COMPASS AND CHART. lU Lord Go.d of truth and grace, Teach us that death to shun, Lest we be banished from thy face And evermore undone. 29. And the Lord shall be king over all the earth : in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one. Zech. 14:9. All hail the power of Jesus' name ! Let angels prostrate fall ; Bring forth the royal diadem, And crown him Lord of aU. Let every kindred, every tribe, On this terrestrial ball. To him all majesty ascribe, And crown him Lord of all. 30. From the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same, my name shall be great among the Gen- tiles ; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering ; for my name shall be great 172 COMPASS AND CHAET. among the heathen, saith the Lord of hosts. Mal. 1:11. Let all the earth then' voices raise, To sing the choicest psalms of praise, To sing and bless Jehovah's name : His glory let the heathen know, His wonders to the nations Show, And all his saving works proclaim. 31. And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let Jiim that is athirst coine. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. Rev. 22:17. Come, weary soul, with sin distressed, Come, and accept the promised rest; The Saviour's gracious call obey. And cast your gloomy fears away. Here mercy's boundless ocean flows, To cleanse your guilt and heal your woes ; Pardon and life, and endless peace : How rich the gift, how free the grace ! HYMNS FOR VARIOUS OCCASIONS. 1. MORNING HYMN. Awake, my soul, and with the sun Thy daily course of duty run ; Shake off dull sloth, and early rise To i^ay thy morning sacrifice. Glory to thee, who safe hast kept, And hast refreshed me while I slept ; Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake, I may of endless life partake. Lord, I my vows to thee renew: Scatter my sins as morning dew ; Guard my first springs of thought and will, And with thyself my spirit fill. Direct, control, suggest, this day, All I design, or do, or say ; That all my powers, with all their might, In thy sole glory may unite. 174 COMPASS AND CHAKT. a. MORNING HYMN. Once more, my soul, the rising day Salutes thy waking eyes ; Once more, my voice, thy tribute pay To him who rules the skies. Night unto night his name repeats, The day renews the sound. Wide as the heaven on which he sits To turn the seasons round. 'T is he supports my mortal frame ; My tongue shall speak his praise ; My sins would rouse his wrath to flame, And yet his wrath delays. A thousand wretched souls are fled Since the last setting sun. And yet thou lengthenest out my thread, And yet my moments run. Great God, let all my hours be thine, While I enjoy the light ; Then shall my sun in smiles decline, And bring a pleasant night. 3. MORNING HYMN. God of the morning, at whose voice The cheerful sun makes haste to rise, And like a giant doth rejoice To run his journey through the skies j COMPASS AKD CHART. 175 From the fair chambers of the east The circuit of his race begins ; And without weariness or rest, Round the whole earth he flies and shines : Oh, Hke the sun, may I fulfil The appointed duties of the day ; Witti ready mind and active will March on and keep my heavenly way. But I shall rove and lose the race, If God, my sun, should disappear. And leave me in this world's wild maze, To follow every wandering star. Give me thy counsel for my guide, And then receive me to thy bliss ; All my desires and hopes beside. Are faint and cold compared with this. 4. EVENING HYMN. Glory to thee, my God, this night, For all the blessings of the light ; Keep me, keep me. King of kings, Beneath the shadow of thy wings. Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son, The iU that I this day have done ; That with the world, myself, and thee, I, ere I sleep, at peace may be. 176 COMPASS AND CHAET. Teach me to live, that I may dread The grave as little as my bed ; Teach me to die, that so I may Rise, glorious, at the awful day. Oh let my soul on thee repose. And may sweet sleep my eyelids close — Sleep that shall me more vigorous mate, To serve my God when I awake. Oh when shall I, in endless day, For ever chase dark sleep away ; And hymns divine with angels sing, Glory to thee, eternal King ! Praise God, from whom all blessings flow ; Praise him, all creatures here below ; Praise him above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. 