Lord is nigh unto all that call upon Him, to all that call upon Him in truth. (Psalm cxlv, 18.) Wherewith shall I come before the Lord and bow myself before the Most High? He hath showed thee, O man, what is good ; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy God. (Micah vi, 8.) Thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabit- eth eternity, whose name is Holy : Though I dwell in the high and holy place, yet am I with him who is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to quicken the heart of the contrite. (Isaiah Ivii, 15.) The strangers that join themselves to the Lord, to serve and to love Him, them will I bring to my holy mountain and make them rejoice in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacri- fices shall be accepted upon mine altar, for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all na- tions. (Isaiah Ivi, 6-7.) Prepare to meet thy God, O Israel. (Amos iv, 12.) The place whereon thou standest is holy ground. (Exodus iii, 5.) As the hart pants after the water brooks, so longeth my soul for Thee, O God. My soul thirst- eth for God, for the living God. Why art thou cast down, O my soul, and why art thou disquieted within me ? Hope thou in God ; for I shall yet praise Him for the help of his countenance. (Psalm xlii, 1-2-5.) O send Thy light and Thy truth ; let them lead me, let them bring me unto Thy holy hill and to Thy tabernacles ; then will I go unto the altar of God, unto the God of my exceeding joy. (Psalm xliii, 3-4. And Abraham said : " Behold now, I who am but dust and ashes have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord." (Genesis xviii, 27 ) Thus saith the Lord : The heaven is my throne and the earth is my footstool ; yet will I look to this man, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and obeyeth my word. (Isaiah Ixvi, 1-2.) Guard thy foot when thou goest to the house of God and be more ready to hear instruction than to give the sacrifice of fools; for they consider not that they do evil. Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thy heart be hasty to utter anything before God ; for God is in heaven and thou art up- on earth : therefore, let thy words be few. (Ecclesiastes iv, 17 v, i.) Service for the Sabbatb. Choir : (Psalm xcii.) It is good to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing praises to Thy name, O most High. To show forth Thy loving kindness in the morning, and Thy faith- fulness every night ; upon stringed instruments and upon the psaltery, upon the harp with solemn sound. For Thou, O Lord, hast made me glad by Thy doings ; in the works of Thy hands I greatly rejoice. How great are Thy works, O Lord, how deep Thy purposes ! The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree> he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Planted in the house of the Lord, they shall blossom in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age, full of sap shall they be and flourishing. To make known that the Lord is upright ; truly, He is my rock ; there is no unrighteousness in Him. Let us come into His presence with thanksgiv- ing, and sing joyfully to Him with psalms. For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised, and beside Him there is no God. In His hand are the depths of the earth ; the strength of the hills is His also. The sea is His, and He made it ; and His hands formed the dry land. O come, let us worship and bow down, let us adore the Lord, our Maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture and the flock of His hand. O sing to the Lord a new song ; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord ; praise His name, show forth His salvation from day to day. 5 Honor and majesty are before Him, strength and beauty are in His sanctuary. Give unto the Lord, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the Lord the glory due to His name. O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness, reverence Him all the inhabitants of the earth. The Lord reigneth, He hath established the world that it shall not be moved. Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad ; let the fields be joyful and all that is therein. He judges the world with righteousness and nations with His truth. They that love the Lord hate evil ; He will pre- serve the souls of His servants. Light is sown for the righteous, and joy for the upright in heart. Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous, and give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness. He hath remembered His mercy and His truth toward the house of Israel ; And all the ends of the earth have seen His sal- vation. Exalt ye the Lord our God, and worship at His footstool. The Lord our God is holy. 6 (Congregation Standing.) Minister: Praise ye the Lord, to whom all praise is due ! Choir and Congregation : Praised be the Lord from this time forth arid forever. (Congregation Sitting.) Minister: pRAISE be unto Thee, O Eternal, Ruler of the world, at whose word the shades of evening fall, and by whose will the gates of morn are opened. Thy wisdom established the changes of times and seasons, and ordered the ways of the stars in their heavenly courses. Creator of day and night, Lord of hosts is Thy name. Thou, ever-living God, wilt rule over us forever. Praise be unto Thee, O God, for the day and its work and for the night and its rest. Infinite as is Thy power, even so is Thy love. Thou didst manifest it unto Israel, Thy servant. By laws and commandments, by statutes and ordi- nances hast Thou led us into the way of righteous- ness and brought us to the light of truth. There- fore, at our lying down and our rising up we meditate on Thy teachings and, at all times, rejoice in Thy laws. In them is true life and length of days. O, that Thy love may never depart from our hearts. Praise be to thee, O God, who hast re- vealed Thy love unto Israel. (Congregation standing.) Thou shalt teach them dili- gently unto thy children, and shalt speak of them when thou sittest in thy house, when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. Bind them as a sign upon thy hand, and let them be as frontlets between thine eyes. Write them upon the doorposts of thy house and upon thy gates. And now that we live in a land of freedom, may we continue to be faithful to Thee and Thy word. May Thy law rule in the hearts of all Thy children, and Thy truth unite them in the bonds of fellowship. Let the righteous of all nations rejoice in Thy grace, and exult in Thy justice. O God, Thou art our refuge and our hope ; we glorify Thy name now as did our fathers in ancient days. Choir : Who is like unto Thee, O God, among the mighty ? May we, sanctified through Thy commandments, become sharers in the bles- sings of Thy word. Teach us to be satisfied with the gifts of Thy goodness and gratefully to rejoice in all Thy mercies. Purify our hearts that we may serve Thee in truth. Congregation. From the rising of the sun, even unto the going down thereof, the name of the Lord is praised. With God are wisdom and strength, His are coun- sel and understanding. The heavens are the Lord's, the earth also and all that is therein. He made the great lights, the sun to rule by day, the moon and the stars to rule by night. He spake and they were made, He gave a law they cannot transgress. He covereth the heavens with clouds and prepar- eth rain for the earth. He causeth grass to grow for cattle, and herbs for the service of man. He bringeth forth food from the earth ; wine also to gladden the heart of man. Man goeth forth unto his work and to his labor until the evening. II God ruleth the pride of the roaring sea ; when the waves thereof rise, He stilleth them ; He saith : Thus far shalt thou come, and here shall thy proud waves be stayed. The everlasting God hath laid the foundations of the world ; He hath placed the corner-stone thereof. The Creator of the ends of the earth fainteth not, neither is He weary ; there is no search- ing of His wisdom. The way of the Lord is perfect, His word is tried, His counsels stand forever. The Lord liveth. Blessed be the God of our" sal- vation. Minister : TTEAVENLY Father, we rejoice that amidst - * the ceaseless cares and anxieties, the vain desires and wearisome struggles of our earthly life, Thy holy Sabbath has been given to us as a day of rest and refreshment of soul. It takes the burden from our shoulders, calls us to the restfulness of Thy house and the joy of Thy worship, and com- forts us by Thy gracious message : peace, peace be to those that are far and to those that are near. We thank Thee for all Thy benefits towards us in the past week ; for the preservation of our lives, of our health and our strength ; for the blessings of home, of love, of friendship, and for all other good influences which support us in the hour of 12 trial and temptation. Thou sendest us the joys that brighten our days ; from Thy hand, also, come the sorrows that cast their shadows over them. In all our experiences we recognize Thy guidance and praise Thy wisdom. O, may this Sabbath bring rest to every disquieted heart and be as a healing balm to every bruised soul. Thou who hearest prayer, we beseech Thee to endow us with the grace of a contented disposi- tion ; and when we pray for new blessings may we ask of Thee in the spirit of humility and submis- sion, remembering that we cannot know if what we ask is really for our good ; that Thou alone knowest the future and orderest all things well, whether Thou grantest our petitions or deniest them. When we sing Thy praise, may our souls rise with our songs to Thee, and when we render Thee our homage may we consider that it is only by obedience to Thy commandments, by faithful- ness to our duties, by the goodness of our actions that we can make our worship acceptable to Thee. Look with compassion upon Thy children and grant us that strength of love and purity of pur- pose that shall enable us to live together in unity, and work together in peace and concord, so that the well-being of all may be promoted, and Thy name, O God, glorified in all the earth. Yet hast Thou made him