P. F. E. F. A C E . *—a -º- a -4- -sur-w-sur-ºr-º- THE Tonic Sol-fa system has established its position in great Britian as the one true musical method for schools. Its processes are natural, its steps perfectly graded, and its helpfulness is realized equally by the teacher and the pupil. It is also recognized as the only proper medium of approach to the difficulties of the staff. It prepares for the staff exactly as arithmetic prepares for algebra. The time is fast approaching when the staff will no more be presented at the beginning of the study of music than ac, y and z are now presented at the beginning of the study of mathematics. The second book of this series is published first, because it furnishes what the teacher needs for introducing the system. It is issued in three forms in order to meet the varying conditions of differ- ent schools. Part I consists of the first and second steps, Part II of the third step, Part III of the fourth step, and the complete form embraces the first four steps of the system. The book has been prepared with the utmost care, and will be found to present the following valuable characteristics: 1. It is perfectly graded. 2. Each new fact or principle as introduced is confirmed and established by a variety of inter- esting exercises and songs. * 3. The pupils are trained in part-singing from the outset by easy and attractive combinations. 4. The songs are made up of cheerful, singable melodies that the children will be sure to like. 5. The words are pure and wholesome, adapted to the schoolroom and to the various ages of the pupils. 6. Special exercises are given for training in expression. 7. As the theory is needed by the teacher and not by the pupils, it is presented separately in a small “Manual,” and the space of this book is filled entirely with exercises and songs in a condensed form, giving opportunity for an almost unlimited variety. | ; ; # § º E O O ESC II.
