Oil thoroughly at working points before use, and weekly thereafter. . Place near a window, if convenient, in good light. THB TYPE, — In opening packages lay them on a table and unroll carefully: let them stand upright on the paper and place something heavy along each side to keep them from falling. Carefully remove the string around the font. If the type is quite small or seems loose, saturate a sponge with water and let a few drops fall on every part of the faces, which will run between the letters, making them adhere together and stand up. (Such wetting is often done to forms that must be moved about.) The letters of a kind generally will be found together; in separating them go through a row or line before commencing another. Arrange type in cases as shown in diagram of case elsewhere. If any letters are missing, look over the case as similar appearing letters like b, d, p, q, and n, u, v, frequently become mixed by inexperienced hands. Two or more fonts may be put in one case if considerably different in size so as to be readily distinguished. TO SET TYPE. — For most type forms a composing stick is used. The movable slide is set at a point leaving space inside the width of the desired form. Fasten slide firmly by the screw. Hold stick in left hand, open side from you, slide to the left. Commence setting in the letters at the left with nicks in the side of the type jrom you. After each word place a medium sized space (3 m, the size of which three placed together will make a square orm), which gives distance between the words when printed. At end of Ime if there is some space, yet not enough to allow part of a word, properly divided, increase space between words by thin space and have about uniform space between words. Every line should be spaced out so as to be tight in the stick, and sometimes spaces have to be cut out of card. By carefully examining printed matter similar to such as you are setting, you will observe how to space. Between lines, if space is desired, put one or more leads, pieces of thin strips of metal, cut length of form you are setting. When several lines are set, place a lead at top and bottom, set stick down, grasp the form at the side from you with the first finger of each hand, and the side towards you with the thumbs, letting the second fingers come against the ends of the lines; pressing tightly on all sides lift carefully from the stick and place in chase. Experience enables us to thus handle a stick jull. Repeat this till form is completed in chase. Forms may be set without a composing stick, by arranging furniture in chase to size desired, picking out words from case and placing in chase as fast as set. In this way the fingers are used as a composing stick, liOCKING UP FORM. — Having completed a form in the chase, which should set before you with screws towards you, and top line of form towards you, or else to the left, place it as near centre of chase as pos- sible. Outside the form, the long way of the chase, fill up with long pieces of wood furniture, and at the ends fill up with metal furniture, hollow metal blocks. Iron strips are provided for the screws to bear on in locking up Make sure the lines are all. the same length and everything properly justi- fied, that is true and square, so that pressure will hold all evenly. Now turn screws just enough to press form lightly together, then lay a smooth surfaced block (planer) upon the form and strike light blows on top with a mallet to push down any letters which may stick up above others. Now lock up firmly by the screws, holding the fingers of one hand firmly on the furniture near the screws to prevent it from springing up. Bottom of chase must be cleaned of dirt or rust occasionally. Never allow type or furniture to project below bottom level of chase as it will prevent locking in bed properly. PRKSS 'WORK. — Slide the chase into position on press. Cut out a sheet of medium heavy paper, width of platen, and long enough for the ends to turn over and be fastened by the bands, drawing it down smooth and tight over the platen. Under this outside sheet place from three to si?? more sheets of paper according to job. The additional sheets need only be just the size of the platen. For light, small forms, cards, etc., only three (if four sheets are necessary. For heavy forms, electrotypes, large forms, etc., use five or six sheets. Sheets of soft bedding, such as blotting paper, rub- ber sheeting, woolen cloth, are sometimes used on heavy forms, under the first platen sheet, but never on small printing. All being ready, put on the impression without ink once, working carefully lest impression be too heavy and injure the type. Be careful that the grippers are set so to just catch edges of the sheet, but not hit and injure the type form. Care should be taken never to throw lower impression screws too far forward and thus pre- vent full leverage of press. Turn on impression screws to bring out a firm impression. Clean ink table of all dirt, put on ink about the size of a pea and with the roller, also well cleaned, roll it out thin and even on the table. Amateurs generally use too much ink; use little, roll it out well and pass roller more times over the type; especially in fine work do that. Ink must be distributed on the table by hand, either with one of the press