This disappointment is undoubtedly due to : 1. Defective material for study and poor methods of teaching ; 2. Too much testing and too little teaching ; 3. Finding errors rather than preventing them ; 4. The use of a theoretical, rather than the practical, vocabulary of children and adults. The teaching of spelling must be done from a spelling book in the hands of the children, since the individual teacher does not have the time to prepare lists of words which will produce as good results as the lists given in a spelling book, the selection and preparation of which are the result of years of special observation and testing. A plan of teaching spelling to secure the best results should consist of a thoughtful, systematic, and comprehensive pres- entation of the words and spelling facts which every pupil must learn. It must contain an adequate and simple system of phonics for the primaiy grades, since a large per- iii contap:o of the worils in common use are piir(>ly plionotic and present no sj)('llin<:; dif!i('uUies once a sane and practical plioiietic foundation is fixed. It must have a vocal)ulary selected and paded with such care that it will t:;ive the child the ability to spell correctly those words whicli he neeils to use in his written work, antl that it will also dev(>lop and broaden his vocabiJaiy for his future needs. It should contain suitable directions and hints to the teacher, suffi- ciently removed from the pupil's text so that he may not be confused In' tlieiii. It may, and in many grades should, contain irjformation and suggestions to the puj)il that will liclp him to master the many peculiarly non-phonetic words which present their indivitlual prol)lems and must l)e in- dividually mastered. IL sliould contain a very few of the most important spelling rules simply stated. It should contain a large variety of sentences for dictation, which may wi.^^ely take the form of gems of thought. Such a plan, well taught, constantly supplemented by the teacher with such words as the ))eculiar (hfHculties of individual |)U|)ils and (•la.'^.-;es may n'(|uire, will jjroduce a maximum of ability to spell correctly. In the Aldine Sjxller the authors have presented a |)lan of teaching which in actual results has proved singularly effective. The vocabulary has been selected and graded with unusual care to meet the actual needs of life and to develoj) a spelling sense. In its prej)aration a careful com- iv parison was made of the vocabularies of several of the most popular spelling books of the day in respect to both grada- tion and selection. Paralleling this, the various recent tests and investigations, notably those of Ayres, Jones, and Cook and O'Shea, have been checked. The resulting vocabu- lary is thought to represent the real writing vocabulary of the average child of the grade in which it is taught. Special and repeated drills are given on the real trouble makers — the one hundred and more words that comprise four-fifths of the misspelled words of the schoolroom. In the primary grades use is made of exceptionally valu- able phonetic lists. Emphasis is placed upon this important and very practical foundation for the development of a spelling sense, and its mastery in the primary grades will do much to train children to spell correctly. A few compara- tively uncommon words are used in these lists chiefly for the value of the phonetic drill. As every error creates a tendency, and if repeated quickly establishes a habit, it is important that the correct spelling of words be taught before children have occasion to write them. Every worth-while test and investigation shows the most common and most useful words in our language to be the words used early by children. It is likewise certain that very many of the misspelled words are one-s}'llable words in very common use. It would, therefore, seem essential that the real teaching of spelling should be done as early as pos- sible in the grades — somewhat earher than has frequently been the ea.'^e — that correct habits, rather than incorrect ones, may be formed. Obhgation is expressed to Dr. Leonard P. Ayres of the Russell Sage Foundation for kind ])ermission to make use of his list of "The Thousand Connnonest Words." These and some four thtjusand other veiy common and important wortls constitute the Aldine vocahulaiy. That the Aldine Speller may lead to some real teaching, and decrease "lesson hearing," is the hope of the authoi'S. VI DIRECTIONS TO TEACHERS Oral Spelling Oral spelling should always precede written spelling in the primary grades. Careful and distinct pronunciation by the child should always precede oral spelling. Children cannot be expected to spell correctly words that they cannot pronounce. It is well to emphasize the form of a word of more than one syllable by syllabication. It makes the spelling more obvious, promotes clear enunciation, and assists in creating a correct mental picture of the word. The sight words in this book are so syllabicated when firet presented. A slight pause between the syllables is usually sufficient in oral spelling. In writing the words they should not be divided. Testing The mere "hearing" of spelling lessons is happily a thing of the past in most schools. However, teachere cannot be too strongly impressed with the worthlessness of such exercises. The primary object is to instruct, not to examine — to teach to spell correctly, not to find out how many vii words may be spelled iiieorrcctly. Review lessons should Ix^ pven frequently, anti these are sufficient for test })uiposes. All other lessons shouhl l)e thoroughly taught with instruc- tion the aiin and object of the lesson. Interest It hius been well said that "interest is nine-tenths of education." This is true in teaching spelling. Any means which will arouse interest in mastering words is likely to be effective. So far as our forefathei's succeeded in securing results in this