 PREFACE. 
 
 1\/TY only excuse for using the Chief Commissioner's per- 
 mission to print this very brief Vocabulary is that the 
 Aka language is practically unknown, and that even this very 
 imperfect list of words may encourage and assist some more 
 competent enquirer to investigate a language full of interest. 
 Even this short list will suffice to show that the language has 
 little affinity with that of the Miris and Dafflas, the neigh- 
 bours of the Akas on the east. Some day, perhaps, its con- 
 nection with Tibetan — a. connection which the physical aspect 
 and dress of the Akas renders probable — may be worked out. 
 If any one will undertake the task, I can recommend Japho, 
 who lives near Balipara, as an instructor who talks Assamese 
 fairly well, and is willing to bear with an ignorant foreigner's 
 enquiries, — for a consideration. My only regret is that other 
 occupations made me but a poor pupil, as this Vocabulary too 
 plainly shows. Brief as my list of words is, it probably 
 contains many errors. Nothing is more difficult than to hear 
 the words of a language aright unless the enquirer has 
 learned enough to speak connected sentences, and it is too 
 likely that many of these words have not been transliterated 
 correctly. They were, however, all repeated to Japho ; and if 
 errors there are, upon his head may they be visited. 
 
 I much regret that I had to leave Assam with the 
 task of learning the Aka tongue barely begun ; and I

 earnestly hope that some one will take it up where I left it 
 off. In many ways Aka is the most interesting of Assamese 
 hill tongues. It is the least known perhaps of any, and it is 
 the speech of a race whose habits and customs will well repay 
 enquiry.
