PREFACE. 
 
 This little work will be acceptable, I hope, to many Orien- 
 talists. I am inclined to think, too, that it will be found, to 
 some extent, useful ; and for no reason more so, than because 
 the notices it contains, are, for the most part, concise, contain- 
 ing, generally, the name, day and date of death, birth-place, and 
 place of burial of the individual noticed, in a few lines. These 
 are facts regarding authors, divines, and other persons of 
 note, upon which the memory requires frequent refreshings ; 
 yet, how seldom can they be ascertained, without wading 
 through a mass of matter, interesting perhaps to the reader 
 of special biographies, but the source of a great loss of time 
 to the editor, or others seeking for this information only. 
 
 The compilation contains notices of but two hundred and 
 fifty men. It cannot therefore, be considered very complete. 
 As its title imports, the object of the compiler or abbreviate!* 
 has been to chronicle the decease of men of piety.* He has inclu- 
 ded in his list, however, a few of the Caliphs, and many cele- 
 brated authors, Doctors of law and divinity, besides some poets 
 and men of general learning. Of Biographical works, similar

 of a holy man is meritorious. The day, and, if possible, the hour, at which the 
 soul departed, should be discovered : the tomb should, if practicable, also, be 
 visited, and the shade invoked : for it is supposed that departed souls return

in subject to this Obituary, we have several in Persian, and 
 many of them are by no means rare in India. Such for 
 instance as the NafaMt al-Ons of Jami; the Akhbar al-Akhyar 
 of 'Abd al-i7aqq Dihlawi ; the IVlirat al-Jindn of Yaf'ai; the 
 Tadzkirat al-Awlia of the Shaikh Fan'd al-Din 'Attar; and 
 other similar tadzhirahs, are to be found in most good libra- 
 ries. The notices in these books are generally full, and, con- 
 sequently, contain much that has no interest for any but the 
 disciples of mysticism, believers in the wonders and miracles 
 said to have been performed by the remarkable men of their 
 order. The tendency of our Compiler, also, has been to notice 
 men of sanctified memory, at greater length than those who, 
 though good and pious Moslims, obtained celebrity rather on 
 account of their great learning than for their piety ; — He 
 has not, however, indulged it to a very great extent. To the 
 Bani 'Alawi, he has been very partial, so much so indeed, that 
 I have thought genealogical tables* of a portion of the family, 
 would not be unacceptable, and I am induced to add here a 
 few lines regarding them.f 
 
 The Bani 'Alawi claim descent from 'Alyi, and the Prophet, 
 but their right to this distinction is not generally admitted ; 
 and while some are willing to allow them to be the descen- 
 dants of 'Alyi, they deny that they are so descended by Fari- 
 mah. According to their own accounts, Aboo 'Iica Moham- 
 mad b 'Alyi al-'Oraidi, a grandson of J'afar al Cadiq, emigrated 
 with his family and many of his relations from Madinah, about 
 the beginning of the third century, and went to 'Iraq, where 
 
 * Mawlawi Kabir al-Din has bestowed great labour on these tables. Our 
 sources of information, however, were not such as to enable us to assert that 
 it may not contain a few errors, though we trust their number is few. It 
 might have been greatly enlarged, but to do so was not thought necessary.

 the family, Mohammad b Abi Bakr al-Shilli, the author of the 'Iqd al

 he settled at Basrah, His grandson, A/miad b 'Iica, again 
 emigrated from thence, in the year 317 H. ; but not finding 
 a resting place at either Makkah or Madinah,* he proceeded 
 (A. H. 318) to Uadramawt, and took up his abode at a town 
 called i/asisah. A/miad's son removed from this place, and went 
 to dwell at Somal, and there the father of the present large family, 
 Aboo Mohammad 'Alawi b 'Obaid Allah, commonly called sim- 
 ply 'Alawi— was born, about the beginning of the fourth century 
 of the Hijrah.f Somal continued to be the head-quarters of the 
 family until the year A. H. 520, when 'Alawi's great grandson, 
 'Alyi b 'Alawi b Mohammad b 'Alawi, commonly called Khali 
 Qasam, removed it to Tarim,J a town about three miles distant, 
 which city continued to be their chief place of residence for 
 many years, and was long, and is so now I believe, considered 
 a place of great holiness. From 'Alawi, in a direct line, are 
 descended the CMib al-Marba* (d. A. H. 551); the Faqih 
 al-Moqaddam (d. 653) ; al-Saqqaf, (d. 819) ; al-'Aidroos (d. 
 865) ;§ and others whose names are up to the present day held 
 in great veneration in the South of Arabia; — But for further 
 information on these points, I must refer the reader to the 
 genealogical table. 
 
 The manuscript which has furnished the text of this book 
 belongs to the Library of the College of Fort William. It 
 was originally written in Arabic, and translated into Persian,

 but whether by the Compiler or another hand I am unable to 
 say. It has neither preface nor conclusion, and was probably 
 compiled by some pious descendant of the 'Alawi family, for 
 his own use, and never published. Several articles have not 
 the name of any book appended to them ; and these I assume, 
 for the most part, to be original, as they almost all chronicle 
 the deaths of men who died in the twelfth century. The latest 
 date mentioned is A. H. 1160, so it is probable that our Com- 
 piler died about one hundred years ago. 
 
 The Arabic version of the compilation is generally clear, and 
 is written in good language; but the Persian is only Persian in 
 words, the idiom and construction being almost wholly Arabic* 
 It has therefore been necessary to take considerable liber- 
 ties with the text, to make it even clearly intelligible, but 
 I would mention that nothing more has been attempted. The 
 compilation is valuable for its contents, the style in which it is 
 written is of minor importance.

 The first four of these books, I have had the advantage of 
 
 * Neither the Persians nor Indians think it necessary, in translating- works 
 of this nature from the Arabic, to pay any attention to the idiom of the lan- 
 guage into which they translate : — Who would suppose that the jargon of 
 the NafaMt al-Ons was from the pen of the elegant Jami ? The Persian 
 version of this work has been preferred, only, on account of Persian being 
 more o-enerally read. The names and titles, &c, however, as they presented 
 a strange appearance in Persian, have been left in the original Arabic. 
 
consulting,* and the result has not been unfavourable to our 
 author. For the 'Iqd al-Jowahir wa al-dororf, and the Noor 
 al-Safir, which have been largely extracted from, I have made 
 much inquiry, but unfortunately without success. I had a 
 copy of Yaf'ai's book, the Mirat al-Jinan, but I could not use it, 
 as it is in that state, in which, alas ! too many valuable MSS. are 
 found in India, viz: — crumbling to dust!

 both of Yaf'ai, and other books. But the Mashr'a- of MoAammad al-Shilli 
 has been of more use to me than any other book. I must not moreover 
 fail to notice the obligations I am under to Mo/iammad Ya Sin, a worthy 
 and excellent Arab, who having spent the greater portion of his life* in visit- 
 ing tombs and holy places, has a wonderful knowledge in these matters. He 
 enabled me to correct the orthography of many proper names.
