The Gamma Chapter, at the annual meeting in 1903, voted to have the Secretary prepare a Catalogue. The Treasurer thought sixty dollars could be appro- priated from the treasury. This pays for a catalogue of names and addresses, one line for each man. A few generous members have responded to the call for enough to make a memorabilia catalogue. The result is not all that the Secretary hoped to make it, but it is all that can be purchased with the money received. Keys. In purchasing key^ we have had very satisfactory dealing with Roehm & Son, Detroit, Mich. Their work is excellent and their prices reasonable. We can cordially recommend them. The Beta of California Chapter was established by charter graiited by the National Council of the United Chapters. September 7, 1004, to the following resident members of Phi Beta Kappa at Leland Stanford University: Raymond Macdonald Alden, Pennsylvania; Henry Lewin Cannon, Western Reserve; William Alpha Cooper, Marietta; Melvin Cilbert Dodge, Hamilton; Clyde Augustus Duniway, Cornell; Orrin Leslie Elliott, Cornell; Henry Ru^hto.i Faircloiigh, Johns Hopkins; Vernon Lyman Kellogg, Kansas; John Ernst Matzke, Johns Hopkins; Henry Winchester Rolfe, Amherst; Samuel Swayze Seward, Jr., Columbia. Organization was effected November I, 1904, by the adoption of a constitution and by-laws, and the election of officers. The first elections to membership were made at an adjourned meeting held November 2\, 1004, covering the lirst four classes in the University and the first group of the class of 1905. Elections from the classes from 1896 to 1904 inclusive, of the second group of the class of 190s, and of other groups provided for in the by-laws, were held April 10, 190s. The by-laws of the chapter provide for three regular meetings of the chapter each year besides the two meetings of the Electorate. Two of these meetings are initiation meetings, in the nature of social gatherings. The annual meeting in May at Com- mencement time will undertake to present an oration and poem in accordance with the traditions of Phi Beta Kappa. The first annual meeting May 22, 190^, will be ad- dressed by Professor Ernest Carroll Moore of the University of California. The by-laws provide for two elections from the senior class; the first in November and the second in April. Not more than one-tenth of the members of the senior class can be elected. Only Faculty members of the chapter are members of the Electorate. Graduate students and graduates of the University who attain distinction in post-gradu • ate studies may also be elected members. There is also provision for the election of honorary members under the conditions laid down in the constitution, but not more than two honorary members may be chosen in any one year. The requirement for undergraduate membership is as follows : " Undergraduates of good moral character, who are candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Arts, and who are distinguished for breadth of culture and excellence in scholarship." Under the provisions of the by-laws, i6q were elected from the classes from 1892 to 1904 inclusive, and twenty-two members from the present senior class. The society has also elected seven members for distinction in post-graduate studies, and one hon- orary member. The officers of the society are as follows : President^Clyde Augustus Duniway. First Vice-President — ^John Ernst Matzke Second Vice-President — Henry Rushton Fairclough. Secretary — Orrin Leslie Elliott. Treasurer — Melvin Gilbert Dodge. Thf Alpha of North Carolina. Chapter No. 57 at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Organized November 7, 1904. The application of the University of North Carolina for a charter of Phi Beta Kappa was sent to the National Council with the approval and recommendation of the following established chapters : William and Mary, Yale, Wesleyan, Vanderbilt, and Princeton. The charter was addressed to Messrs. Eben Alexander, George Howe, Wm. C. Coker, C. Alphonso Smith, and J. M. McBryde, Jr., members of other chapters of Phi Beta Kappa and residing at the University of North Carolina. These gentlemen were instructed to organize and install the new chapter. Accordingly, on Nov. 7, 1904, they called together the Alpha Theta Phi society, the established honor society^ and regularly installed it as the Alpha Chapter of North Carolina of Phi Beta Kappa. The formal installation address was delivered before the society and friends in Gerrard Hall Jan. 28, 190s, by Dr. James W. Bright of the English Department of the Johns Hopkins University, a member of the Gamma of Pennsylvania (Lafayette.) This address purposed showing the value of truly graduate work and the need of a fuller recognition of this value in our own country particularly in the South. The speaker commented on the peculiar appropriateness of organizing here a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa coincidentally with the initiation of a department in the University for truly graduate work. Meinbership in this chapter is granted in accordance with regulations, in substance as follows : Students in the Academic Department of this University who have an average of grade two (equivalent to from 00 to 9^; per cent) on all their work through the Junior year are eligible for election into this chapter ; and a