Nance, Chairman, Committee on Health, Chicago City Council: Dear Sir — At the meeting of the Committee on Health of the Chicago City Council, held October 26, 1916, the Municipal Reference Library was instructed by your committee to compile comparative statistics showing the retail prices prevailing'on the chief articles of food in the principal cities of the United States. We desire to submit herewith tables showing the retail prices of twenty principal articles of food as of November 1, 1916, in twenty-four cities of the United States. The retail prices prevailing on the various articles of food in the cities listed in the table were collected by municipal reference libraries and departments of weights and measures in the twenty-four cities enumerated. The retail prices given are those prevail- ing, to a large extent, in neighborhood stores or such stores as most nearly represent the trade of workingmen's families. It should be noted that some of the prices contained in the table vary in respect to quality and market conditions. Twelve cities failed to send complete price quotations on each of the twenty articles of food; eight of the twelve cities sending quotations on nineteen articles of.
