BURLING'1 ON: FREE PRESS STEA.M BOOK AND JOB PRINTIN(G HOUSE. 1875. 2NOTE. In the following pages a star (*) prefixed to a person's name indicates his decease; attached to a date, it denotes the year of his death. In this edition an attempt has been made to give, besides the academic degrees and mnore important public offices, the present residence and profession of each Alumnus. It was thought that these additions would increase both the, interest and the usefulness of the Catalogue. Special request is made that all errors and omissions which may be detected, be communicated at once to the Librarian. The last General Catalogue carried the announcemlent of a Biographical Catalogue of the Alumni, to be prepared by a member of the Class of IS39. His death interrupted this work before fairly begun, and no one has since been found willing to undertake a task requiring so much of time and patient labor. PRESIDENTS, ELErCTE D. The first portion of this Catalogue had already gone to press, before it was decided to undertake the preparation of the following Roll of Honor. Of necessity the compilation has been hastily made, and with less of correspondence and investigation than was to be desired. It was thought to be due, both to the University and to those of her sons who responded to the call of the Country, that an attempt should be made to show what part the Alumni and Undargraduates of the University actually took in the great struggle. If those who can supply the defects and rectify the errors of this list will send their corrections to the Librarian, the next edition of the General Catalogue will present a complete and corrected Roll. No apology is believed to be needed for the present tentative publication. It was feared that a proper Roll might never be made up, unless a beginning were made now. The Compiler of the foregoing pages very cheerfully assumes the responsibility for all errors, though some of them were derived from the "best" sour ces. Many of them would have been avoided if more time had been allowed him, or it other duties had been less exacting; in particular, certain errors of the press might have been obviated, if the printing had not been so rapidly pushed, or if the pressure of other engagements had permitted him to scan the proof -sleets more carefully. For many of the corrections given above thanks are due to various graduates who have kindly examined advance copies of the Catalogue. Further corrections are earnestly solicited, and especially such in'ormation in regard to residence, profession, academic and other honors, decease, and year of death, as will serve to complete the record against each name in the Roll of Academic Alumni. The College authorities are specially desirous to know the P. 0. address of every gresduate; and when changes of address occur, they ask that they be promptly notified to the Librarian. Let no one think it strange if he receive no College documents, when the Faculty is left in ignorance of his whereabouts-nay, of his continued existence. A careful record is kept here of addresses, so far as they can be ascertained; and every A lumnus should hear from his Alma Mater certainly once, generally thrice, a year. And particularly, the names and addresses of Class Secretaries are wanted. A list of these Class Officers would be given here, if only they were known to the Librarlan. Will not some of the older graduates help us to make up a complete file of College documents? The Library has no Annual Catalogues back of I835, except those of 1822 and 1823; none of the years 1837, 1840, 1842. Schedules are wanted of the different exhibitions, especially of those before 1847; also Programmes of Commencement Exercises previous to 1851. It is of no use to say these should have been preserved in the Library: they are not there. Address, THE LIBRARIAN, University of Vt., Burlington, Vt. Commencement will occur in 1876 and thereafter on the last Wednesday in June.
