GROLIER CLUB 29 EAST 32D STREET ATALOGUE OF AN EXHIBITION OF WILLIAM FAITHORNE THE EXHIBITION WILL BE OPEN DAILY BETWEEN TEN A. M. AND SIX P. M., FROM THE SIXTEENTH OF FEBRUARY TILL THE FOURTH OF MARCH, INCLUSIVE alifornia 'ional ility NEW YORK 1893 CATALOGUE OF AN EXHIBITION OF PORTRAITS ENGRAVED BY WILLIAM FAITHORNE THE EXHIBITION WILL BE OPEN DAILY BETWEEN TEN A. M. AND SIX P. M., FROM THE SIXTEENTH OF FEBRUARY TILL THE FOURTH OF MARCH, INCLUSIVE NEW YORK 1893 NOTE. WILLIAM FAITHORNE'S engravings possess a deep interest for the student and for the amateur. His portraits of the notabilities of his own time have power, individuality, and character, in addition to a technique which adapts itself with equal readiness to the most varied types rugged and strong in the por- trayal of the figure and features of a Crom- well, or rich, soft, and delicate in reflecting the fair face or the texture of the gown of one of the court beauties of Charles II. 's time. Scarcely less interesting are the examples of his genius as shown in the title-pages and frontispieces, religious, secular, or classical in subject, which he drew for the books of his day. This, the first loan collection ever made of his works in America, is not com- plete, but contains enough early states, many of them very rare, to make plain to the con- noisseur the reasons for the high rank which he holds among engravers, and to permit his art to be studied in all of its varied and brilliant manifestations. 4 NOTE Faithorne, born in London in 1616, first studied his art under William Peake, who had been painter to Charles I. Later he studied under John Payne, painter and en- graver. When the civil war broke out Fai- thorne cast his fortunes with the Royalists, and was made a prisoner by Cromwell's troops. Imprisoned in London, he was allowed to continue the practice of his art as an en- graver, making the portraits of several noble- men, including the Duke of Buckingham. Through the intercession of friends, Fai- thorne was banished to France. He made Paris his home, and under the patronage of the Abb6 de Marolles, the great print col- lector, he studied constantly to improve and perfect his art. About 1650 he returned to London, married, and took a house near Temple Bar, where he engraved plates and sold prints Italian, French, Dutch, etc., as well as his own. This was the period of his greatest activity. During the following thirty years he made a great variety of portraits, frontispieces, etc., retiring from print-selling in 1680 to a house in Printing House Yard, Blackfriars, where he still engraved plates and made a number of crayon portraits which were much admired. Faithorne died in 1691, NOTE 5 in his seventy-fifth year, leaving a remarkable collection of portraits of the eminent men and women of his time. Vertue says : " In his performance few have gone before him, and I may boldly affirm none since have come up to him, he being one of the first Englishmen that did anything to perfection, especially in heads." Nov. 7th, 1666. Called at Faythorn's, to buy some prints for my wife to draw by this winter, and here did I see my Lady Castlemaine's picture, done by him from Lilly's, in red chalk and other colors, by which he hath cut it in copper to be printed. The picture in chalk is the finest thing I ever saw in my life, I think ; and I did desire to buy it ; but he says he must keep it awhile to correct his copperplate by, and, when that is done, he will sell it me. Dec. 1st, 1666. . . . By coach home, in the evening, calling at Faythorne's, buying three of my Lady Castle- maine's heads, printed this day, which indeed is, as to the head, I think, a very fine picture, and like her. Jan. pth, 1667. . . . Thence to Faythorne, and bought a head or two ; one of them my Lord of Ormond's, the best I ever saw. Pepys 1 Diary. I PORTRAIT OF WILLIAM FAITHORNE. Engraved by A. Bannerman.
