But man, with privilege, has more Of what belongs to mind. Than reason ever could explore, Or earthly wisdom find. Yet, such will lift their puny arm To strike Omnipotence ; Tho' tott'ring, faint, within the qualm, And feel its virulence. But I should say, the Rights of Man, (Had he alone his due,) Would fix the base contemptuous ban. With privileges few. PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE. ^.5W^HILE youth are in health and vigour of life, '^^^-'"^Whose passions are active and free. The lessons of truth or falsehood are rife. And bend like the soft willow-tree. Necessity lays on their parents' so wise, To see that they're trained aright. While watching the progress of such, in the rise, To tutor and polish them bright. "Saint Paul, and Isaiah," recommended the plan To the church, (in primitive days,) As highly befitting the station of man. To live in the action of praise. Rejoice evermore, we have cause for the same, In honor of Christ who was slain ! Then sing hallelujahs to his blessed name, Rejoice, and repeat it again. In extatic joy, (with emotion of fire,) The spark to a flame shall arise ; When kindled by love, with an ardent desire, To obtain the seat of the wise. The angels in heaven rejoice at the sight. When man is made happy on earth. The reciprocity enhances delight, When he has obtain' d the new birth. In principle to call thee mine, And we be one in name. The truth I state, without a joke Or vague duplicity ; Let's tie the knot (which can't be broke,) In bonds of unity. And such are God's peculiar choice, Elect, and precious store ; Who listen to their Saviour's voice. And all His love adore ! — Mark, they who honor Him the most. Were all this universe of matter, in which we now exist ; bound to lay in one chaotic mass, as in its pristine state ; devoid of spirit, life, or action ; and but one bright spirit peeping through the chink of innate lustre, on all the dark and dismal scenery below, in worse than ruinous decay ; without one soul, or spirit, to animate the bulk, which of itself could not give light, or action ; tho' in the midst of an ethereal space : which some would vainly, and presuming say, is life of all. But tell me whence that judgment came by which vain man decides ? could all or any part of this big bulk of lumber, create one particle of lovely light to shine amid the darkness now prevailing? no never, never, never. But the eye of flame, with arm omnipotent, and wisdom without end ; knowledge superb, and love divine : which, brooding with his spirit, on the same, caused all, at once to live ! whose voice gave echo, and electrified the mass, which into being sprang, with beauty, and magnificence at once ! then order first in matter got a start : and lovely nature, with her charming scenery began ! and man ; most noble creature I then was made, out of this lumber, with soul, and spirit given, to rule all minor things of God's creation. Perhaps it would be well for such, if theirs were nothing else. We grant, man's mortal life is as the wind which passeth off, so brief; but where is the soul, or thinking part of man ? and whither has the spirit fled ? Then, what art thou : but the grand annihilator of the senses. Our aches and pains, our sorrows and our griefs ; no more disturb this mortal frame, when thou appears ! Then, where art thou terrific ? is it in fancy, whim, or imbecility of mind ? which sees the phantom, and construes it to a ghost, a bear, a monster, or a fiend, altho', it never saw a shadow more alarming than its own. And art thou called Death ? Death be thy name ; thou cannot have a better : just opposite to life. And if to me, this life is but a burden : then, why should I repine, or grieve to lay it down ?
