THE following little sketch of the Jaloof, or Waloof language, has been formed chiefly upon the testimony of two young Africans during the first three months of their instruc- tion in English : the only knowledge of English which they had previously acquired, being a little of the broken language used in conversing with traders on the African coast. The object in printing an elementary book in Jaloof thus early is, that the young men under instruction, by practising some exercises in reading and writing in their own language in the simple orthography adopted in this essay, may attain the ability for writing in that language such words and sentences as may occasionally occur to them. They may thus greatly facilitate the design of obtaining a larger vocabulary of Jaloof words, and a fuller knowledge of the general form of the language, so as to assist in preparing other elementary books in Jaloof, and eventually, through the Divine Blessing, in opening the way for the translation of the Holy Scriptures into that language. tv. This short outline has had the advantage of being submitted to the kind attention and revisal of a Merchant in London, who, having spent some time in Africa with the Jaloofs, has acquired a sufficient verbal knowledge of the language, freely to converse in it. It was not until these elementary lessons were about to be printed, that information was received of the interesting engagement of Dard, Superintendant of a School on the system of mutual instruction in Senegal, who has report- ed to the Society of Education in Paris his pro- ceedings in reducing the Jaloof language to written order, and his formation of elementary tables, grammar, and dictionary, in the Jaloof with the French. The lessons prepared by Dard would, doubtless, have afforded con- siderable assistance in the execution of the present design, and much is still hoped for from them ; but circumstances do not allow of suspending the publication of this early essay, for the yet desirable purpose of farther in- formation. ORTHOGRAPHY. THE letters adopted in forming the Jaloof words ure twenty-three in number : ^abdefghij klmnoprstuvwy Sounds of the Vowels. When not ending a syllable, When ending a word or a short, as in the English syllable, bug, as in the English a in at, and in mat a in ta-ble e in egg, and in pen e in be i in ink, and in pin i in fi-nal o in oft, and in not o in so u in up, and in but u in du-ty The accented a to have the broad sound as in ah. The g always hard as in get. The s always soft as in sister. The mark for accent on a syllable to be understood as for each succeeding word in the same class. WETHOD OF INSTRUCTION IK REARING AND WRITING. SPELLING, reading, and writing are all from the same lessons. An Alphabet copy, in which the printed and written letters are placed together, is, in the first instance, set before the learner, in order that he may associate in his memory the form of each: only six letters are attempted at once, and these he is ex- pected to repeat, and point out correctly, before he proceeds to any others. When the Alphabet is acquired, the monosyllable tessons are spelled and written in succession, from the printed lesson, and from dictation. When these are attained, easy lessons, and the lists of single words are alternately spelled^ read, and written. CLASSES OF THEjaloofs have nine kinds of words, or parti of speech. 1st. NOUNS, or NAMES, as Gar-up, Tree; Md-lo, Rice. The plural in nouns is sometimes formed by the addition of terms signifying one, many, all, &c and sometimes (when an indefinite number is in- tended) by the addition of ed to the singular, as Ge-an-dr, Fowl Ge-an-dr-ed, Fowls. Masculine and Feminine are sometimes described, by the addition of goor to the noun for masculine, and jegen for feminine. 2d. PRONOUNS, words for Names, as Md, I, T3, Thou, Moo, He, or She, Noo, we, Yoo, You, Ned, They. The possessive pronoun is formed by prefixing st to the personal pronoun singular, and soo to the plural, as se~md, my, soo-noo our. 3d. VERBS, words expressing life or action, as bd* gd-nd, wish ; le-ge, work. The past time is described by the addition of nd to flie original verb ; and the future by the addition of 6e-nct ; as, present, Md un-gd neu. I come, or I ami coming; past, Neu rid, md decm-bd, 1 came yester- day ; future, De-na md been-dd ul~uk, I will write to-morrow* 8 CLASSES OF WORDS. 4th. ADJECTIVES, or ADNOUNS, words to shew th qualities of persons and things, as buh-na, good, toot-e, little.
