Atomic Energy Commission under contract . With the Union Carbide Corporation. . 'ORNL - AEC - OFFICIAL .. ............... ....----- ORNI - AEC - OFFICIAL The ORNL Remotely operated Mlter Photometer() consists of a "Densichron -2 "12) photometric unit (right, Mg. 1) and a remote sensing unit (center). Constent-voltage transformers for these are housed in a control box (left). This note describes the new remote sensing unit, shown partially ..dismantled in Fig. 2, which was designed in order to make use of a variety of absorption cells (cuvettes) and to simplify remote maintenance. The · ORNI - AEC - OFFICIAL remote unit includes the light source, cuvette compartment, cuvettes and carrier, several interference filters and their holders, and a Densichron phototube probe. The probes are used as bought; the light source and cuveite carrier are modified. · LIGHT SOURCE The tungsten light source is taken from an Ao Spencer type 653 illuminator(5). Several bulbs having the electrical leads soldered to their base contacts in order to ensure stability of the emitted light are prepared for each 11).uminator. Each bulb 18 mounted in a sleeve that . will slip into the base 'assembly (background, Fig. 2) in order to make remote bulb replacement easy. . A small thumb screw : that holds the base assembly in place has been replaced with one having a head large enough to permit handling by Model 8 manipulators. .- .. . . -.- -.-. ABSORPTION CELL COMPARTMENT ORNI - AEC - OFFICIAL The body of the remote sensing unit, machined from a solid block of aluminum, has a compartment large enough to accommodate 50-mm' path length absorption cells or & vessel for photometric titrations. It is massive enough to remain in place during fairly rough bandling, and to dissipate the heat generated by the light source without a marked increase in temperature. ORNL - AEC - OFFICIAL - - - : . · ORNL - AEC - OFFICIAL : ORNL - AEC - OFFICIAL Its black finish contributes markedly' to heat dissipation. It sits on disposable "lega" made from standard plastic-sleeved electrical banana plugs , The near-side slot (Fig. 2) fits the filter hold- er. A smaller slot in the far side can be used for a heat filter(2), 17. necessary. The phototube probe fits into a recess in the side and 18 se- cured by the large thumb (or rather, manipulator) screw. Blue-sensitive and red-sensitive Densichron probes can be easily exchanged remotely ca this unit. . One light-beam defining aperture is machined into the block; Another is part of the Densichron probe. Black-anodized metal surfaces reduce the .. --- reflection of stray light into the probéo. CARRIER The Coleman cuvette carrier which accomodates 20 x 40 mm rectangular and 25 mm or 50 mom cylindrical absorption cells has a slotted aluminum piece :: added to the handle so that it can be picked up by manipulators.' Adapters as shown in Fig. 2 were made for the commonly used 13 x 13 mm absorption cells. Eitier of a pair of cells can be positioned in the light bean by a manipulator. FILTER HOLDERS . Holders for the interference filters used to isolate chosen waveleng tins 17 .. . - . . -. are designed so that the filters can be removed from the holders and reinserted remotely. This is normally done only when a filter has been damaged. Several holders, each holding the filter for a given wavelength, are furnished with each instrument. ri -'. - CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION ORNI - AEC - OFFICIAL Detailed construction drawings are available.