rollers or hand roller; it is best to have a hand roller for it. Now pass t"he roller over the type, forward and back, lay a sheet of paper on platen and take an impres- sion. If not clear, or if uneven, regulate by the impression screws. When a clear impression is obtained, look it over for errors; this is "proof-reading." Mark all errors on the margin of sheet. Remove the chase from press, unlock the form so that wrong letters may be pulled out and changes made. Here bodkin and tweezers are needed. Lock up and put to press as before. Take a light impression of form on the platen sheet, which will show exactly where it will come every time, and guide you in fixing feed guides. The latter are for edges of paper to rest against when printing. Paste a quad, or very thin strip of wood on platen sheet just far enough below the print- ing to give a proper margin, one at the end the same, and feed the sheets against these in printing. The Steel Gauge Pins are a better article for this and being adjustable are a great convenience. Type sometimes varies in height slightly, and if certain lines or letters print too heavy or too light, remedy as follows: — First, be sure the pressure is even, then if a line or word is too heavy, a thickness of paper should be cut out of the second platen sheet where that part strikes it ; if a line or wood is too light a thick- ness of paper must be pasted on the platen where that part strikes. Cuts are sometimes so low that they must have one or more thicknesses of paper on the bottom of them to bring them up type high. The impressions should be so well adjusted, on nearly all jobs, that the printing will be perfectly clear upon face without showing any impression on back of paper or cards. Genera Uy jobs will dry in an hour; at other times they have to lie a day before use. CLKANING TYPES, — Type should be always cleaned immediately after using. Remove chase from press and before unlocking form, take a rag wet with benzine or turpentine and carefully wipe the faces of the whole till no ink or smut remains. Use a brush if the type gets filled up badly; a tooth brush is good. The ink table should be washed in the same way when it becomes too dirty to work well, but will not need it so often if a paper is spread over it when not in use to keep off dust. Good work is not possible if ink table is not kept bright. DISTRIBUTING TYPE. — After cleaning, unlock form, and taking a line at a time, by the aid of a lead or rule, hold it in left hand, and taking off a letter at a time drop it into its place in case, so proceeding till form is distributed. UOIjIjERS. — Our Rollers are of patent composition. They should be washed with benzine, turpentine or kerosene oil. Clean with a soft *ae wet with one of these liquids. Keep them in a cool dry, tight box. It is important to work with a clean roller. If it has become dirty, dusty. or otherwise, clean it and then let it stand an hour before use. Dometimeg ink gets stiff and does not distribute well; heat it gently by fire, but be care- ful not to heat roller. Sometimes rollers, owing to state of atmosphere, do not take ink well; pass slowly over inlc table and they will do fairly well, though they may not work right till atmosphere changes. Secure new rollers when old ones become hard. Caution: Do not attempt to print with old, dried up, hardened rollers, as good results are not possible. The best wash for rollers is benzine. ROIiliSUR MAKINCr. — It is cheaper for amateurs, generally, to buy rollers ready made, as they are sure of good ones, and at small expense and trouble. But parties at remote points may wish to make their own. Recipe — One pound best glue; one quart best sugar-house syrup; one pint of glycerine. Soak glue in rain water till pliant, then drain thoroughly; then melt it over a slow fire in a regular glue pot. When glue is well melted add syrup, boil about thirty minutes, stir thoroughly and skim off any impurities that rise. Add the other ingredients about five minutes before removing from the fire. Pour the composition slowly and while hot. The moulds may be bought ready made, or prepared as follows: Sheet brass, about one-sixteenth of an inch thick, very smoothly finished for inside, is rolled into a cylinder the desired diameter, and neatly soldered. The mould sets straight up on end. the roller stock in centre. Hold both in place and pour composition in at one side. Set whole away carefully, let stand twenty-four hours, then draw out and use. Sometimes new rollers are too "green" to use for several days. PRINTING IN COL.ORS*— Amateurs do well with color work, after due experience; but colored inks seldom work quite as easily as black- Yet color work is attractive, and, as before stated, it may be attempted when the amateur has become fairly versed in plain work. Use good col- ored inks, and the type used had better be plain. GOLD OR BRONZK PRINTING.