 THE FOOTLIGHT CLUB

IN December, 1876, a few young people of
Jamaica Plain met to consider the desira-
bility of forming a local Amateur Dramatic Club,
and on January 4, 1877, a formal organization
was effected. Five weeks later the first perform-
ance of The FootlightQub was given in the little
German Theatre at Boylston Station, that being
the only place which was available at the time.
The play presented was "A Scrap of Paper."
Nearly thirty years have passed, and to-night in
commemoration of the one hundredth perform-
ance the same play is reproduced. There still
remain a few of the original members who wit-
nessed or took part in the initial performance,
and who will recall the modest beginning of what
seemed to many a doubtful experiment.

The Club was obliged to win its way. Start-
ing with an Active Membership of thirty and an
 Associate Membership of seventy-five (increased
during the first year to one hundred), the Asso-
ciate List was not entirely filled for a year and
a half. It is interesting to note that of one hun-
dred and twenty-seven members of both classes
elected during the first year but ninety-two ac-
tually joined, while to-day, with an Active Mem-
bership of sixty-five and an Associate Member-

ship of two hundred and seventy-five, there are
one hundred and sixty-two names on the Wait-
ing List. The year 1878 saw the Associate List
filled; the Waiting List was started, and the Club
was firmly on its feet. Since then but one person
(in 1884) has declined an election.

The Club continued to play in the German
Theatre until the autumn of 1 878, when its per-
formances were transferred to Eliot Hall, and
the Associates increased to one Hundred and
twenty-five. There was no further change until
1884, when the present system of repeating each
play was inaugurated, one half of the members
attending each night ; this not only allowed the
addition of more members, but afforded space
for the raising of the seats, an improvement
which was much appreciated by the audiences.
In 1889, Eliot Hall passed into the hands of its
present owners, and was enlarged and thoroughly
remodeled, the Trustees of the property leav-
ing largely in the hands of the Club the details
which particularly affected their interests. In
January, 1890, the fiftieth performance was cele-
 brated in the new building.

With the autumn play of 1902 The Footlight
Orchestra made its first appearance, and since
then has added much to the enjoyment of the
performances. Organized by one of the Active
Members, rehearsing at the homes of friends
of the Club, who kindly gave the use of their
houses for the purpose, its work has been thor-
oughly appreciated, particularly as only a portion
of the performers could become actual members,
on account of the necessary limit of membership.

Since the organization of the Club, one hun-
dred regular performances have been given, at
which ninety-nine different plays have been pro-
duced. The accompanying copies of the pro-

grammes give in a condensed form the results
of its work, and will doubtless be found of
 interest to the members.

The success of an Amateur Dramatic Club
must be judged solely from the amateur stand-
point, for the limitations which necessarily at-
tend the work of such an organization cannot
always be overcome even by the most careful
and painstaking endeavor. The Footlight has
always adhered to the amateur standard, the in-
struction of the casts being solely in the hands
of its own Acting Managers, appointed, like the
 performers, from the Active List.

In approaching the completion of its thirtieth
year, the causes of the Club's prosperity during
so long a period of existence may naturally be
sought. The first is the ready and cheerful com-
pliance on the part of the Active Members with
a system of strict but self-imposed regulations,
in accordance with which the Club is managed,
joined with an earnest effort to advance in every
way the interests of the Club ; and the second
is the loyal, cordial, and generous support which
the Associates have given from the first per-
 formance to the one hundredth.
