 INTEODUCTION. 
 
 I HAVE long contemplated the preparation of the follow- 
 injjj form of family devotion. A great multitude of books 
 for this purpose have been issued from time to time, but in 
 most of them the prayers are so long, and depart so widely 
 from the Liturgical spirit of the Prayer-book, that they 
 soon become wearisome. There are other compositions of 
 a proper Liturgical character, but most of these are very 
 elaborate, and their use requires that an expensive book 
 shall be in the hands of each member of the family. 
 
 The present compilation is an attempt to provide for the 
 Family Altar the animation and spirit of Liturgical wor- 
 ship, and at the same time present a form of devotion so 
 simple, and so easily adapted to the varying exigencies of 
 a family from day to day, that it may suffice for the briefest 
 as well as for the longest time that may be desirable for 
 such a Service. 
 
 For this purpose the Prayer-book is taken as the founda- 
 tion, and its partial use prescribed, so that those additions 
 need only be preserved as a thin pamphlet within the cover 
 of the Prayer-book, The Versicles, which give so much 
 life and community of feeling to all social worship, arc the 
 same as in the Morning and Evening Prayer of the Church, 
 with the addition of several beautiful petitions from the 
 English Prayer-book, which are, unfortunately, omitted 
 from our own. 
 
 A few of the additional Collects are taken from Bishop 
 Jeremy Taylor; but the greater number from the same 
 primitive sources from which those now in tlie Prayer-book 
 were derived. Every one will be struck with the similarity,

 Christian Liturgies has largely taken the place of the brief 
 doxologies which occurred at the end of every prayer in the 
 ancient Service of the Temple and Synagogue. It should 
 always be uttered with fervor and force. I have long 
 thought that the frequent "Amen," or other brief response, 
 with which our Methodist brethren in former times used 
 to interrupt the continuous flow of the Minister's long 
 prayer, was an instinctive protest of the devout soul against 
 that unhappy innovation which had deprived the people of 
 the beauty, the animation, and the fervid sympathy of a 
 common worship, by abandoning the glorious Liturgy of 
 their fathers. Let those who have retained that rich inher- 
 itance see to it that the Liturgy be always so rendered that . 
 all may feel its power and be filled with its spirit. 
 
 The head of every family is a member of the oldest 
 Priesthood in the world, and will be held by the great 
 High Priest to a strict account for the faithful discharge 
 of the duties of that awfully responsible oflice. The souls 
 given unto his keeping will be required at his hands. May 
 this effort to help that Priesthood, and to increase the 
 beauty and attractiveness of the Family Altar, be graciously 
 accepted and blessed by the God and Father of all the 
 families of the earth.

 graciously sent us into this world to work 
 out our salvation, enable us to drive away all such 
 unquiet and worldly thoughts as may hinder us 
 in the practice of those duties which Thou hast 
 required; and while it shall please Thee to con- 
 tinue us in this life, let us serve Thee in active 
 zeal, and patient expectation, till the time in 
 which the soul which Thou receivest shall be 
 satisfied with knowledge. Grant this, O Lord,

 body, but also in his soul, he may experience 
 Thy healings; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

 OGOB, by Whose command the moments 
 of our life run their course; receive our 
 prayers for Thy servants lying sick, on whose 
 behalf we implore Thy mercy; that our fears 
 on account of their danger may be turned into

 LOOK mercifully, O Lord, we beseech Thee, on