but little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honor. Every day we receive of the fulness of Thy bounty; by Thy protection we have passed safely through 15 the dangers that beset our paths. If we were tried by sorrow and days of anguish were allotted to us, it was not that Thou hadst forsaken us. Thine eye is ever upon us and Thine arm still guides us. In Thine own time, O God, we shall surely say with the ancient seer : I thank Thee, that Thou hast tried me ; for now that Thy visitation is past, Thou comfortest me, and I draw waters of joy from the wells of salvation. We pray for all people who at this hour are in tribulation, in sickness, in want, in danger of body or soul. We name in our hearts those that are nearest to us, and in whose afflictions we are af- flicted. Let them see Thy help ; and grant them a blessed release from their trials. May we do what in us lies to lead into the right way the erring and the wayward. May we see in their sins rather the frailty of our common nature than guilt of will ; and reach out our hand to the fallen brother. Enlighten our minds that we put to its highest use every gift of Thy hand ; that we cherish a good conscience above worldly gains, and a healthy soul above sensual gratification. May we be enabled, by Thy grace, so to order our whole life, that at its eventide we shall look back with a tranquil mind upon the world we leave, and find in the world we enter that perfect rest which Thou hast prepared for the righteous among the children of men. Better is the little gotten in the fear of God, than great treasure and trouble therewith. 17 My son, keep the commandment of thy father, and forsake not the teaching of thy mother. For the commandment is a lamp and the law is a light, to guide thee in the way of life. I will walk within my house, in the integrity of my heart. I will set no wicked thing before me, it shall not cleave to me. Fret not thyself because of evil-doers to do evil likewise ; cease from anger and forsake wrath. Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright one ; for there is a future for the man of peace. Softer than the twilight cairn is that peace that comes to us here with healing on its wings. Like the dew of Mount Hermon falling upon the hills of Zion, it instills new vigor into the tired frame ; and the soul, weary from life's stern combats, is refreshed out of the abundance of God's grace. It is at this hour, O God, that Thy messenger of peace de- scends from on high to turn the hearts of the par- ents to the children, and the hearts of the children to the parents, strengthening the bonds of devotion in the household, and making it a temple worthy of Thy presence. 19 We thank Thee, O God, for the sanctity of this day, which ever fostered moderation, purity and fidelity in the souls of Israel. The Sabbath light shone into the life of our fathers as a beacon across a storm-tossed sea ; it sent its comforting rays into Judah's tents when they were wrapped in the dark- ness of persecution, and the iron had entered the souls of the martyred race. Let the day not be less welcome to us, now, that our lot has fallen in brighter times and pleasanter places. Children of happier lands may we never- theless prize and preserve Israel's heritage that it bring comfort and joy to us and to future genera- tions. May the Sabbath cup be to us a cup of sal- vation, which we lift up calling upon the name of the Lord. T T was on the fifteenth day of the month of Kislev, * when King Antiochus of Syria had set up an idol upon the altar of God, and had incense burnt in its honor. And he gave order that the people of Judea should forsake their Law and the covenant and profane the Sabbath and pollute the sanctuary. And many chose rather to die than to forsake the holy covenant. And the king's officers came to the city of Modin, and they said to Mattathias, the son of John, the son of Simon the Hasmonean, a priest of the sons of Joarib who dwelt in Modin : "Thou art a ruler in the city. Go, then, and fulfill the king's command and sacrifice as all the heathens have done, and as also the men of Judea and Jerus- alem did. So shalt thou be of the number of the king's friends." But Mattathias answered and spake with a loud voice : "Though all the nations that are under the king's command obey him and fall away every one from the religion of their fath- ers, yet will I and my sons and my brethren walk in the covenant of our fathers. God forbid that we should forsake the Law to depart from our faith, either to the right or to the left." And when one of the Jews came in the sight of all to sacrifice to the idol, Mattathias was inflamed with zeal, neither could he forbear to show his anger, and he slew him, and also the king's commissioner, and the al- 26 tar he pulled down. And Mattathias cried through- out the city with a loud voice saying : "Whosoever is zealous of the Law and maintaineth the covenant let him follow me." So he and his sons fled into the mountains, and they went about pulling down the heathen altars, and