A groove is turned inside the nut, A, which catch- es the head of the key, B, and thus draws them up to tighten the work. In the outside of the nut, A, is a taper hole, which the pin, D, fits, and answers for a wrench. This, like any Man- drel, requires a true hole to make a true job. HORTON'S PATENT LATHE CHUCK, COMPLETE AND IN PARTS. By enclosing the circular wrought-iron rack in the deep groove in the back plate, and then turning the centre faces of back and front plates true, a perfectly tight casing for the gearing is made, thus preventing the ingress of dirt, chips, etc. Remove the rack, especially from the four jaws, and an indepen- dent jaw-chuck is made, thus combining two chucks in one. E. HORTON'S IMPROVED CHUCK JAWS. Patented August 26, 1873. A raised seat, A A, is intro- duced on the face of the jaws, on which the work rests while turning. A groove or recess, formed in the corner of the bite and face of the jaw, removes and rounds out the same. An emery-wheel may be used for grinding off the raised parts, A A, so that work coming to a sharp corner will rest on the ground seat, A, and the bite of the jaw only, and assume a true position thereon. STEPHENS' PATENT PARALLEL BENCH VISES. 2-in. Swivel Vise, $4 75. Shows working parts Cam and Toggle. 2-m. Flat or Stationary Vise, $4. The above right-hand cut shows the Stephens Flat Vise with top removed, and working parts exposed to view. It consists simply of a toggle, G G, and tooth-bar, t, held together by a spring, S, all worked by a cam, C, and hook, M, on the handle, H. A steel rack, T, is inserted in the sliding-bar, B B. The sliding-bar is here seen disengaged, free to slide in or out, with perfect ease, to its extreme limits. At the first start of the handle outward, the hook, M, slips from the tooth, M, and the spring, S, draws down upon the hook at U, firmly setting the tooth-bar, t, against the rack, T ; as the handle is pulled further outward, the cam is brought to bear against the ridge, n, nearly straightening the toggle, and forcing the movable jaw with great power against the object between the jaws. Jaws 2 inches wide ; open 2% inches. Important. Occasionally rub one drop of oil on the cam, C, and hook, M. Never oil any other part. 40 FRASSE AND COMPANY, Swivel Vise on the Table-Clamp.
