 a soldier's portfolio as being characteristic studies 
 of the infinite variety of types to be met with 
 among the native races of our Indian Empire. 
 Familiar to the Indian official, soldier, and 
 sportsman, it is hoped, that in spite of obvious 
 shortcomings, they may be of interest to the 
 public at home. The original drawings, here 
 faithfully reproduced, were made under difficult 
 conditions and amidst strange surroundings, 
 during nine years' foreign service with the 
 Gordon Highlanders.