they recovered the Law out of the hand of the Gentiles. Now Mattathias was greatly advanced in age ; he had passed his hundredth year, and his dying hour drew near. He said to his sons : "Be ye zealous for the Law and give your lives for the covenant of your fathers. Remember what our fathers did in times gone by. Was not Abraham found faithful in temptation, and it was accounted to him for righteousness ? Phineas, our father, obtained for his zeal the covenant of an everlasting priesthood. Ananias, Azarias and Mishael were by their faith saved out of the flame, and Daniel from the mouth of lions. Throughout all the ages none that put their trust in God were overcome. Therefore be strong, my sons, and show yourself men in behalf of the Law ; for by it shall ye obtain glory." So he blessed them and was gathered to his fathers. Then Judas, called Maccabee, rose up in his stead, and all his brethren aided him, and they fought courageously the battle of Israel. He put on a breast-plate as a giant, and girt his warlike armor about him. He battled like a lion, and the wicked shrunk for fear of him. He cheered Jacob by his mighty acts, and his memorial is blessed 27 orever. And wh en all the people feared and trembled at the sight of the great multitude of the enemy's hosts, and said : " How shall we be able, being so few, to fight against so many people and so strong?" Judas answered: "With the God of heaven it is all one to deliver us with a large num- ber, or with a small one. Let all the nations know that there is One who will forever save and protect Israel." And Judas led them into battle, and be- hold, the hosts of the enemy were vanquished and they fled. And Israel had a great deliverance. And they sang songs of thanksgiving, and praised the Lord of heaven for His goodness, because His mercy endureth forever. And on the five and twentieth day of Kislev, the same day when three years before the altar of God had been profaned by the heathen, the sanctuary of God was dedicated anew with songs and music, and the people praised the God of heaven who had given them great victory, and they celebrated the Dedication of the Altar for eight days, and there was great rejoicing among the people. Moreover, Judas and his brethren with the whole congrega- tion of Israel ordained that the days of the Dedica- tion of the Altar should be celebrated from year to year for eight days in gladness and thanksgiving. 28 Choir: Kindle the taper, like the steadfast star Ablaze on evening's forehead o'er the earth, Send through the night its luster till afar An eightfold splendor shine above thy hearth. Minister : Al TE praise Thee this day, O Lord our God, for * ^ the great mercy Thou didst exercise on be- half of our persecuted forefathers. When they had been brought to the very brink of destruction, and no hope seemed to remain, Thou didst contend for them, judge their cause and avenge their wrongs ; Thou didst make the wickedness of the tyrant re- coil upon his own head whilst the oppressed were restored to their rightful liberty. The voice of triumph and salvation was heard in the tents of the righteous, saying : The right hand of the Lord hath done valiantly ; the right hand of the Lord is ex- alted ; the Lord hath indeed chastened me, but He hath not given me over unto death. Thy tem- ple was purified from idols, and dedicated anew to Thy holy service. Therefore we extol Thee for this great deliverance. Truly, we are Thy servants ; unto Thee we offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving and we invoke Thy name. Thou, O God, hast not changed, neither is the house of Israel consumed. 29 The Blessing over the Lights. Neither want, nor pain, nor scourge, nor dungeon, nor exile, nor flames could make them forsake the covenant of their fathers. Their remembrance shall never fade from the heart of Israel. Choir: Amen. 30 'HANUKKAH-HYMN. (Ancient Melody.) O OCK of Ages, let our song *" Praise Thy saving power ; Thou, amidst the ranging foes, Wast our sheltering tower. Furious they assailed us, But Thine arm availed us. And Thy word Broke their sword When our own strength failed us. Kindling new the holy lamps, Priests approved in suffering, Purified the nation's shrine, Brought to God their offering. And his courts surrounding Hear, in joy abounding, Happy throngs Singing songs With a mighty sounding. Children of the Martyr-race, Whether free or fettered, Wake the echoes of the songs Where ye may be scattered. Yours the message cheering, That the time is nearing Which shall see All men free, Tyrants disappearing. ADORATION. (Congregation standing.) Minister : T ET us adore the ever-living God, and render *^* praise unto Him who spread out the heavens and established the earth, whose glory is revealed in the heavens above and whose greatness is man- ifest throughout the world: He is our God, and there is none else. Choir. We bow our head and bend our knee and mag- nify the King of kings, the Holy One, the Ever- blest. (Congregation sitting.) Minister. TV/TAY the time not be distant, O