sul)ject they did so by iiitoi-est in the old- fashioned ** spelling-bee." Spelling matches of various sorts are desiral)le for creating interest. The review lists and 8jx»cial lists will ])e found admiral )le for this purpose. It should be remembered, however, that this is testing what is already learned and is not teaching something new. Pi'PiLs' Lists Each puj)il has his own difriculties in spelling. Teach him to make private li.sts of the words wliich he finds espe- cially hard to sjx'll and have him use extra ("fTort lo contjuer these troultle-makei-s. These may be listed in the l)ack of liis te.vtbook or in his individual note book. Occasional lessons may l)e devoted entirely to this kind of exercise and they .should be individual and painstaking. Such words shouhl be watchecl for in the oilier written work and mis- viii spelling prevented rather than corrected. Besides making the misspelled words the basis of a lesson they may well be correctly and carefully written on the board with the diffi- culty shown in colored crayon. If possible leave them in sight for several days. Homophones Words spelled differently but pronounced alike should be kept apart until the spelling of each has become fixed and the ability to use correctly in sentences reasonably sure. Then only may they safely be brought together for comparison. When this is done much care must be used that no confusion may exist in the child's mind as to the proper use of each. Order of Presentation All children do not learn speUing equally well in the same way. Some are sense organ learners while others are largely motor organ learners. Most children are both. In all cases the order of seeing words, hearing them pronounced, pronouncing them, spelling them aloud, and then writing them, will be found to be most effective. Appeal is thus made successively to the eye, the ear, the memor}^, and the hand. Enunciation Poor enunciation is a common source of incorrect spoiling. Occasionally tost your })upils on sounding v.ords. See to it that they learn to give the right value to the vowel ix Bounds and do not omit any that should bo sounded. Correcting Errors Too strong a plea cannot be niatle for the abandonment of a practice, still common, of recjuiring children to rewrite niisspellecl words twenty-five, fifty, or one hundred times. As a means of punishing chil(h-en it is bad. As a corrective measure this mechanical, thoughtless copying does more harm than good. Good corrective work calls for indivichial teacliing. Tlie teacher must asceilain fii-st why the word is mi.s^pelled. 11iis may be due to misjironunciation, to imj)erfect vi.sualization, to a misundei'standing of the word and its meaning, or, too often, to mere carelessness in writing. Wlien the teacher knows why the error is made, the way to correct it should l)e clear. Proper Names No place has l)een given in this hook to jiroper names, since the needs of (hlTerent chissrooms vaiy so widely. I'hey nuLst l)e thoroughly taught, however, and it is the teacher's duty to teach such proi)er names as her pui)ils need to use. Strongly emphasize the fact that tiicsc pi()|)er names always iK'gin with a capital letter. Gcograi)hical and historical names should be taught in connection with those subjects. If non-phonetic or pecuHar in spelHng, call attention to the peculiarity. For example, pupils frequently have troul^le with Britain. The spelling of this word must be learned when the geography of the British Isles is first studied — grades five or six. If attention is called to the ai, and to the fact that, if spelled ia, it would have three syllables, and that in common with w^ords derived from it, there is but one t; — in other words, if real teaching is done at the right time, the percentage of misspellings will be very small. Using the Stories Read the stories, "The Two Scouts," "The Two Boys," and "The Efficient Guide" with the pupils. See that they understand the meaning and the object of telling these stories. Keep them before the pupils by the constant application of them to their own efforts. Records of the work of the scouts and those who qualify as guides may be kept. Let them see just how important it is in this and all other work to be able to "light their fire with one match." Careful Teaching In teaching ever}^ lesson, do your part by pronouncing each word clearly and correctly; l)y reciuiring the chilchen to do the same ; by training them to see the word, and accu- xi ratf'ly to notice silent lettei-s and unusual coniliinations ; and by showing them how to apply the niles given in their books. Remember that a lial)it of misspelling is veiy easily formed and, once establishetl, is most diflieult to overcome. In fact, if it extends over a period of three or four years such a habit is st^ldom com])letely corrected. Teachei-s in gratles above you have a light to expect that your work has been done well. Use .vnd Meaning Hcmember, it is not enough that children pronounce and spell words correctly. They should know the meaning and how to u.se each word. Many of the words are gr()U])ed in their natural connec- tion — school words, letter words, business and trade words, journey words, etc \ few suggestions showing how these grouj) words may be used are given in (he book. Oral work should always |)recede the written woik. See Lesson SO, Sixth Vrar, for illustration. See that the children's sen- tences are well e\|)ressed before allowing any writing. IN-rhaps it will not lie necessary to write at all. It is ucci'stiiuy that eveiy child should know how to use and spell th»* words correctlv. 2. When a word is taught, one ur inuiv of its conunon xii derivatives are given, — a saving in time in studying the spelling lesson, and an added clearness to meaning. For illustrations see Lessons 39 and 42. 