graduate student may be recommended for election, when he receives the degree of Ph. D., by the depart- . ment or departments in which he has done his graduate work. The officers of the society are as follows: President — T. B. Higdon. Secretary—!. C. Wright. Treasurer — T. J. Wilson. Thf. Beta of Colorado. Chapter No. s8 at Colorado College, Colorado Springs. Organized November 11, 1904. A meeting of the charter members, the Phi Beta Kappa men of the faculty, who had formed a provisional organization for the purpose of prosecuting their application for a charter, was held November 1 1, 1904 for the purpose of effecting a chapter or- ganization. The officers of the provisional organization were continued as officers of the chapter, and are as follows : President — Edward S. Parsons. . • Vice-President — Hugh A. Smith. Secretary and Treasurer — Frank H. Loud. In subsequent meetings, members were elected to the chapter from the present graduating class and the alumni of the college, and the chapter also elected to mem- bership Wm. F. Slocum, president of the college, Florian Cajori, Dean of the engineering school, and Edward P. Tenney, a former president of the college. On March 2, 190s, known as Founders' Day, the chapter met, with the members, elect, at the house of Professor Gile. The president. Professor E. S. Parsons, gave an account of the origin of the society in 1776, a summary of its subsequent history, and a narrative of the steps taken to secure a chapter for the college. Professor Gile ex- plained the symbolism of the key. The secretary read the charter, constitution and by-laws of the chapter, and the list of members elect. The president of the chapter, in the name of the charter members, presented a key to the president of the college, Dr. W. F. Slocum, with an appropriate address, to which Dr. Slocum responded. Secretary Frederic L. Paxson, of the Alpha chapter in the State of Colorado, made a short address of congratulation, at the close of which the chapter by vote instructed its secretary to write to the Alpha chapter, expressing gratification at the friendly spirit existing between the two organizations, and reciprocating the good wishes con- veyed to us by its secretary. It was further voted to appoint a committee to arrange. t2 in co-operation with a similar committee of the Alpha chapter, should such be ap- pointed, for a joint banquet of the two chapters. The members present then sub- scribed their names to the constitution and by-laws. In the evening a public meeting of the chapter and guests was held at Perkins Hall when an address was delivered by Professor Rufus B. Richardson of New York, upon " Sicily." The address was illustrated by the lantern, and dwelt mainly upon the archaeology and history of the island to the conclusion of the Greek period. The Eta of Massachusetts. Chapter No. S9 Wellesley College, Wellesley. Organized November 14, 1904. The academic council of Wellesley College voted on January 2S, 1901, that steps be taken to secure a chaptei of Phi Beta Kappa for Wellesley. Accordingly an appli- cation was prepared to be presented to the National Council. This application was signed by the Phi Beta Kappa members of the faculty, associate, professors Edwards and Sherwood, by the retiring president, Mrs. Irvine and by the Phi Beta Kappa mem- bers of the Board of Trustees — Dr. Alexander Mckenzie, Dr William F. Warren, Dr. Horace E. Scudder and Rev. Anson Phelps Stokes, Jr. The application, however, was not perfected in time to be presented to the council of 1901 ; but was submitted in 1904, with the endorsement of the following chapters: Harvard, Yale, Amherst, Cornell, Brown and Williams, and was duly granted. On November 14, 1904, the faculty members of Phi Beta Kappa came together for the first preliminary meeting; Miss Edwards acting as chairman. There were pres- eut: Katharine M. Edwards, Theta of New York; Margaret Sherwood, Mu of New York; Laura E. Lockwood, Alpha of Kansas; Josephine Burnham, Beta of Illinois, and Clarence G. Hamilton, Alpha of Rhode Island. At this and succeeding meetings the by-laws were planned; Miss Caroline Hazard, president of Wellesley College, was in- vited to become an honorary member; and five students from the senior class were chosen to active membership. The installation meeting occurred January 17, I90i>, at 4 p. m. At the private session held in the faculty parlor, Professor E. A. Grosvernor, LL. D., of Amherst College presented the charter to the chapter. The constitution and by-laws were then formarlly adopted, and the choice of new members was ratified. The new mem- bers were introduced and Professor Grosvernor spoke briefly on the aims and customs of the society. After this the chapter adjourned to the chapel for the public exercises, which consisted of: An anthum by the choir, " O Send Out Thy Light," prayer by Dr. Mckenzie, singing of the Phi Beta Kappa hymn, an address bp Professor Grosverner on the history of the Phi Beta Kappa society, a poem entitled "The Illuminators," by President Hazard, singing of the Wellesley Alma Mater by the audience and benedic- tion by Dr. Mckenzie. The officers of the society are as follows: President — Katharine M. Edwards, Ph. D. Vice-President — Margaret P. Sherwood, Ph. D. Secretary — Laura E. Lockwood, Ph. D. Treasurer — Clarence G.
