UC-NRLF B 3 TEE 33M ONE HUNDRED ILLUSTRATED BOOKS THE GROLIER CLUB DECEMBER An. Dom. MCMXXI L>-»^ v^'A *« tv-*^ cT ^ ^ \ oc^^v^ <^ A CATALOGUE OF ONE HUNDRED ILLUSTRATED BOOKS I 47 2 - I 8 96 AN EXHIBITION HELD IN NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER I92I NEW YORK THE GROLIER CLUB I92I -^ SCHOOL NOTE AT least since the time of Dr. Dibdin, who seems to have been the first writer on bibliographical subjects to repro- duce old illustrations, there have always been collectors in England and on the Con- tinent of Europe who have sought books for the sake of the pictures they contain. In America, however, ardent and serious as its collectors were and are, few seem to have paid attention to the fine art of illustration and there is no American consensus of opin- ion in regard to it. To a great extent this is due to the fact that there is no general guide to the history or the criticism of book illustration from the beginning to the end of the nineteenth century. There are many bibliographies and accounts of special groups of illustrated books and many essayists have devoted their skill to the appraisement of isolated volumes, but as yet no one has attempted a survey of the field. The exhibition which is here catalogued is therefore to a certain extent a new en- deavor, as it is perhaps the first attempt v m.i260 NOTE in this country to place about the walls of a single gallery one hundred representative books printed between the years 1472 and 1896 which were selected from the available material solely on account of the artistic merit of their illustrations. Others faced by the same problem would undoubtedly make a different selection, and should this list encourage them to try their hands, its print- ing will be more than justified. It is proper to state that as the volumes exhibited were selected not for their rarity or provenance but for the merit of their illus- trations as prints, they do not in all cases belong to the editions in which those illus- trations made their earliest appearance. A reference to the appended bibliography, how ever, will enable any one to obtain full data concerning this matter. VI CATALOGUE The items are listed chronologically by schools under countries. To save the space which would have been required for adequate description, ini- tial citations have been made to certain of the reference books mentioned in the appended bibliography. 1 Boccaccio, de praeclaris mulieribus — Ulm, Zainer, 1473 (H*3329) Cuts — Schr. 3510, M. 95, Bib. iv, p. 438, P.