5. EVENING HYMN. Now from labor and from care Evening shades have set me free ; In the work of praise and prayer. Lord, I would converse with thee : Oh, behold me from above, Fill me with a Saviour's love. COMPASS AND CHART. HT Sin and sorrow, guilt and woe, Wither all my earthly joys ; Naught can charm me here below But my Saviour's melting voice : Lord, forgive, thy grace restore — Make me thine for evermore. For the blessings of this day, For the mercies of this hour, For the Gospel's cheering ray, For the Spirit's quickening power, Grateful notes to thee I raise. Oh accept my song of praise. 6. EVENING HYMN. Saviour, breathe an evening blessing, Ere repose our spirits seal ; Sin and want we come confessing, Thou canst save and thou canst heal. Though destruction walk around us, Though the arrow near us fly, Angel-guards from thee surround us, We are safe, if thou art nigh. Though the night be dark and dreary, Darkness cannot hide from thee ; Thou art He who, never weary, Watchest where thy people be. 12 178 COMPASS AND CHAET. Should swift death this night o'ertake us, And our couch become our tomb, May the morn in heaven awake us. Clad in light and deathless bloom. 7. SABBATH MORNING. Another six days' work is done. Another Sabbath is begun ; Return, my soul, enjoy thy rest, Improve the day thy God has blessed. Come, bless the Lord, w^hose love assigns So sweet a rest to wearied minds ; Provides an antepast of heaven, And gives, this day, the food of seven. that our thoughts and thanks may rise As grateful incense to the skies ! And draw from heaven that sweet repose Which none but he that feels it knows. This heavenly calm within the breast Is the dear pledge of glorious rest Which for the church of God remains, The end of cares, the end of pains. In holy duties, let the day In holy pleasures pass away ; How sweet a Sabbath thus to spend, In hope of one that ne'er shall end. COMPASS AND CHAET. 1T9 8. THE SABBATH-DAY. This is the day the Lord hath made, He calls the hours his own ; Let heaven rejoice, let earth be glad, And praise surround the throne. To-day he rose and left the dead, And Satan's empire fell ; To-day the saints his triumphs spread, And all his wonders tell. Hosanna to the anointed King, To David's holy Son: Help us, Lord ; descend and bring Salvation from thy throne. Blest be the Lord, who comes to men With messages of grace ; Who comes, in God his Father's name. To save our sinful race. Hosanna in the highest strains The church on earth can raise ; The highest heavens in which he reigns Shall give him nobler praise. 9. THE SABBATH. A Sabbath well spent Brings a week of content. With health for the toils of to-morrow : 180 COMPASS AND CHART. But a Sabbath profaned, Whatsoe'er may be gained, Is a certain forerunner of sorrow. 10. FAR AT SEA. Star of Peace to wanderers weary. Bright the beams that smile on me : Cheer the pilot's vision dreary, Far, far at sea. Star of Hope, gleam o'er the billow; Bless the soul that sighs for thee ; Bless the sailor's lonely pillow, Far, far at sea. Star of Faith, when winds are mocking All his toil, he flies to thee ; Save him on the billows rocking, Far, far at sea. Star Divine, safely guide him. Bring the wanderer home to thee ; Sore temptations long have tried him. Far, far at sea. 11. ARRIVAL IN PORT. When o'er the mighty deep we rode, By winds and storms assailed, We called upon the ocean's God, His mercy never failed. COMPASS AND CHART. 