WITH THE WILD A LOST LEADER. By the death of the Hon. E tally Lawless Ireland loses a novelist of singular distinction, a poet of high rank and a true lover of the Dark Rosaleen. Miss Lawless began to write late ; she was forty-one when her first book was published. (!iv<>n the health and the time she might have been the great Irish historical novelist we have long hoped for. These brilliant studies, " With Essex in Ireland," and " Maelcha," were but an instalment of what we hoped she would do for the country she loved so dearly ; but, alas, the ill-health that has been hers for many years held her back and we had not even the trilogy. On the other hand, the books she has left us are perfectly matured, considered and definite performances, just as her position in letters is as assured as if she had written as many novels as Sir Walter Scott. She wrote the two historical novels - - ' ; Hurrish," a curiously realistic and powerful story of the Land League days ; " Grania," a Western story, full, as I remember it, of the colours of sea and sky, of bog and mountain, idyllic to some extent, but with familiar and deeper shades in it than the idealist permits. " Gilly " is an exquisite book, and the poems are of quite surprising excel- lence, or would have been surprising if we had recognised in her novels that touch of the poet which the finest of prose must needs possess. Literature is poorer by her loss ; but her death is Ireland's special loss, as her life and work were Ireland's great gain. She was one more added to the spirits of light and leading which an Irish aristocracy has given to the populace. Ireland keeps her in grateful and proud memory. KATHARINE TYNAN. Emily Lawless.
