Numerous portraits of him, painted and engraved, existed at the time of his death. When, in 1880, the late W. S. Baker published in Philadelphia his useful compendium, "The Engraved Portraits of Washington," he was able to catalogue and describe four hundred and thirty-four different portraits. His efforts deserved, and have re ceived the gratitude of all collectors of Wash- ingtoniana. He was the pioneer in his province, and to his sagacious industry all other investigators are bound to acknowledge their indebtedness. But Mr. Baker could not escape the pressure of those limitations under which all makers of catalogues are destined to work when they break new ground. Since 1880 many portraits of Washington, unknown to or undescribed by Baker, have been brought to light, and collectors have come to realize more and more that the iconography of M11257 VI INTRODUCTION. Washington, like that of Napoleon, Franklin, and Lincoln, offers an extraordinarily fruitful field for research. The Grolier Club commemorates in the present exhibition the centenary of the death of Washington. Such a tribute is, however, necessarily restricted in scope, and perhaps of transitory effect. It has been decided, therefore, that the interest of the Club in that side of Washington s history which is more particularly significant to its members, shall take permanent form in a new catalogue of the engraved portraits of our first President, a catalogue which shall include all the portraits discovered since the publication of Mr. Baker s book, or which have been omitted in that work, and which shall correct such errors as it con tains. Mr. Charles Henry Hart has con sented to undertake the task, and the result of his labors will presently appear as one of the regular publications of the Club. It is ex pected that this will be the standard work for which collectors have been waiting. The brief handbook to which these remarks are prefixed, it may be added, is issued merely INTRODUCTION. Vll for the purpose of providing a convenient guide to the exhibition. It is not in any sense based on the work prepared by Mr. Hart. The space in the gallery of the Club does not admit of an attempt to exhibit a com plete collection of the mass of engraved por traits which have risen around the personality of Washington. The aim of the committee has been rather to place on view a number of the rarer prints, with a selection of others sufficient to give the spectator a broad con ception of the manner in which the illustrious subject has been treated by successive genera tions of engravers. The Committee of Arrangements begs to thank Judge Mitchell and Hampton L. Carson, Esq., of Phila., G. R. Barrett, Esq., of Boston, and Mrs. C. C. Worthington and W. C. Crane, Esq., of New York (who are not members of the Club), for rare prints loaned. ERRATA. 1. His Excell: G. Washington Esq r . Bust, in oval. Mezzotint. By C. W. Peale. Portrait of General Washington. Height, 36 in., width, 28 in. Painted 1780, by John Trumbull. The general is represented at full length, in uniform, holding his hat in his right hand, which rests on his sword. He holds a roll of paper in his left hand; a negro servant in a red turban and blue coat is seen at the right, by the side of the general s charger; West Poiirt and the Hudson River in the background. This is the earliest known portrait of Washington painted in oil by Trumbull. Ten years elapsed before he painted the second portrait, now hanging in the New York City Hall. The features closely resemble some of the Peale portraits painted during the Rev olution. The painting exhibited belonged to Mr. De Neufville, the Dutch banker at whose house in Amsterdam Col. Trumbull resided in 1781, while trying to negotiate a loan for the revolted Colonies. This portrait, well known through the engraving by Valentine Green, has been lost sight of for nearly a century, but was discovered last year in London, and brought to this country. 50 EXHIBITION OF ENGRAVED 274. The Gibbs-Channing Washington. Full bust, to the right, on canvas. H. 28 in., W. 24. Extract of a letter from Dr. Wm. F. Channing from whom the present owner purchased the painting in 1889. " The Gibbs Washington is the representative pic ture of Washington s first sitting to Stuart in Sept., 1795. This sitting originated the first type of the portrait by Stuart, showing the right side of Wash ington s face. The Vaughn picture (painted for Sam l Vaughn, sent to London, engraved by Hollo- way, and published there in 1796) arTd other copies which exist belonging to this type, were all painted, though perhaps not finished, in the latter part of 1795 or early part of 1 796. The Gibbs Washington was sold by Stuart at an early date, to his warm per sonal friend Col. George Gibbs (died 1833) of New York, with the statement that it was on the easel while Washington was sitting, and worked upon from life. At a later period Col. Gibbs, having pur chased from Stuart a set of his portraits of the Pres idents of the United States, sold the Gibbs picture to his sister, Mrs. William Ellery Channing, who gave it, thirty years ago, to her son Dr. Wm. F. Channing, the present owner and writer of this let ter. I have a vivid recollection of the picture nearly sixty years ago, hanging in the house of my father, William Ellery Channing, in Boston. The Gibbs Washington has thus never been out of the posses sion of the Gibbs-Channing family since it left Stuart s hands." PORTRAITS OF WASHINGTON. 51 275. Pastel portrait of Washington. Profile to the left. Oval. One of three executed by J. Sharpless at Mt. Vernon and which was presented by Washington to Col. J. McHenry, by whom it was presented or sold to the father of David Hoffman of Baltimore, who died in New York in 1854. By his heirs it was sold to the late Wm. Menzies, from whose son it was acquired by its present owner. 276. Enamel of Washington. By William Birch ; done in Philadelphia. Signed "W. B. 1796." Full bust, to the right. Oval. Painted for William Loughton Smith of S. Carolina, member of the ist Congress of the United States. He died in 1812 leaving this enamel to his daughter Mrs. T. O. Lowndes of Charleston, S. C. It was sold by her granddaughter Miss Elize Wilkins through Dr. G. E. Manigault and passed into the hands of its present owner. 277. Silhouette. By S. Folwell. To the left, underneath, " S.