181 The raging tempest heard his voice, The winds obeyed his will ; The elements withheld their noise, And all the floods were still. With joy we hailed the distant shore, And safe the vessel moored ; With grateful hearts that happy hour A song of praise we poured. While thus o'er surging waves we roam, Thy goodness, Lord, we see ; Though distant from our native home, We are not far from thee. And when the voyage of life is past. And we are called to die, may we see thy face at last, In bliss beyond the sky. la. GOD'S PROTECTION TO MARINERS., How are thy servants blessed, Lord ; How sure is their defence ! Eternal Wisdom is their guide, Their help, Omnipotence. In foreign realms and lands remote, Supported by thy care. Through burning climes they pass unhurt, And breathe in tainted air. 182 COMPASS AND CHAET. When by the dreadful tempest borne High on the broken wave, They know th(5u art not slow to hear, Nor impotent to save. The storm is laid ; the winds retire, Obedient to thy will ; The sea, that roars at thy command. At thy command is still. In midst of danger, fear, and death. Thy goodness we '11 adore ; We '11 praise thee for thy mercies past, And humbly hope for more. 13. TRUST IN GOD AMID PERILS. In time of fear, When trouble 's near, I look to thine abode ; Though helpers fail. And foes prevail, I'll jout my trust in God. And what is life. But toil and strife ? What terror has the grave ? Thine arm of power, In peril's hour. The trembling soul will save. COMPASS AND CHAKT. 183 In darkest skies Though storms arise, I will not be dismayed: Oh God of light, And boundless might, My soul on thee is stayed ! 14. SAFETY IN THE STORM. The billows swell, the winds are high, Clouds overcast my wintry sky ; Out of the depths to thee I call, My fears are great, my strength is small. Oh Lord, the pilot's part i^erform, And guide and guard me through the storm ; Defend me from each threatening ill. Control the waves — say, "Peace; be still!" Amidst the roaring of the sea My soul still hangs her hopes on thee ; Thy constant love, thy faithful care. Is aU that saves me from despair. 15. CHRISTMAS HYMN. While shepherds watched their flocks by night, All seated on the ground, The angel of the Lord came down. And glory shone around. 184 COMPASS AND CHART. " Fear not," said he, for mighty dread Had seized their troubled mind ; " Glad tidings of great joy I bring To you and all mankind. To you in David's town, this day, Is born of David's line. The Saviour, who is Christ the Lord, And this shall be the sign: The heavenly babe you there shall find To human view displayed, All meanly wrapped in swathing bands, And in a manger laid." Thus spoke the seraph, and forthwith Appeared a shining throng Of angels, praising God on high. And thus addressed their song: " All glory be to God on high. And to the earth be peace ; Good will henceforth, from heaven to men, Begin, and never cease," 16. BIRTH OF CHRIST. Mortals awake, with angels join, And chant the solemn lay ; Joy, love, and gratitude combine To hail th' auspicious day. COMPASS AND CHART. 185 In heaven the rapturous song began, And sweet seraphic fire Through all the shining legions ran, And strung and tuned the lyre. Swift through the vast expanse it flew, And loud the echo rolled ; The theme, the song, the joy was new ; 'T was more than heaven could hold. Down through the portals of the sky The impetuous torrent ran ; And angels flew with eager joy To bear the news to man. Hark ! the cherubic armies shout, And glory leads the song ; Good will and peace are heard throughout The harmonious, heavenly throng. With joy the chorus we '11 repeat: " Glory to God on high ! Good will and peace are now complete, Jesus was born to die." 17. A BIRTHDAY HYMN. Teach me the measure of my days. Thou Maker of my frame, I would survey life's narrow space, And learn how frail I am. 186 COMPASS AND CHART. A span is all that we can boast, An inch or two of time ; Man is but vanity and dust, In all his flower and prime. See the vain race of mortals move, Like shadows o'er the plain ; They rage and strive, desire and love. But all the noise is vain. Some walk in honor's gaudy show ; Some dig for golden ore. They toil for heirs they know not who, And straight are seen no more. What should I wish, or wait for, then. From creatures, earth, and dust? They make our expectations vain, And disappoint our trust. Now I forbid my carnal hope, My fond desires recall ; I give my mortal interest up. And make my God my all. 18. FOR A BIRTHDAY. My days are numbered by my God, How many or how few ; And every danger of my road Passes beneath his view. COMPASS AND CHART. 