INTRODUCTION.
From the Report of the Provost Marshal General, made in
1864, are quoted the following statements to convey some idea
of the extreme care bestowed in the selection of these officers,
and the commendahly zealous spirit of exaction displayed by
the War Department in their appointment:
" Officers desiring admission, are required to produce recom¬
mendations from the officers under whom they have served in
the field, and to pass a thorough examination as to their fitness
in all respects for the positions which they seek."
" The discipline and instruction are good."
"Many of the officers, including some detached from their
regiments for special service, are filling with ability and useful¬
ness positions of honor and responsibility."
COLONELS.
John Hendrickson—Aged 34, from
the State of New York, entered the vol¬
unteer service as 1st Lieutenant, May
27,1861; took active part in the battles
of Rappahannock Station, Thorough¬
fare Gap, 2d Bull Run, Chantilly,
South Mountain, Antietam, and Fred¬
ericksburg; lost his right leg from
above the knee. Entered the Veteran
Reserve Corps as Major, August 28,
1863.
Wm. H. Browne—Aged 39, from the
State of Kansas, entered volunteer ser¬
vice during the Mexican war; took part
in the battles of Vera Cruz, Cerro Gor¬
do, Molino del Rey, Chapultepec, and
City of Mexico; re-entered the volunteer
service June 14,1861, took part in the
battles of 1st Bull Run, West Point,
Golding's Farm, Chickahominy, Sav¬
age Station, White Oak Swamp, Glen-
dale, Malvern Hill, Fredericksburg (1st
and 2d), and Salem Heights; had his
knee and thigh fractured by minnie ball,
and is maimed for life. He entered the
Veteran Reserve Corps December 19,
1864.
S. Duncan Oliphant--Aged 39, from
the State of Pennsylvania, entered the
volunteer service April 19, 1861, as pri¬
vate ; took active part in the battles of
Mechanicsville, Gaine's Mill, White Oak
Swamp, and Malvern Hill, and now
suffering from paralysis. He entered
the Corps as Major, June 9, 1863.
John Mansfield—Aged 44, from
the State of Wisconsin, entered volun¬
teer service as Captain April 19, 1861;
took active part in the battles of Black¬
burn's Ford, 1st Bull Run, Fredericks¬
burg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and
the Wilderness; was wounded by min¬
nie ball in the thigh. Entered the Vet.
Reserve Corps Dec. 19,1864.
Charles F. Johnson—Aged 38, from
the State of Pennsylvania, entered the
volunteer service Sept. 17, 1861, as Lt.
Colonel; was actively engaged in the
battles of Seven Pines, Yorktown, Fair
Oaks, Peach Orchard, Savage Station,
White Oak Swamp, Charles City Cross
Roads, 2d Bull Run> South Mountain,
and Antietam; received two gun shot
wounds in the right thigh, one in the
left, and one in the groin. Entered
the Veteran Reserve Corps as Major,
June 8,1863, and became Colonel therein
on the 4th Dec. 1863.
John Ely—Aged 49, from the State of
Pennsylvania,entered the volunteer ser¬
vice as Major, 1861; took active part in
the battles of Young's Mills, Yorktown,
Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Fredericks¬
burg, Bernhardt' s Farm, Deep Run,
Bristow Station, Rappahannock Mills,
and Mine Run; had his right leg frac¬
tured by gun shot in action, and entered
the Veteran Reserve Corps as Colonel,
Dec. 14, 1863.
Oscar V. Dayton-Aged 38, from State
of New York, entered the volunteer
service April 22, 1861, as private; took
active part in the battles of Yorktown,
Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, White Oak
Swamp, Peach Orchard, Turkey Bend,
Malvern Hill, Chantilly, Antietam,
Morris Island, Wagner, Gregg, and
Sumter; was wounded in right arm,
thigh and face, the first by a ball, and
in thigh by shell. Entered the Veteran
Reserve Corps June 9,1863, as Major.

Frederick D. Sewall—Aged 39,
from the State of Maine, entered the
volunteer service Sept. 19,1861, as Cap¬
tain ; took active part in the battles of
Perry ville and the Fredericksburg cam¬
paign; suffers from incipient phthisis.
Entered the Veteran Reserve Corps as
Major June 18, 1863.
J. Egbert Farnum—Aged 41, from
the State of New York, entered volun¬
teer service May 15, 1861, as Major;
took active part in the battles of York-
town, Williamsburg, Fredericksburg,
Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, .Wapping
Heights, and Mine Run; was wounded
through both thighs by a minnie ball;
also was wounded in stomach and an¬
kle. Entered the Corps July 6,1864.
John R. Lewis—Aged 31; from the
State of Pennsylvania; entered the vol-

