PREFACE. 
 
 Inasmuch as the STATE MINERAL CABINET is intended, in the 
 main, for popular exhibition, the Trustees, after consultation 
 with the State Mineralogist, Hon. William Irelan, Jr., and 
 others, Trustees of the State Mining Bureau, have decided to 
 arrange its contents on a system easily understood by those 
 unversed in mineralogical science, and which is simple and 
 easy for popular reference. 
 
 The minerals and ores in which the various metals, as GOLD, 
 SILVER, COPPER, TIN, etc., are found, and from which they are 
 extracted, have been grouped together under the head of their 
 respective bases or METALS. 
 
 The SILICATES, crystalline forms of quartz, and other minerals 
 of like general nature, have been grouped together, but arranged 
 in several smaller natural sub-groups. 
 
 Minerals containing LIME (calcium), MAGNESIA, BARYTA, 
 STRONTIUM, SODIUM, POTASSIUM, etc., are grouped under their 
 several natural and evident subdivisions. 
 
 FOSSILS, ROCKS, and GEOLOGICAL specimens, together with those 
 having special industrial interest, as CLAYS, OCHRES, ALKALINE 
 DEPOSITS, and the like, are arranged together, without any 
 attempt at systematic grouping; which, on account of the paucity 
 and incompleteness of material, has been found impracticable. 
 
 It gives the Trustees pleasure to acknowledge valuable assist- 
 ance, rendered by Hon. William Irelan, Jr. (State Mineralogist), 
 and his assistant, Dr. Schneider, of the Mining Bureau, in iden- 
 tifying and naming the specimens.

CHAPTER LX. 
 
 An Act to provide for the removal of the mineral cabinet from the 
 
 State Library. 
 
 [Approved March 9, 1887.] 
 
 The People of the State of California, represented in Senate and 
 Assembly, do enact as follows : 
 
 SECTION 1. Within thirty days after the passage of this Act 
 the Governor shall appoint a Board of Trustees, consisting of 
 three persons, which shall be known as the Trustees of the 
 Mineral Cabinet. 
 
 SEC. 2. It shall be the duty of said Board of Trustees, within 
 thirty days after their appointment, to select a place in the 
 Crocker Art Gallery building, where the said cabinet shall be 
 located, and to remove the same there. The location shall be 
 made with a view to the safety of said cabinet from destruction, 
 and to keeping the same open for inspection by the public; but 
 no expense to the State shall be incurred either for room rent or 
 care of the same. 
 
 SEC. 3. This Act shall take effect from and after its passage.

 In addition to these numbered specimens, there are several fos- 
 sils (seventy-five boxes or trays, some containing one and others 
 three and four specimens), principally Ammonites , some Belem- 
 nites, Trilobite, etc. Some of these are labeled from establish- 
 ment of Dr. Kranz in Bonn; others have slips attached with 
 names in pencil, while some are without labels. It has not been 
 thought advisable, in the absence of a skilled paleontologist, to 
 interfere with these. They have therefore been placed together, 
 with or without names, for future revision. 
 
 There are also, in addition to these numbered and named speci- 
 mens, many more, both of rocks and ores, which are stored in 
 drawers and may be available for exchanges. In addition to 
 these, there are many trays of rock-specimens, accompanied by 
 the surveyor's (or geologist's) note on a tag, showing the locality. 
 It is presumable, from a cursory examination of a few of these, 
 that they are from cuttings, etc., along the line of Central Pacific 
 Railroad. They have been relegated to drawers, as not possessing 
 any interest to the general sight-seeing public.