187 Determined are my months by him, And dated all my hours, Till death shall chase life's empt}^ dream, And wake my nobler powers. How long or short shall be my days, Is hid in his decree ; And which of death's ten thousand ways Appointed is for me. The line he draws I cannot trace. Nor would I wish to know The time, the manner, or the place, When he shall bid me go. Let but his grace my soul prepare, And make my life his o\\ai. It matters little when, or where, Or how, I lay it down. 19. NEW-YEARS DAY. Come, let us anew Our journey pursue, Roll round with the year, And never stand still till the Master appear. His adorable will Let us gladly fulfil. And our talents improve, By the patience of hope, and the labor of love. 188 COMPASS AND CHAKT. Our life is a dream ; Our time, as a stream, Glides swiftly away ; And the fugitive moment refuses to stay. The arrow is flown — The moment is gone — The millennial year Rushes on to our view, and eternity's here. Oh that each in the day Of His coming may say, " I have fought my way through ; I have finished the work which thou gav'st me to do." Oh that each from his Lord, May receive the glad word, « Well and faithfully done ! Enter into my joy, and sit down on my throne." 30. NEW-YEARS DAY. While with ceaseless course the sun Hasted through the former year, Many souls their race have run, Never more to meet us here : Fixed in an eternal state. They have done with all below ; We a little longer wait, But how little, none can know. COMPASS AND CHART. 189 As the winged arrow flies Speedily the mark to find ; As the lightning from the skies Darts, and leaves no trace behind ; Swiftly thus our fleeting days Bear us down life's rapid stream: Upward, Lord, our spirits raise — All below is but a dream. Thanks for mercies past receive ; Pardon of our sins renew: From this moment may we live With eternity in view: Bless thy word to young and old ; Shed abroad a Saviour's love ; And when life's short tale is told, May we dwell with thee above. ai. FOR THE OPENING YEAR. Great God, we sing that mighty hand, By which supported still we stand ; The opening year thy mercy shows ; Let mercy crown it till it close. By day, by night — at home, abroad, Still we are guarded by our God ; By his incessant bounty fed. By his unerring counsel led. 190 COMPASS AND CHAET. With grateful hearts the past we own ; The future — all to us unknown — We to thy guardian care commit And peaceful leave before thy feet. In scenes exalted or depressed, Be thou our joy, and thou our rest; Thy goodness all our hopes shall raise, Adored through all our changing days. When death shall close our earthly songs. And seal in silence mortal tongues, Our helper, God, in whom we trust, Shall keep our souls, and guard our dust. 22, THE STREAM OF LIFE. On like a river It bears me ever — The rushing stream of life ! I grasp the rudder ; I start and shudder ; The waters roar in strife. Many a year Has brought me here, From the sources of life's river ; And one by one They bear me on To God, my spirit's giver. COMPASS AND CHART. 191 Gentle and slow Began the flow Of the waters from the fountain ; But brook and rill Sprang from each hill, And the torrent from the mountain ; Till the silver thread At the fountain head Expanded to a river ; And deep and black On its hurried track It dashes now for ever. And well I know That its onward flow Is hasting to an ocean, Whose broad expanse To my soul's advance May heave in wild commotion. Oh God of life, Amid the strife Of life's swift rolling river, Take thou the helm. Lest death o'er whelm My helpless soul for ever. 1^2 COMPASS AND CHART. a3. MAN MORTAL. li. M. Through every age, eternal God, Thou art our rest, our safe abode ; High was thy throne, ere heaven was made, Or earth thy humble footstool laid. Long hadst thou reigned ere time began, Or dust was fashioned to a man ; And long thy kingdom shall endure. When earth and time shall be no more. But man, weak man, is born to die. Made up of guilt and vanity ; Thy dreadful sentence. Lord, was just: " Return, ye sinners, to your dust." Death, like an overflowing stream, Sweeps us away, our life 's a dream — An empty tale, a morning-flower, Cut down and withered in an hour. 34. FUNERAL. C. M. Beneath our feet and o'er our head Is equal warning given ; Beneath us lie the countless dead. Above us is the heaven. Death rides on every passing breeze, And lurks in every flower ; Each season has its own disease. Its perils every hour. COMPASS AND CHART. 