unteer service in May, 1861, as Ser'gt;
took part in the battles of Big Bethel,
Lee's Mills, Golding's Farm, Savage
Station, White Oak Swamp, South
Mountain, Fredericksburg, (1862 and
1863,) Salem Heights, Gettysburg, and
the Wilderness; received a flesh wound
from shell explosion in the right leg,
and a gun shot wound in the left arm,
necessitating amputation. He entered
the Vot. Res. Corps in September,
1864.
Geo. A. Woodward—Aged 31, from
the State of Pennsylvania, entered the
volunteer service in May, 1861; took
part in the battles of Mechanicsville,
Gaines' Mills, Glendale, and Gettys¬
burg; received a gun shot wound in
the right foot, and another in the left
leg, and entered the Vet. Res. Corps in
August, 1863.
George W. Gide—Aged 35, from
the State of New Hampshire, entered
the volunteer service as private, in
1861; took part in the battles of Cedar
Mountain, Rappahannock, Thorough¬
fare Gap, 2d Bull Run, Chantilly, South
Mountain, and Antietam; received a
gun shot wound in the thigh, produc¬
ing atrophy, and is lamed for life. He
entered the Vet. Res. Corps in May,
1863.
James C. Strong—Aged 39, from
the State of New York, entered the
volunteer service in April, 1861; took
part in the battles of Yorktown and
Williamsburg; was wounded in the
hip and lamed for'life at the latter; re¬
entered the service and served till
June, 1863. He entered the Vet. Res.
Corps in September, 1863.

LIEUTENANT COLONELS.
A. P. Cabaheb- Aged 36, State of Mas¬
sachusetts, entered the volunteer service
April, 1861, as private; took part in the
battles of James' Island, Bull Run,
Chantilly, South Mountain, Antietam,
Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and
Gettysburg; was wounded in head and
shoulder, and entered the Vet. Reserve
Corps Sept. 22, 1863.
Horace Neide—Aged 28, from the
State of Pennsylvania, entered the vol¬
unteer service May, 1861, as 2d Lieu¬
tenant ; took part in the battles of Me-
ehanicsville, Gaines' Mills, and Glen-
dale; was taken prisoner and paroled
July, 1862, and exchanged August, 1862.
He suffers from gun shot in left arm,
and entered the Veteran Reserve Corps
as Captain, June 8, 1863.
Ben. P. Runkle—Aged 29, from
Ohio, entered volunteer service April,
1861, as private; took active part in
Rosecrans' Virginia campaign, Shiloh,
Somerset, Monticello, Buzzard's Roost,
and Resaca; was thanked by command¬
ing General at Somerset for breaking the
enemy's line; received a gun shot
wound through the face, carrying away
the lower jaw, and is suffering from ef¬
fects of a shell wound in the right leg.
Entered the Veteran Reserve Corps as
Lt. Colonel, August 22, 1864.
C. G. Frendenberg—Aged 32, from
State of New York, entered the volun¬
teer service as Captain, in August, 1861;
took part in the battles of Yorktown,
Fair Oaks, Antietam, Fredericksburg,
Chancellorsville, Bank's Ford, Gettys¬
burg, Auburn, and Bristoe Station; re¬
ceived a severe wound in the left leg, an¬
other in the hip, one in the right arm,
and contusion from a piece of shell in
the right shoulder. Entered the Veteran
Reserve Corps as Major, December 10,
1863.
Fabian Brydolph—Aged 46, from
the State of Iowa, entered the volun¬
teer service as Captain, July 17, 1861;
took part in the battles of Mexico, under
Gen. Scott, as Sergeant, Pittsburg Land¬
ing, the attack and seige of Vicksburg,
and Arkansas Post, has lost his right
arm, and received a gun shot wound in
the neck. Entered the Veteran Reserve
Corps October 23, 1863.
Garricic Mallory—Aged 32, from
Pennsylvania, entered volunteer ser¬
vice in 1861, as 1st Lieutenant; took part
in the battles of Lewinsville, Munson's
Hill, Falls Church, Yorktown, West
Point, Hanover Court House, Fair Oaks,
Seven Pines, Peach Orchard,Savage Sta¬
tion, Winchester, Culpepper, and Sul¬
phur Springs; was taken prisoner before
Richmond and confined in Libby, re¬
ceived two wounds, one in left arm,
another in left groin. Entered the Vet¬
eran Reserve Corps July, 1864.
Newton T. Colby—Aged 34, from
State of New York, entered volunteer
service April, 1861, as 1st Lieutenant;
took active part in the battles of Ball's
Cross Roads,, Antietam, Chancellors¬
ville, and South Mountain; was disabled
by typhus fever. Entered the Veteran
Reserve Corps December, 1863.
L. C. Skinner—Aged 32, from New
York State, entered volunteer service
September, 1861, as 1st Lieutenant;
took part in the battles of Cedar Mount¬
ain, Bull Run 2d, South Mountain, and
Antietam; dislocated his ankle and
fractured the bone. Entered Veteran
Reserve Corps December, 1863.
John H. Bell—Aged 29, from New
York State, entered volunteer service as
private, April, 1861; took active part in
the battles of Bull Run, Fair Oaks,
Gaines' Mills, Savage Station, White
Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, Antietam,
Fredericksburg, and Yorktown; was
wounded in the left shoulder by minnie
ball, and had his scull fractured. En¬
tered the V. R. C. as Major, in June,
1863.
Benezet F. Fotjst—Aged 25, from the
State of Pennsylvania, entered the vol¬
unteer service in October, 1861; took part
in the battles of Cedar Mountain, Mitch¬
ell's Station, Rappahannock, White
Sulphur Springs, Thoroughfare Gap,
Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Get-

