure, it

seems imperative that the physical and material conditions for the work
should bd the beet possible. There should be two rooms provided for the
students use; a lecture room and a practice room, providing a desk and
conveniences for each student. The advantages of the two rooms, is evi-
dent, providing fpr the moving about and changing of location and position
at the end of each period.

Books for practice work are the first essential, and after careful
selection of titles suited to illustrate each of the points brought out ir
class instruction in both cataloging and classification, there should be
a sufficient number of copies provided of each book, so that practice work
may be carried forward promptly without students being compelled to wait
for books. This is based on the assumption that the practice work for
each day rust be handed in at the C&0&6 of the day's work for revision
ready for discussion the following day#

Supplies used by the students are usually purchased by them and should
be on sale at the school.

(4)	Final examination. The Committee unanimously disagree as to
final examinations. One is convinced of their value as a method of study,
not as a test of knowledge nor of xork accomplished; the second is opposed
to them; and the third is in favor of them to the degree that this examina-
tion should take precedence of the daily.work in showing her mastery of

technical details of the work.

(5)	The Certificate. A card 3x5 inches seems the most desirable form,
being simple and unpretentious and the size and shape of most of the li-
brary records.

The words "Summer School" seem the natural and easy term to dis-
tinguish this certificate as a definite reaning has betteme attached to it
in the educational system of the country.Tiie statement on the face should, be general with sore detailed
natter on the reverse, as per enclosed sample.

The certificate should be signed "by the director alone, but the
heading of the card should give the institution of commission under
wko*e auspices the school is conducted.

The back of the certificate should stats the rmrpose of the school) th
major studies included in the course; and recommendation to the regular li-
brary schools for mors responsible positions.

The only answar to the question- what "completes* the course— seeeni to
fee to leavs th© interpretation of that term to the director.

ship in the small libraries of the state. Instruction include® ele-
mentary cataloging, classification, reference work, "book selection
and minor subjects. Ho attempt is n.ade to train exparlenced people
for advanced library work, and a year's course in a regular library
school is considered essential to prepare librarians for responsible
positions.