193 Our eyes have seen the rosy light Of youth's soft cheek decay, And fate descend, in sudden night, On manhood's middle day. Our eyes have seen the steps of age Halt feebly to the tomb ; And yet shall earth our hearts engage ' And dreams of days to come ? Turn, mortal, turn ; thy danger know ; Where'er thy foot can tread, The earth rings hollow from below, And warns thee of her dead. Turn, Christian, turn ; thy soul apply To truths divinely given : The forms which underneath thee lie Shall live, for hell, or heaven. 35. THE STAR OF BETHLEHEM. L.. M. "When, marshalled on the nightly plain. The glittering hosts bestud the sky. One star alone, of all the train. Can fix the sinner's wandering eye. Hark ! hark ! to God the chorus breaks, From every host, from every gem ; But one alone the Saviour speaks, It is the Star of Bethlehem. 13 194 COMPASS AND CHART. Once on the raging seas I rode, The storm was loud, the night was dark. The ocean yawned, and rudely blowed The wind that tossed my foundering bark. Deep horror then my vitals froze, Death-struck, I ceased the tide to stem; When suddenly a star arose. It was the Star of Bethlehem. It was my guide, my light, my all ; It bade my dark forebodings cease ; And through the storm and danger's thrall It led me to the port of peace. Now safely moored, my perils o'er, I '11 sing, first in night's diadem. For ever and for evermore, The Star— the Star of Bethlehem. 36. CHRIST PRECIOUS. C. M. How sweet the name of Jesus sounds , In a believer's ear ! It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds, And drives away his fear. It makes the wounded spirit whole. And calms the troubled breast ; 'T is manna to the hungry soul. And to the weary, rest. COMPASS AND CHART. 195 Jesus, my shepherd, husband, friend. My prophet, priest, and king. My Lord, my life, my way, my end, Accept the praise I bring. Weak is the effort of my heart. And cold my warmest thought ; But when I see thee as thou art, I '11 praise thee as I ought. Till then, I would thy love proclaim, With every fleeting breath ; And may the music of thy name Refresh my soul in death. 37. JESUS THE REFUGE. Ts. Jesus, lover of my soul. Let me to thy bosom fly. While the billows near me roll, While the tempest still is high ; Hide me. Oh my Saviour, hide, Till the storm of life be past ; Safe into the haven guide ; Oh receive my soul at last. Other refuge have I none. Hangs my helpless soul on thee. Leave, ah, leave me not alone ; Still support and comfort me. 196 COMPASS AND CHART. All my trust on thee is stayed ; All my help from thee I bring ; Cover my defenceless head With the shadow of th}^ wing. Plenteous grace with thee is found, Grace to pardon all my sins ; Let the healing streams abound, Make and keep me pure within : Thou of life the fountain art, Freely let me take of thee ; Spring thou up within my heart — Rise to all eternity. 38. THE GOSPEL SHIP. P. M. The gospel ship has long been sailing, Bound for Canaan's peaceful shore ; All who wish to sail to glory, Come and welcome, rich and poor. Chorus — " Glory, glory, hallelujah !" All her sailors loudly cry, " See the blissful port of glory Open to each faithful eye." Thousands she has safely landed Far beyond this mortal shore ; Thousands still are sailing in her, Yet there 's room for thousands more. COMPASS AND CHART. 