A/1 &r3 7^ ELLEN WALTERS AVERY. The death of Ellen Walters Avery, youngest (laugh- ter of Samuel P. and Mary Ogden Avery, was to those who were admitted to the intimacy of her friendship, a source of deep and lasting gi'ief . With a disposition singularly modest and retiring, and with little love for social pleasures and triumphs, but enjoying, with all the intensity of an ardent and affectionate nature, the companionship of a few chosen friends, Miss Avery's life was passed serenely in the society of her favorite books, in communion with nature, the pleasures of country life, and in un- selfish devotion of thought and labor for others. Intellectually richly gifted, Miss Avery made good use of her opportunities for prosecuting the studies in which she took so much delight. Few, even of those who knew her well, were aware of their extent or their range. Not only was she familiar with English literature of the last two centuries particularly, but she was well read in the most eminent of the French and German writers, especially in their poetical works ; and was for some year;^ a contributor to the Home Journal, of New York, and other periodicals, of versions from the works of Goethe, Heine, Victor Hugo, de Musset, and others, whose thought and style alike she possessed a singular facility in render- ing; and of original poems, in which her high ideals, and her passionate love of nature, were expressed with a delicate fancy and in melodious rhythmic form. Miss Avery, too, was no less interested in Church history and in hymnology. She had read most of the works of the leading writers upon those sub- jects, was fascinated witli the natural sciences, es- pecially in the study of works on natural history, had ill a good knowledge of the science and history of music and of its composers, also was a devoted attendant at the best musical performances, and was pursuing with ardor the study of the Greek and Latin languages. Of Miss Avery^s original poems, we will quote but one, " Foreboding,^' which was written and published several months before her sudden and unexpected death. Miss Avery was born in Brooklyn, N. Y., January 1, 1861, and died of acute pneumonia, at the home of her parents in New York, March 25, 1893. In a beautiful part of Greenwood she rests beside her brother, Henry Ogden Avery, the lamented archi- tect, who died April 30, 1890. Long and sadly will they be mourned, and lovingly remembered — taken away in their prime, so rich in promise of fulfilment, and so well equipped as they were by rare gifts of mind and character for a life of beneficent service. FOREBODING. Thou far-off spring, O coming spring, I long for thee thro' wintry hours. How can it be but thou wilt bring My heart her olden share of flowers ? When thou dost call to every tree Its bird that sings in sun or rain. Then to my heart, how can it be But thou wilt give her birds again ? O dark foreboding thought, be still ! Thou shalt not rouse this ghostly fear. How can it be but joy shall fill ,^ My life as erst when spring was here ? O longed-for season, lovely spring ! Shall I no more rejoice with thee ? How can it be but thou wilt bring My old delight again to me ? iv fTJ5lVBR2ITTJ BOOKS COLLECTED BY ELLEN WALTERS AVERY 1 Abbott (E. Aj. Shakeyperian Grammar. Post 8vo, cloth.