God, when * Thy name shall be worshiped in all the earth, when unbelief shall disappear and error be no more. We fervently pray that the day may come upon which all men shall invoke Thy name ; when corruption and evil shall give way to purity and goodness ; when superstition shall no longer enslave the minds, nor idolatry blind the eyes ; when all inhabitants of the earth shall perceive that to Thee alone every knee must bend and every tongue give homage. O may all, created in Thine image, recognize that they are brethren, so that they, one in spirit and one in fellowship, may be forever united before Thee. Then shall Thy Kingdom be established on earth, and the word of 32 Thine ancient seer be fulfilled : The Eternal shall rule forever and aye. Congregation : On that day the Eternal shall be One, and His name shall be One. Minister: A LL you who mourn the loss of loved ones, and, ^** at this hour remember the goodness, the hope and the sweet companionship that has passed away with them, give ear to the word of comfort spoken to you in the name of your God. Only the body has died and has been laid in the dust. The spirit lives and will live on forever in the land of undisturbed peace and perfect happiness. But in this life, also, the loved ones continue in the remembrance of those to whom they were pre- cious. Every act of goodness they performed, every true and beautiful word they spoke, is treas- ured up and becomes an incentive to actions by which the living honor the dead. And when you ask in your grief : Whence shall come my help and my comfort ? then, in the strength of faith, answer with the Psalmist : " My help cometh from God," who will not forsake me, nor leave me in my grief. Upon Him I cast my burden, and He will grant me strength according to the days He has apportioned to me. All souls are His, and no power can take them out of His hands. Come, then, and in the midst of sympa- thizing fellow-worshipers, rise, and hallow the name of God. 33 (The mourners standing and speaking with the Minister.) PXTOLLED and hallowed be the name of God throughout the world which He has created, and which He governs according to His righteous will. Just is He in all His ways, and wise are all His decrees. May His kingdom come, and His will be done in all the earth. Congregation : Blessed be the Lord of life and righteous Judge for evermore. Minister : To the departed whom we now remember, may peace and bliss be granted in the world of eternal life. There may they find grace and mercy before the Lord of heaven and earth. May their souls rejoice in that ineffable good which God has laid up for those that fear Him, and may their memory be a blessing unto those that cherish it. Congregation : Amen. Minister : May the Father of peace send peace to all trou- bled souls, and comfort all the bereaved among us. Congregation : Amen. 34 Elfetnate Services* I. INTRODUCTORY. O our yearning souls inspire ; Warm us with Thy heavenly fire, That in sacred hymns of praise We to God our hearts upraise. III. Father everlasting ! From Thy holy throne of grace To Thy children turn Thy face, Bless this day that it may be Emblem of eternity. III. BENEDICTIONS. READER : Bless ye the Lord the ever-blessed ! Cong, and Choir : Blessed be God the ever-blessed^ forever and aye. READER : O, Eternal our God, the Creator of all things, Thou hast called forth the earth out of chaos and peopled it with living beings who wor- ship Thee and glorify Thy name. The wondrous light that in the morning floods through the gates of the east heralds the approach of day, when all nature wakes, and each creature gives praise unto the Creator ; and the eventide brings rest from care and labor, and the unfolding of the majesty of the illimitable expanse. with its myriads of stars. Even thus, at morning and at eventide do we Thy children recognize the strength of Thy eternal word grafted upon creation ; forbidding it to pass the bonds which Thou hast set. Thy wisdom, O Eternal and Infinite One, is known to us in the changes of tides and seasons, in the setting of the stars within their spheres, in the rising of the sun and the setting thereof, in the majestic truth we read in the page of nature, that while the earth re- maineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, 39 and summer and winter, and day and night, shall not cease. And should we, created in Thy image, not recognize the paternal love that guideth with supreme and infallible intelligence? We profess a knowledge of this love which Thou hast expressed in the statutes and commandments which are our guides through life. Therefore, O God our Father, we will ponder Thy law at our lying down and our rising up ; we will rejoice in the knowledge that obedience to Thy statutes gives life and length of days, and daily shall we proclaim the glory and majesty of Thy name. READER : Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God the Lord is one. Cong, and Choir : Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God the Lord is one. READER : And thou shalt love the Lord Thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thy heart. And thou shall teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt speak of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt write them as a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as fiontlets between thine eyes, and thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house and upon thy gates. IV. SABBATH REFLECTIONS AND PRAYER. THE RABBI : Holy Sabbath rest ! Has the All- father given a greater gift to His children ? A crown-decked queen is she, an angel sent from the realms of divine purity. When the day is done, and turmoil has ceased, and the wheels of industry have stopped their noisy revolutions, the weary frame seeks the refreshing couch to gain strength for the coming morning. Then deep sleep falls upon all nature ; and the silence of the night as eloquently as the many tongues of day proclaims the mercy of God. Sacred is the rest of man and beast ; it is the healing balm sent by love divine to exhausted nature. How much more, then, should we recognize the divine character of the Sabbath, when on it we are to cease from all labor ! How beautiful this privilege that we may assemble to hail this Sabbath queen. She teaches us that our Father has not destined us for toil alone. Labor is honorable and dignified, and the son of toil fulfills his mission. Yet we do not live by bread alone, but gain higher and purer life by obeying the be- hests of the Omnipotent, by spreading light and 41 truth amongst the children of men. And to ac- complish this holy task we must purify ourselves. The Sabbath brings rest to the body, purity to the spirit. From week to week the opportunity comes to us to be more than laborers for bread. Our- selves seekers after truth, humbly following the light that proceeds from the eternal fountain, the Sabbath brings us the requisite vigor to scatter the seeds of salvation and righteousness amongst our fellow men. Then let us adore God for His goodness. He alone gives rest to the weary. He puts love-freighted sleep upon the eyelids, and re- calls us day by day to noble labor and honorable endeavor. He guides our footsteps with wise coun- sel. He saves us for the sake of His name, and shields us from all unhappiness ; from the enemy who oppresses, from the pestilence that brings death, from the sword that smites, from famine and from sorrow ; and He shelters us forever be- neath His never-failing mercy. CHOIR: He is our God, and there is none beside Him. RABBI : " And the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, and observe it, throughout their generation, as an everlasting covenant." May the Holy Sabbath bring us a pure heart, and renew 42 a proper spirit within us. May the children of God, the flock of His pasture passing beneath His hand, give thanks from Sabbath to Sabbath unto the ever active, ever beneficent Father who shall lead His children unto the last generation, and whose providence shall endure unto eternity. And we pray that we may in our day behold the glorious witness of His power which shall banish all impurity from the earth and shall cause all idol- atry to be destroyed. Then, O Heavenly Father, shall all the children of men turn unto Thee, and the world shall be full of Thy knowledge as the waters cover the sea. Then shall all men know the good tidings that Thy kingdom is established upon earth and Thou alone shalt be King and Thy children shall proclaim with one consent : The Lord shall reign forever and ever. And it is also written : And the Lord shall be King over all the earth ; on that day the Lord alone shall be ac- knowledged and His name shall be one. CHOIR : Let all creation gladsome tidings ring, The Lord alone forever shall be King. 43 V. THE MOURNERS' SERVICE. All ye who mourn a recent loss, and ye who com- memorate the departure of your dear ones, be com- forted and consoled. Man born of woman is short of days and full of trouble. He cometh forth as a flower and is cut down. He fleeth also as a shadow and remaineth not. God alone determines our days and fixes the number of our months. God has given and God has taken away, let His name be blessed. Recall your beloved dead with affection. Let their memory be an inspiration to you. Remember their good deeds, and seek to emulate them. Even though they have passed through the valley of the shadow of death, yet are they not dead but abiding forever with God the eternal. Let not your spirits droop nor your heart be anxious, for God is good and merciful. After the midnight of your sorrow will come the morning of your consolation. God alone can change your tears to rejoicing. Whilst you tread the path of life know ye not that it leads unto death ? God has wisely ordained that the eternal spirit of man shall rejoin its Maker and when life's journey is over He giveth His beloved rest. Be comforted then and let your hearts not murmur against God but in pious submission to His holy will and in loving hope of life everlasting 44 rise ye and with me glorify the name of the most high God.