3. Well-selected ciuotations from the best sources are given, showing the words used correctly. Man}' of these quotations should be memorized ; some should be dictated ; some are to be reproduced ; some are to be copied, sub- stituting other words in place of underlined words ; all are to be read intelligently, that the pupils maj' learn the true meaning of the words by meeting them in their right context. Spelling Demons On pages 11 and 12 is a remarkable list of words fre- quently misspelled. They are given here l)y permission of the compiler, Dr. W. F. Jones of the University of South Dakota. He has aptly named them the "One Hundred Spelling Demons of the English Language." As the result of a most exhaustive and careful investigation he finds them not only to be the most commonly misspelled words, but to be misspelled frequently and persistently in all grades. These words have been taught and frequently reviewed. Call the children's attention over and over again to the difficulties in them. Use some of them daily. Hold the children to the correct spelling of them in all written work. Make opportunities to use them. Keep a record in plain xiii sight, showing the c-hil(h-en's progress in conquering them. Make the master}' of these words a matter pei-sonal to yourself, even to the extent of considering your teaching a failure if ever}- child in the fifth year does not form the habit of correctly spelling this list. Call attention to these pages at the l)eginning of the year, and arouse the children's interest and amljition to master the words as early as possible. On page 49 is given another list of lesser ''demons." The sixth-grade teacher should in like manner hold hei-self responsible for this list. Keep on urging and testing untU each child ha.s mastered his j)ailicular "word demons." Review Lists On pages 27-2S and ().")-(')() are lists of words for review. These arc selected from "The One Thousand Commonest \V(jrds" as found by l)i-. Ayres, and are here used by per- mission. Without special study, at least sev(Mity-tiine per cent of those given on ]iages 27 2S wow sjx'llcd correctly by the fifth-grade children in (Mghty-four cities in the United States, and at least seventy-nine per cent of those given on pages ()'>-r»() were spelled correctly by (h(> sixth-grade chil- dren in the same schools. Careful teaching should give a much higher percentage. XIV Troublesome Endings On page 7 of Part Four are many words with similar endings. These need careful teaching. For example, after thoroughly studying Lessons 39-50 a review should Ije given by dictating first a word ending in or, then one in ar, and then one in er. In this way test the ability to associate the correct ending with each word. Pages 48 to 54 of Part Four should be re\'iewed and tested in the same way. These similar terminations are one of the greatest difficulties we have to overcome. Much review and much use of the words in sentences are absolutely needed for their mastery. Synonyms ^In teaching synonyms show that while a synonym means nearly the same thing as another word, it does not usually mean just the same. Lead the pupils to select such synonyms as have the nearest shade of meaning, and point out the difference. This work may be made most valualjle, in extending and broadening the vocabulaiy, and in gaining ability to discriminate in the use of words. In many lessons like those on page 14, sentences may be required using the synonyms, and showing the variations in their meaning. Antonyms may be taught in the same way with most de- sirable results. Again, hsts of suitable words may be ])repared, and attention direete^l to the changes in mcannig caused by the use of ditYerent prefixes. Sl'FFTXF.S The three important rules j)r('S('nte(l have l)een ajijilied in previous grades l)u( not memorized. In this gratle they should be memorized and the most important exceptions noteil, discussed, and memorized. These lules apply to such a large number of words that their masteiy and ap})lication are very important. Dktioxahy Lessons The "dictionaiy habit" is a most a(hiiiral)le one. Those cliildren are fortunate who have instant access to a diction- aiy when they iu-gin this book. Those will get most value from its u.se who have been taught how. Do not deaden the interest by re(|uiring pupils to look up cvciy word in cvor>- lesson, but rather have thein look up all words whose meaning, spelling, or iironunciation is unccitaiii. Many ver>' profitablr lessons may be given in Inrming i)hn-als, xvi adding prefixes and suffixes, selecting derivatives, and find- ing synonyms other than those given in this book. Special Lists — Part Four Some very vakial)le material is given on pages 66-75. These pages are to be taught at the discretion of the teacher. Pages 74 and 75, gi\'ing abbreviations, may well be taught at the beginning of the seventh year. Two of three lessons will prol)ably be found to be sufficient. In the list of words with more than one correct spelling the preferred form is given firet, but the second is frec^uently used and is entirelv correct. It is not intended that l)oth shall be taught, but it is well for both teacher and pupil to know that either is correct. Many foreign words and phrases are in such common use in our language as to make desiral)le a familiarity with their correct spelling and pronunciation. These pages are for reference use and for use with special groups of children. If taught at all, the teacher should be absolutely sure of the correct pronunciation. Pages 67 and 68 contain 97 words frequently mispro- nounced. These mav well be studied earlv in the year so that the pupils may be tested on their pronunciation from time to time. xvii To THE Girls and Roys: The Two Scoitts Once upon a time the general of an army found himself in a serious jwsition. He was shut u]) in a fortified town and his food supply was ver}' low. In order to find out something of the position, strength, and })lans of the enemy, he sent two young soldiei-s out as scouts.
