51 3 i /ICTURESQUE San Antonio, located on a plateau along both banks of the San Antonio River one hundred and fifty miles from the Gulf of Mexico is the county seat of Bexar County and the largest city in Texas, having now a population estimated at nearly 100,000. San Antonio was founded as a Spanish settlement in 1716 by Don Domingo Ramon, and in spite of the many changes and the lapse of time, the modern city still preserves many Spanish characteristics. The original settlement grew rapidly in power and importance and so long as Texas remained a Spanish and Mexican province, San Antonio was the capital for most of the time and always a leading military station. This latter distinction has never been surrendered. It was here that the Franciscan Mission of San Antonio de Valero was established in 1722 and, during the desperate struggle for Texan independence, it was here in the defence of the Alamo yet standing- thai Crockett and his brave companions died to a man like the Spartans at Thermopylae. The modern city of San Antonio is the home of a refined, hospitable and cosmopolitan people. It is a prominent cotton market and the headquarters for a territory where market gardening is carried on in an immense scale all in all a busy metropolis containing over two hundred manufacturing establish- ments, with ample railroad facilities, miles of well-built electric lines, and a park system including over twenty parks and plazas renowned for exquisite beauty, many of which have been preserved intact from the old Spanish time. San Antonio is a joy to the traveler. The quaint and artistic architecture of the city is a relief from the sameness of the ordinary American city. It will ever be a notable spot from its deeply interesting historical associations and it is equally evident by virtue of its superb location that San Antonio is destined to be a commercial metropolis of the first magnitude.