19*1 Waft along this noble vessel, All ye gales of gospel grace, Carrying every faithful sailor To his heavenly landing-place. Chorus — " Glory," etc. Come, poor sinners, come to Jesus, Sail with us through life's rough sea, Then with us you will be happy, Happy through eternity. Chorus — " Glory," etc. Port your helm, run into harbor, By your anchor, sailors, stand, Welcomed by your great Commander • To the joys at his right hand. Chorus — " Glorv," etc. ao. SAILOR'S HYMN. 8s and Ts. Tossed upon life's raging billow. Sweet it is, Lord, to know Thou didst press a sailor's pillow, And canst feel a sailor's woe. Never slumbering, never sleeping. Though the night be dark and drear, Thou the faithful watch art keeping: "All, all's well," thy constant cheer. 198 COMPASS AND CHART. And though loud the wind is howling, Fierce though flash the lightnings red, ■ Darkly though the storm-cloud's scowling O'er the sailor's anxious head ; Thou canst calm the raging ocean. All its noise and tumult still; Hush the tempest's wild commotion, At the bidding of thy will. Thus my heart the hope will cherish. While to thee I lift mine eye ; Thou wilt save me ere I perish, Thou wilt hear the sailor's cry. 30. GOD'S PROTECTION TO MARINERS. 7s. They that toil upon the deep, And in vessels light and frail O'er the mighty waters sweep, With the billow and the gale, Mark what wonders God performs. When he speaks, and unconfined, Rush to battle all his storms, In the chariots of the wind. Up to heaven their bark is whirled On the mountain of the wave ; Downward suddenly 'tis hurled To the abysses of the grave ; COMPASS AND CHART. 199 Mid the tempests now they roll, As intoxicate with wine ; Terrors paralyze their soul, Helm they quit and hope resign. Then unto the Lord they cry : He inclines a gracious ear ; Sends deliv'rance from on high, Rescues them from all their fear. Oh that men would praise the Lord For his goodness to their race ; For the wonders of his word. And the riches of his grace. 31. GOING TO SEA. S. M. Great God, we launch again Upon the mighty deep ; Do thou, the Sovereign of the main, Our souls and bodies keep. If hardship and distress We should be called to bear, Oh let thine all-supporting grace • Preserve us from despair. Be thou for ever nigh, That we may hear thee say, " Be not afraid ; for it is I, To guard you on your way." 200 COMPASS AND CHAET. Then come whatever will, We shall not be afraid, While Christ continues with lis still. And says, " Be not afraid." 33. CHRISTOUR CONFIDENCE. 6s and 4:S. My faith looks up to thee, Thou Lamb of Calvary, Saviour divine. Now hear me while I pray ; Take all my guilt away ; Oh let me from this day X Be wholly thine. May thy rich grace impart Strength to my fainting heart, My zeal inspire : As thou hast died for me. Oh may my love to thee . Pure, warm, and changeless be, A living fire. While life's dark maze I tread, And griefs around me spread, Be thou my guide : COMPASS AND CHART. 201 Bid darkness turn to day, Wipe sorrow's tears away, Nor let me ever stray From thee aside. When ends hfe's transient dream, When death's cold, sullen stream • Shall o'er me roll, Blest Saviour, then in love Fear and distrust remove ; Oh bear me safe above, A ransomed soul. 33. PROTECTION. 8s, 7s, and 4:S. Guide us. Oh thou great Jehovah, Wanderers on the mighty deep : From the storm and raging tempest Deign our floating bark to keep ; Lord of heaven, Bid the breeze propitious blow. Be our safeguard through the night-watch, And our guardian all the day, To our destined port in safety Give us swift and joyful way ; Strong Deliverer, Be thou still our strength and shield. 202 COMPASS AND CHART. And when life's short voyage is over, In the haven of the blest May we, guided by thy Spirit, Find an everlasting rest : Father, hear ns, For the great Redeemer's sake. 34. DRIVING TO PORT. 7s and 6s. Though hard the winds are blowing, And loud the billows roar. Full swiftly we are going To our dear native shore. The billows breaking o'er us. The storms that round us swell, Are aiding to restore us To all we loved so well. So sorrow often presses Life's mariner along ; Afflictions and distresses Are gales and billows strong. The sharper and severer The storms of life we meet, The sooner and the nearer Is heaven's eternal seat. COMPASS AND CHART. 