 The principle of expressing ter, dcr, or </*er, by doubling the 
 length of a curve, as shown in the " Manual, of Phonography," 
 par. 106, is now extended to the straight letters, but care will be 
 necessary in some cases to prevent ambiguity. 
 
 Practice in reporting will lead the thoughtful writer to insert a 
 vowel in any word that, without it, would be liable to be read as 
 some other word. For want of the vowel e in the last syllable of 
 the outline that represents righteousness, a reporter made Sir 
 Wilfrid Lawson speak of " that wise policy which recognises the 
 rights of all mankind, and which is based on that spirit of 
 reticence (for righteousness) which alone exalteth a nation." 
 (Proverbs 14. 34, " Eighteousness exalteth a nation, but sin is a 
 reproach to any people.") But more strange than the original 
 mistake, which was necessarily commited in haste, was the repe- 
 tition of it in the Times a day or two afterwards. The reporter 
 ought to have known that the outline /L represented righteous- 
 ness. The less common word reticence should be written 
 
 Some words are neatly and quickly written by lengthened 
 urves, as 
 
 matter, mother, enter, neuter, father, fetter, feature, 
 
 future, order, theatre, Easter, letter, alter, shutter.

 A few words have two letters in addition ; as 
 
 projector, inspector, obttructer, regulator, legislator, detractor,

 The vowels may be omitted in Reporting, and especially in the
