THE CATALOGUE OF BOOKS FROM THE LIBRARIES OR COLLECTIONS OF CELEBRATED BIBLIOPHILES AND ILLUSTRIOUS PERSONS OF THE PAST MARIE DE MEDICIS. THE CATALOGUE OF BOOKS FROM THE LIBRARIES OR COLLECTIONS OF CELEBRATED BIBLIOPHILES AND ILLUSTRIOUS PERSONS OF THE PAST WITH ARMS OR DEVICES UPON THE BINDINGS EXHIBITED AT THE GROLIER CLUB IN THE MONTH OF JANUARY i895 NEW-YORK PUBLISHED BY THE GROLIER CLUB MDCCCXCV Copyright, 1895, by THE GROLIER CLUB INTRODUCTION \ [HE Club has lately held an exhibition of book- plates, or, as better known in the language of the learned, of " ex-libris." These, de- signed, engraved, and printed, more or less artistically, and pasted upon the inside of book-covers, serve as marks of ownership ; also as advertisements for the return of strayed or stolen volumes. The book-plate, however, is no guarantee as to the past or present ownership of the book in which it is found, for the person who might hesitate to remove a fine old title- page or frontispiece may not scruple to transfer a book- plate, especially if it be that of a noted personage, and thus endow a favored tome with a more illustrious pedigree. Doubtless no real bibliophile would yield to such temptation. One may imagine that this state of affairs was antici- pated by some old lovers of their books when they inscribed their names upon the title-pages to identify themselves with their volumes. If kings and princes, Montaigne, Melancthon, and Grolier himself, did such things, as they all occasionally did, we are prone, if the signature be authentic, to condone the offense, and to vii viii INTRODUCTION cherish the writing with some feeling of veneration. As a rule, however, inscriptions of this character are but an unprofitable vandalism. It is evident that every collector or owner of a library cannot well have all of his books bound or rebound, with his arms, name, or device stamped upon them; much less is he justified in making such additions to the bindings of fine old books, although there are in- stances of this species of vandalism. The custom of identifying in some manner books with their owners is as old as books themselves. In the early manuscripts personal insignia, or coats of arms, are frequently found emblazoned or interwoven in the dec- oration of the pages. They were also inserted in the painted borders of early printed books, and one would perhaps prefer incunabula with such proprietary records. With the introduction, early in the sixteenth century, of bookbindings in morocco and calf-skin, susceptible of delicate and elaborate ornamentation, came the custom, with the more wealthy bibliophile, of causing his name, monogram, or arms to be stamped upon the sides as part of the decoration. With the revival of art and letters came also that of individuality, but we have to regret that the artists so often forgot to record themselves; more mindful of their work and the glorification of their patrons than of their own merit. It is not an idle curiosity which seeks to know something of the men who bound and decorated the fine old books of the sixteenth century, and worked upon them the names of Maioli and Grolier, or the arms INTRODUCTION ix and mottoes of Frangois I, Henri II, or Diane de Poi- tiers. It is a strange fate which links illustrious names with those of the modest bookbinders Clovis Eve, Le Gascon, Boyer, and their successors, making them, even after a lapse of three hundred years, as household words to every lover of books. The exhibition described in this catalogue is a tribute to the memory of the enlightened bibliophile and his bookbinder; a page from history and art. A French- man would call it an assemblage of "livres de proven- ance," a term for which there is no exact phrase in Eng- lish. After the author who creates the books comes the reader, the appreciative owner and legitimate guardian of them, and as such we remember Maioli, Grolier, Cor- vinus, Count d'Hoym, De Thou, the Medicis and Cardi- nal Amboise, as we do the royal patrons of literature and art, many of whom are represented in this exhibition. A person to whom a book is no better than a news- paper should experience a slight glow of curiosity, if not of interest, at seeing the volume of verses by the favorite poet of Henri IV of France the identical copy owned by the king, with his arms and the H's on its vellum sides. As we look upon it we think of the massacre of St. Bar- tholomew, when he was saved by Catharine de Me- dicis ; of the battle of Ivry ; of his jovial moments and of Ravaillac; also of Marguerite de Valois and her books with their marguerites and motto, " Expectata non Eludet." The volumes belonging to Catharine her- self, and to Marie de Medicis, complete the tableau. x INTRODUCTION There is also exhibited the book of the great surgeon, Ambroise Pare, upon his new method of healing wounds, instead of burning them with boiling oil and hot irons the identical copy he had printed on vellum and presented to Henri II. Of books belonging to this king and to Diane de Poitiers there are several, with the royal arms and the monograms H D and the crescents. Geometry was a favorite study of Francois I, and the " Livre Singulier et utile touchant Tart et practique de geometric, " by Charles Bouvelle, printed at Paris in 1542, is the king's copy, a beautiful specimen of binding, with his arms on the sides, and the crowned F's, the salamanders, and tongues of flame. Incomplete as it is, the list is still a long one: Riche- lieu, Anne of Austria, Mazarin, Bossuet, the Henris and the Louis of France, Mile, de Montpensier, Mmes. de Maintenon, La Valliere, Pompadour, Du Barry; books of Marie Leczinska, queen of France, and her father Stanislaus, king of Poland, who established his exiled court at Nancy, and made it a miniature Paris ; of the daughters of Louis XV; of Marie Antoinette; together with many volumes in the rich old French moroccos of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, stamped with the arms of prelates, nobles, and noted persons. If comparatively few books bearing marks of Eng- lish ownership are found in this catalogue, it is prin- cipally owing to the fact that Englishmen of the "olden time " were not addicted to bibliophilism in the modern acceptance of the term ; otherwise they would have INTRODUCTION xi exacted from the printer greater care in the execution of his work, and preserved, in some measure, the tradi- tions of Caxton, Wynkyn de Worde and Pynson, few if any of whose books, however, have come down to us bearing upon their covers the insignia of royal or dis- tinguished owners. The best English bindings of the sixteenth and sev- enteenth centuries are evidently by foreign craftsmen, probably Huguenot workmen who fled from religious persecution in France. There are examples exhibited from the libraries of Robert Dudley, earl of Leicester ; Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I; Charles II; John Evelyn ; Sir Kenelm Digby; Queen Anne and others. Quaritch, the London bookseller, designates some of the finest bindings executed in England in the sixteenth century as " English Groliers." It is true the geomet- rical patterns upon the covers play their part as scenic effects, but the dramatis personae are missing. The gatherer of books is sometimes apt to consider not so much the volumes he has, as those he does not possess, and many coveted names will be found missing from this bibliophile muster-roll. It may, however, be truthfully asserted that no such representative exhibition has ever before taken place in America. ILLUSTRATIONS FACING PAGE MARIE DE MEDICIS Frontispiece JEAN GROLIER i THO.