tysburg, and Fort Stevens; suffers from
partial paralysis of the right arm, con¬
tusion caused by shell at Gettysburg.
Entered the Y. R. C. November, 1863.
Allen Rutherford—Aged 29,from
New York State, entered the volun¬
teer service May, 1861, as Captain; took
part in the battles of Cedar Mountain,
Rappahannock Station, Thoroughfare
Gap, 2d Bull Run, and Chantilly; is
suffering from phthisis, and from gun
shot in the head received at 2d Bull
Run. Entered the Yeteran Reserve
Corps December, 1863.
Gilbert S. Jennings—Aged 48, from
New York State, entered volunteer ser¬
vice as Captain, April, 1861; took part
in the battles of Cedar Mountain, Ra-
pidan, Warrenton, Chantilly, South
Mountain, Antietam, and 1st and 2d
Fredericksburg; was wounded in left
leg and groin. Entered the Veteran
Reserve Corps September, 1863.
Carlyle Boyd—Aged 37, from the
State of New York, entered the volun¬
teer service in April, 1861; took part
in the battles of Big Bethel, Hanover
Court House, Gaines' Mill, the Seven
Days, 2d Bull Run, and Chancellors-
ville; received three bullet wounds:
one in the left arm, one in the left hip,
and one in the right hand, losing three
fingers; he was taken prisoner, car¬
ried to Richmond and exchanged. He
entered the Vet. Res Corps in Septem-
ber, 1863.
John B. Callis—Aged 37, from the
State of Wisconsin, entered the volun¬
teer service in July, 1861; took part in
the battles of Rappahannock, Gaines'
Mall, 2d Bull Run, Chantilly, South
Mountain, Antietam, Beverly Ford,
Chancellorsville, Sulphur Springs, Get¬
tysburg, and Fredericksburg; he re¬
ceived four gun shot wounds; the first,
through the thigh, second, in the side,
third, right hip, and the fourth, through
the right lung. He entered the Vet.
Res. Corps in May, 1864.
Frederick E. Trotter—Aged 27,
from the State of New York, en¬
tered the volunteer service in April,
1861, as private; took part in the bat¬
tles of Banks' campaign in the Valley;
received a gun shot wound in the left
arm and a shell wound in the right
foot. Entered the Vet. Res. Corps in
June, 1863.
D. C. Poole—Aged 37, from the State
of Wisconsin, entered the volunteer
service in May, 1861; took part in the
battles of Falling Waters, Cold Harbor,
and the Siege of Vicksburg; in the last
contracted chronic diarhoea and dysen¬
tery. Entered the Vet. Res. Corps in
November, 1863.
Robert E. Johnston—Aged 27,
from the State of Western Virginia, en¬
tered the volunteer service in April,
1861; took part in the battles of Me-
chanicsville, Gaines' Mill, and Fred¬
ericksburg; received wounds from
musket balls in mouth and neck, and
in the left shoulder from shell. He en¬
tered the Vet. Res. Corps in September,
1863.