20B Come then, afflictions dreary, Sharp sickness pierce my breast ; You only bear the weary More quickly home to rest. 35. SAVE, OR WE PERISH. 13s. When through the torn sail the wild tempest is streaming. When o'er the dark wave the red lightning is gleaming, Nor hope lends a ray the poor seaman *o cherish. We fly to our Maker: "Save, Lord, or we perish." Oh Jesus, once rocked on the breast of the billow. And roused by the shriek of despair from thy pillow. Now seated in glory, the mariner cherish, Who cries in his trouble, " Save, Lord, or we perish." And Oh, when the whirlwind of passion is raging, When sin in our hearts its wild warfare is waging, 204 COMPASS AND CHART. Send down thy good Spirit, thy ransomed to cherish; Rebuke the destroyer: "Save, Lord, or we perish." 36. THE PENITENT'S PRAYER. L.. M. Show pity, Lord ; Lord, forgive ; Let a repenting rebel live : Are not thy mercies large and free ? May not a sinner trust in thee ? My crimes are great, but can't surpass The power and glory of thy grace ; Great God, thy nature hath no bound, So let thy pardoning love be found. Oh wash my soul from every sin, And make my guilty conscience clean ; Here on my heart the burden lies. And past offences pain mine eyes. My lips with shame my sins confess, Against thy law, against thy grace : Lord, should thy judgment grow severe, I am condemned, but thou art clear. Should sudden vengeance seize my breath, I must pronounce thee just in death : And if my soul were doomed to hell, Thy righteous law approves it well. COMPASS AND CHAKT. 205 Yet save a trembling sinner, Lord, Whose hope still hovering round thy word. Would light on some sweet promise there, Some sure support against despair. 37. JUST AS I AM. 8s and 6s. Just as I am, without one plea, But that thy blood was shed for me, And that thou bid'st me come to thee, Lamb of God, I come. Just as I am, and waiting not To rid my soul of one dark blot ; To thee, w^hose blood can cleanse each spot, Lamb of God, I come. Just as I am — poor, wretched, blind ; Sight, riches, healing of the mind, Yea, all I need in thee I find — Lamb of God, I come. Just as I am — though tossed about, With many a conflict, many a doubt ; Fightings within, and fears without — Lamb of God, I come. Just as I am — thou wilt receive. Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve, Because thy promise I believe — Lamb of God, I come. 206 COMPASS AND CHART. Just as I am — thy love unknown Has broken every barrier down ; Now to be thine, yea, thine alone, Lamb of God, I come. 38. CHRIST OUR SACRIFICE. S. M. Not all the blood of beasts, On Jewish altars slain, Could give the guilty conscience peace, Or wash away the stain. But Christ the heavenly Lamb Takes all our sins away ; A sacrifice of nobler name, And richer blood than they. My faith would lay her hand On that dear head of thine, While like a penitent I stand And there confess my sin. My soul looks back to see The burdens thou didst bear When hanging on th' accursed tree, And hopes her guilt was there. Believing, we rejoice To see the curse remove ; We bless the Lamb with cheerful voice, And sing his bleeding love. COMPASS A1^^D CHART. 201 39. HOMEWARD BOUND. 10s aud 4s. Out on an ocean all boundless we ride, We 're homeward bound ; Tossed on the waves of a rough, restless tide, We 're homeward bound ; Far from the safe, quiet harbor we 've rode, Seeknig our Father's celestial abode. Promise of which on us each he bestowed ; We 're homeward bound. Wildly the storm sweeps us on as it roars, We 're homeward bound ; Look! yonder lie the bright heavenly shores, We 're homeward bound. Steady, pilot; stand firm at the wheel: Steady ; we soon shall outweather the gale ; Oh, how we fly 'neath the full, swelling sail ; We 're homeward bound. Into the harbor of heaven now we glide. We 're home at last. Softly we drift on its bright silver tide, We 're home at last. Glory to God, all our dangers are o'er, We stand secure on the glorified shore ; Glory to God, we will shout evermore. We 're home at last. INDEX OF FIRST LINES.
