P R E F A C E.
RAILWAY Junctions are not only numerous but complicated. The object of this work is to explain their
intricacies, and to make clear the connections between the several systems of Railways in Great Britain, and to show
at a glance the Junctions, Stations, Properties, Running Powers, and Working Arrangements and Gauges, also
the Special Allowances, under Act of Parliament.
Maps of Great Britain have been published for general reference, but none of them on a scale sufficiently
large to show the different connections clearly. These Diagrams are therefore intended to supply, in detail, those
minute particular required to be thoroughly known by Railway Officers, and by all whose business it is to master
the complicated arrangements and intricacies involved in working the traffic, and in the settlement and auditing of
accounts, as well as those whose professional duties require of them a perfect knowledge of the grammar of the railw

THE different properties are shown in colours; the distances in miles and chains.
A complete list of the Running Powers and Working Arrangements, and Special Allowances under Act of Parliament, arranged in
alphabetical order, follow the Index, also a list of Alternative Routes, formed by virtue of Running Powers, being exercised by
one Company over the Line of another, for one description of traffic only, and Gauge of Lines,
Where Lines cross each other on different levels, they are distinctly marked thus =|[= . The words “Level Crossing ” are