— Is done by lightly brushing over printing, when first done, before dry with bit of cotton dipped in bronze powder. The bronze sticks to the ink, and when dried the surplus bronze may be brushed off, leaving the lettering elegantly gilded, silvered or coppered. Size is generally used instead of ink in this work, as it is more sticky and holds the bronze better. AN IMPORTANT POINT. — Selection and Care of Type, — Plain type wears best, and should form the larger part of the printer's stock though a few styles of fancy text or shaded type are desirable. Light faced type prints clearer and most satisfactory as a general thing. But proper use of type is most important. Great care must be taken that it is not subjected to unnecessary pressure, and that every letter and point is care- fully planed down, that it may not be worn by the extra pressure con-iin SPEINa •:• OPENINGS •:• READY -= The end ornaments are simply capital V and those between are made with four periods. Likewise the capital I of gothic fonts may be used as the V is used, or for a short black dash between lines. The following very neat and odd borders are set simply of brass rule with small o and asterisks: — ooooooooooooooooo German proper names often require double dots over the vowels and they are readily made by setting a colon above the letters in this manner ou. The french c can be made by inverting a figure g. Weeding Cards. -These appear best when printed in script type. Wooden wedding cards may be made appropriate by introducing one line of the rustic type which imitates wood work. Tin or Silver wedding cards should be printed with silver bronze. For Golden Wedding use gold brouz \ Dusty Cases.— To clean type cases without removing type use bellowa, a rubber ball, or an insect powder blower. Punctuation. We propose simply to notice a few points specially important to printers only, as the regular rules of punctuation are quite common. The use of parenthesis is giving away largely to the comma and generally to the benefit of the appear- ance of printing. When the former is used, i f a point follows the words enclosed it should be outside the parenthesis, thus: (the aforesaid party), Some printers appear to mis-understand the use of the period and comma to- gether ., It should be used after an abbreviation only and where wording fol- lows which would only demand a comma preceding if the abbrevated word were printed in full. Example: W. A. Kelsey & Co., the sole manufacturers. It is better not tc use it on cards, headings, etc., in a display line where the abbrev- iated word ends the line, as the period alone appears better. Every abbreviation demands a period there after, whether it be an initial or part of a word. Examples: Jan. Feb. Mon. Tue. Conn, N. Y. Fred. Geo. Chas. P. M, M. D. G. Washington. But no period follows an abbreviation when an apostrophe is used before the final letter, as Fred'k. The exclamation and interrogation points appear better if a thin space sep- arates them from words, or from each o^her if several are used togather. We close this page with a few diagrams of perperly pointed visiting cards. Many readers will deem this needless but we have seen so many violations of these simple rules that we are led to the step. Ben. F. Butler, Jr. R. Black Hayes. Will. xll. Evarts. 8ain'l Slick, i:iiiiiia May .Smith. C. D. Tooth, D. D. S. Music Type.— The printing of sheet music is hardly to be attempted by aitt» ateurs. A font of tyf" consists of many characters and costs about one hun- dred dollars. The composition is quite difllcult. Advertising Novelties. xn making an advertising card or hand bill aim to have it spicy and attrac-- tive- never common-place, A circular recently attracted our notice headed, in large type, YOU CAN DODGE AN ELEPHANT and under in a smaller type, "but you cant the fact that Crane the Grocer is the cheapest in town". A supply of white ink is necessary for tints. To }i oz white add blue the size of a pea and a rich blue tint results. So red produces pink. If a light shade and dark shade of a color are to appear in a job use the same color for the dark as is employed to produce the tint. For a plain block, to tint a large sur- face, comman pine smoothly planed, made type high, will do. Brown ink does handsome printing. To imitate the hue of certain lithographic printing mix a little blue mk with black. Better use plain faced type only in color printing. Combinations that harmonize well are. The following testimony is preserved in the family, by Jo. Fred. Stereotyping.— It is sometimes desirable to make a soUd plate from type forms, for future use or for duplicating. Lock the form in chase and oil the type very thinly with olive oil. Now lay a wood frame around f oim one half inch deep, and pour into it a thick paste of plaster paris and water. In an hour raise the plaster frame and a perfect mold is found. Dry it thoroughly in an oven. Oil mold thinly, arrange a frame around it, made of iron, likewise a thin iron plate to cover it, forming a casting box of proper depth to make your stereo- typing same height as type. Next pour in the melted metal, through a hole in the iron plate or frame. The metal cools at once and the stereotype is ready for press after being squared up carefully by filing. The metal is made up by melt- ing 1 lb of lead with 2 oz of antimony. Melt lead first and add antimony in very small broken pieces. Or old type may be used, melting it and adding a ^ 'b lead to each lb. of typ3. Electrotypes may be made in the same manner except that the plaster mold is dusted with plumbago, instead of being oiled, and placed in a battery and a copper "shell" made of the form. Stereotype metal is then nm Dto the shell to back it up.
