BAPTIST MISSIONARY SOCIETY. & a m m & PRESENTED BY UCSB VOCABULARY GALLA LANGUAGE. THE REV. J. L. KRAPF. LONDON: PRINTED FOR THE CHURCH MISSIONARY SOCIETY. 1842. LONDON : RICHARD WATTS, CROWN COURT, TEMPLE BAR. PREFACE. ANOTHER contribution to the knowledge of the Galla Lan- guage is here presented to the Public; which, it is hoped, will be favourably received, inasmuch as every additional light which is thrown on the Nations of Africa, their nature, condition, and languages, deserves to be hailed with joy and gratitude by every one who takes an interest in them, on whatever ground that interest may stand. How much the Galla Nation is entitled to a benevolent attention of the Christian Public, those who have read the Preface to Mr. Krapf 's " Grammatical Outline of the Galla Language " will be able to appreciate. That " Outline " also, together with Mr. Krapf's Scripture Translations (the whole of St. Matthew's and part of St. John's Gospel), and this Vocabu- lary, will give the student a tolerable degree of insight into the Galla Language. If a gracious Providence should please to smile upon our Mission in Shoa, the Missionaries hope to be able, whilst labouring for the good of both Abyssinians and Gallas, to furnish European inquirers with more abundant and more perfect materials regarding these and other surrounding African Nations. I think it proper to observe, that Mr. Krapf sent this Vocabulary last summer from Shoa ; having prepared it in Galla and German, not with a view to have it printed, but only to communicate it to those Missionaries who might probably be sent to his assistance, in order to aid them in preparing themselves for their work. But, as it was deemed useful to make it available to the Public, I was requested to translate the German into English, and to see it carried through the press. In doing this, I had to 11 PREFACE. mark to each word that part of speech to which it belonged, which Mr. Krapf had not done. On this account, it is possible that here and there a mistake may have been made in the translation ; although I am not aware of it, having taken the precaution, whenever I was not cer- tain, to examine in Mr. Krapf 's Translation of St. Matthew and St. John the passages where those words occur. I added, in some instances, references to the Amharic and other cognate languages : and might have carried them to a much greater extent, but that I thought this sufficient to draw the attention of inquirers to the subject, and to induce them to examine, for themselves, the relation which these languages bear to each other. For my own part, I believe that the Galla, the Dankali, and the Somali Languages form a distinct species in the same family of languages with the Abyssinian dialects, which is Semitic. The knowledge of the one greatly facilitates the learning of the rest ; and, as we have great reason to suppose that the Gallas extend themselves very far into Central Africa, who knows of how much importance this language may be to those who travel in those still-unexplored parts? May not the fact, that the Ashantees' Language in Western Africa is said to bear much resemblance to the Semitic family, suggest the thought, that possibly a chain of cognate languages stretches from the North-east of Africa to the West ? However this may be, I trust that this Vocabulary, even in its unassuming character, may in some measure be service- able, to prepare the way, in some degree, for the enlighten- ing of Africa, which is its grand object : and I therefore recommend it to all those who take a friendly interest in that continent.
