The earliest admissions at this Temple are those in 1571, contained in the original book, from which the first 46 pages are missing. At this period, Students certified to have been in Commons two years, and during that time to have kept the exercises of the house, paid all dues, and been of good behaviour, by the Principal and Reader for the time being of any Inn of Chancery, were admitted on payment of 20s. only. A general admittance fee was £3 6s. 8d. A special admittance fee was £6 135. 4c?., unless upon favour ; then less, as the Parliament might determine'. Sons of Benchers and nominees of Readers were admitted without payment of any fees, and were excused from Commons and Vacation Lectures. During this part of the 16th century but few Students were called to the degree of Barrister for professional advantages. Thomas Leighton, Wattlesborough, Salop. Eldest son of Sir Edward Leighton, M.P., one of Queen Elizabeth's Privy Council. Married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir William Gerard, Lord Chancellor of Ireland. He was M.P. for Salop, 39 Eliz. ; Captain of the Trained Bands of that County, and died A.D., 1601. This family, originally of Leighton, obtained Wattles- borough by a marriage with one of the co-heiresses of John Burgh, temp. Adopting the military profession he attained the rank of Captain, and died unmarried in Ireland. Anthony Hals, Efford, Devon. This place was the seat of the Hals family until after the Restoration. Anthony Bradshawe, Bradshawe, Derby. Fourth son of William Bradshawe. Settled at Belper and afterwards at Holbrook, in his native County, where he died a.d. 1614, leaving a numerous issue. 76 13 Baptist Hickes, London. Son of Kobert Hickes, a wealthy mercer, who lived in St. Pancras-lane, Cheapside, and raised a considerable Estate. He had three sons — Michael, a Secretary to Lord Burleigh ; Francis, and Baptist who joined his father in business, and by his extensive dealings with the Court for his rich silks and commodities brought from foreign parts, acquired immense wealth ; was knighted by James I., and created in 1628 Baron Hickes, of llmington, and Viscount Campden with remainder to his son-in-law Edward, Lord Noel. He built Hicks' Hall, ■ in London, and a stately mansion at Chipping Campden, County Gloucester. A tomb of rare excellence, the workmanship of Messrs. Stone, exists in Campden Church to his memory. He acquired the special favour of Queen Elizabeth, by whom he was knighted, and who augmented his Estate by a grant of Lordship of Godalming. He was Treasurer to Henry, Prince of Wales ; Chancellor of the Order of the Garter ; and Lieutenant of the Tower. In 1603 he entertained the King and Queen at Losely, and in 1606 the King was again his visitor ; in 1617 Charles, Prince of Wales, was his guest.
