GENERAL PRACTICE RESIDENT SPECIALTY RESIDENT GERIATRIC FELLOW STAFF DENTIST SALARY: The salary of a dental general practice resident is recommended by the House Staff Review Committee through the VA/ University Deans Committee and varies according to geographical location. The salary of a dental specialty resident is recommended by the House Staff Review Committee through the VA/Univers-ity Deans Committee and varies according to geographical location. Residencies are conducted in the following specialties: Oral Surgery, Prostho-dontics, Periodontology, Oral Pathology, Endodontics, and Dental Public Health. A training program is also available in Dental Anesthesiology. The salary of a dentist geriatric fellow is established at the VA Central Office level within guidelines set by the Office of Academic Affairs (141). Grade and salary are determined by the VACO Professional Standards Board based on experience and other qualifications. Current salaries for full-time VA Dentists are shown below: Grade Associate Full Intermediate Senior Chief These salary levels include a minimum allowance of $2,501 per year. Dentists may also receive additional allowances based on such factors as supervisory level, length of service, and geographical location of the employing medical center. REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. 1. No license required for a 1-year GP residency: however, candidate must meet any censure or other equivalent requirements established for residents of non-VA hospitals with which the VA Medical Center concerned is affiliated for training purposes. 2. Graduate of a foreign dental school must have successfully completed parts I and II of the National Board examination. 3. The licensure requirements for the 2-year GP residency program are the same as for the specialty programs. 1. 1 year approved dental general practice residency or 1 year post- graduate training in basic sciences or suitable equivalent. 2. Graduates of a foreign dental school must have successfully completed parts I and II of the National Board examination. 3. Secure license to practice in one of the States or District of Columbia before second year of VA residency or, for integrated programs, meet any registration or other equivalent requirements established for residents of non-VA hospitals with which the VA Medical Center concerned is affiliated for training purposes. 1. Meets requirements for appointment as a staff dentist. 2. Additionally, must satisfy one of the following: a. Completion of a one-year general practice residency and one year of general practice; or b. Completion of a two-year general practice residency; or c. Completion of a specialty program in periodontics, prosthodontics, dental public health or oral pathology; or d. Five years continuous service as a VA dentist; or e. Unique educational or basic science background adjudged equivalent to one of the above by the Office of Academic Affairs (141). Must be a citizen of the United States. Must hold a degree of D.D.S. or D.M.D., or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Must hold a full, unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Must have had at least one postgraduate year of hospital training in the form of a residency program (general practice or a specialty); or comparable experience as a dentist member of a hospital medical staff actively involved in hospital dental care.
