PREFACE.

A BOOK of reference should not require much preface or
explanation, but a few words of introduction may be per-
mitted, in which to lay before the reader the scope of the work
 and its arrangement.

In the Bibliography of Matthew Arnold especial interest
attaches to the Poetical Works. In the successive editions of
 the collected volumes the changes made are very confusing ;
some poems are omitted, new ones are introduced, and the titles
of others are altered. Poems omitted from several editions
reappear in later volumes, while some are reprinted only in
fragments. In the first section of the Bibliography —
treating of the poetical writings — all these differences are
noted ; and, at the end of the book, a Synoptical Index is given,
by which the course of any one Poem through the successive
editions may be traced, or the contents of the different volumes
 compared.

When preparing his Poems for a new edition, Mr. Arnold
frequently took the opportunity of revising the text ; these
emendations form an interesting study, but it has not been
deemed advisable to take any note of them here.

The Second Division of the Bibliography is taken up by the
Prose Writings. The principal feature of this part is the list
of Contributions to Periodical Publications. The compilation of
this list has necessitated a search through many series of
magazines ranging over a long period. It will be seen from it
that the Text of the majority of the Prose Works had previously
appeared as magazine articles. The more important of the
alterations made in the reprints of the prose writings are alluded
 to in this division.

vi Preface.

The Criticisms and Reviews of Matthew Arnold's writings
are arranged in the third part of the Bibhography. There
are over Three hundred items in this division, selected mainly
from the leading periodicals of the last forty years.

It has been found convenient to include with the magazine
and press articles the few books which are devoted, either
entirely or in part, to the consideration of Matthew Arnold's
writings. The arrangement of this division, as of the other parts
of the Bibliography, is, on the whole, chronological. This
arrangement permits most of the Reviews treating of the same
subject to be recorded in proximity.

In the Addenda are recorded a few items of interest,
notably the discovery of a second copy of Alaric at Rojue.

The Table of Contents serves the purpose of an Index^ and
from it the general scheme of the book may be seen.

In preparing this Bibliography the Compiler has personally
inspected every book, magazine, or newspaper described, with
the exception of three or four editions of minor importance.
In this he has been much helped by possessing an almost
complete collection of Matthew Arnold's Works. The British
Museum and the Guildhall Library have been extensively used
for reference to Periodicals, Parliamentary Reports, &c. The
Compiler is also indebted to the publishers of Mr. Arnold's
books, and to others, for much valuable information.

Every care has been taken to make the Bibliography accurate
and, as far as possible, complete. The Compiler will be glad
to receive notice of any omission or correction.
