BECKWITH KINDERGARTEN DIRECTOR STATE NORMAL SCHOOL, WHITEWATER WIS. .' • • ■ ■ , CHICAGO ROW, PETERSON & COMPANY 1907 Copyright 1907 BY GRACE E. SALISBURY and MARIE E„ BECKWITH >r Reading Room Only z INTRODUCTORY In issuing this index, a word concerning its origin and scope seems necessary. For many years the need of a convenient guide to stories for the use of the teacher has been felt. It is a difficult matter to put into the hands of either a child or a teacher, on a moment's notice, a five or ten minute story on the beaver, the moon, truth, truancy, or any other of the hundred and one subjects sometimes called for within a week. Especially in connection with the kindergarten and primary work has this been felt. As a re- sult the stories in over a hundred books have been read and entered under such subject headings as seemed likely to prove useful. No attempt has been made to discriminate between books having literary value and those lacking it. All stories that seemed capable of adaptation for oral work have been included in all cases where we have deemed the thought in them worthy of considera- tion. Story-telling rather than story-reading has been the upper- most thought. From some books we have picked but a single story of all those given, and that because of its central thought. No attempt has been made to present an exhaustive index. All country headings have been omitted, and all personal head- ings excepting Lincoln and Washington. Our rule has been to enter a story under the specific heading when a choice was necessary, except in cases where we thought the general heading would be more likely to be consulted. In many cases a story has been indexed under various headings. An attempt has been made to group such stories as are based on the same legend, or folk-tale ; but owing to the fact that such a va- riety of titles are applied to the same story by different editors or 4 INTBODUCTORY compilers, and to the fact that the two editors of this index have worked on entirely different groups of books, in all probability many stories will be found having the same basis, and yet indexed under different headings. The paging given refers to the particular edition of the book listed in the appendix. No effort has been made to trace any story to its original source. The editor or compiler of the book has been treated as the editor-author, the object of the index being merely to bring together the teacher and the story with the least possible expendi- ture of time and effort. We wish to acknowledge the courtesy of A. C. McClurg & Company and the Milton Bradley Company in furnishing us with a number of valuable books for use in our work.