Pennsylvania, entered volunteer ser¬
vice as 1st Lieutenant, July, 1861; took
part in the battles of Ball's Bluff, York-
town, Fair Oaks, Peach Orchard, Sav¬

Roads; was wounded in the right leg,
and contracted chronic diarrhoea. En¬
tered the Veteran Reserve Corps De¬
cember, 1863, as Major.
Benjamin F. Harris—Aged 34, from
Maine, entered volunteer service as
Captain, April, 1861; took part in the
battles of Lee's Mills, Williamsburg,
Savage Station, White Oak Swamp, 2d
Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam,
1st and 2d Fredericksburg, Brandy Sta¬
tion, and Gettysburg. Resection of the
hip, shortening it three inches, lamed
for life. Entered Veteran Reserve Corps
September, 1864.
A. E. Niles—Aged 49, from Penn¬
sylvania, entered volunteer service
April, 1861, as Captain; took part in the
battles of Drainesville, Mechanicsville,
South Mountain, Fredericksburg, and
Gettysburg; received a gun shot
wound through right lung, and another
through the left thigh. Entered Vete¬
ran Reserve Corps April, 1864.
David F. Foley—Aged 43, from
Pennsylvania, entered the volunteer
service as Captain, in April, 1861; took
part in the battles of WestPoint, Gaines'
Mills, and White Oak Swamp; contrac¬
ted chronic diarrhoea and dysentery.
Entered Veteran Reserve Corps.
A. Wiley—Aged 29, from Ohio, en¬
tered volunteer service as Captain,
April, 1861; took part in the following
battles: Pittsburg Landing, Stone Riv¬
er, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge,
■ and Brown's Ferry; has lost his left leg,
amputated above the knee. Entered

Wm. H. H. Beadle—Aged 27, from
Michigan, entered volunteer service ari

Thomas J. Barry—Aged 39, from

Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville;

John Devereux—Aged 32, from
Pennsylvania, entered the volunteer
service May, 1861, as 1st Lieutenant;
took part in the following battles:
Ball's Bluff, Yorktown, Williamsburg,
Fair Oaks, Savage Station, Malvern
Hill, 2d Bull Run, South Mountain,
and Antietam; had his left arm broken
by gun shot wound, was shot through
the body, and now suffers from paraly¬
sis of the lower extremities. Entered
the Veteran Reserve Corps- November,
1863.
James R. O'Beirne—Age unknown,
from the State of New York, entered
the volunteer service in May, 1801, as
private; took part in the battles of Wil¬
liamsburg, Fair Oaks, Glendale, Mal¬
vern, 2d Bull Run, Chantilly, Freder¬
icksburg, and Chancellorsville; receiv¬
ed a gun shot wound through body,
lung, and right fore-leg, also contused
wound in forehead, and another in the
right knee. He entered the Veteran
Reserve Corps in May, 1863.
Robert Avery—Aged 26, from the
State of New York, entered the volun¬
teer service in October, 1861; took part
in the battles of Cedar Mountain, South
Mountain, Antietam, Chancellorsville,
Lookout Mountain, (led storming col¬
umn,) and received gun shot wounds
through leg and jaw, and through the
thigh, necessitating amputation. He
entered the Veteran Reserve Corps in
April, 1865.

CAPTAINS.
Elisha B. Gates—Aged 39, from the'
State of Pennsylvania, entered the vol¬
unteer service in June, 1861; took part
in the battles of Drainesville, Mechan-
icsville, Gaines' Mill, and Charles City
Cross Boads, and in the latter lost his
left leg. Entered the Veteran Reserve
Corps in July, 1863.
Charles J. Hunt—Aged 40, from
the State of Michigan, entered the vol¬
unteer service as 1st Lieutenant, Au¬
gust, 1861; took part in the battles of
Yorktown, West Point, Fair Oaks,
Peach Orchard, Savage Station, Glen-
dale, Malvern Hill, Chantilly, and An-
tietam; in the latter had his left thigh
fractured by a gun shot. He entered
the Veteran Reserve Corps December,
1863.
Wm, Brian—Aged 49, from the State
of Pennsylvania, entered the volunteer
service as Captain in July, 1861; took
part in the battles of Meclianicsville,
Gaines' Mills, and Charles City Cross
Roads; was wounded in the latter, taken
prisoner, exchanged, fought at Freder¬
icksburg, again wounded and taken
prisoner; is wounded in right leg, in the
left breast, in the right thigh, had his
left leg amputated while prisoner, was
each time confined in Libby prison.
He entered the Veteran Reserve Corps
in September, 1863.
Wm. Shields—Aged 24, from the
State of Maine, entered the volunteer
service as private in April, 1861; took
part in the 1st Bull Run, Yorktown,
Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, White Oak
Swamp, Malvern Hill, 2d Bull Run,
Chantilly, and Fredericksburg; received
a gun shot wound in the left breast, ball
unextracted, left arm now useless. En¬
tered the Veteran Reserve Corps Au¬
gust, 1863.
J. W. Brockway—Aged 29, from the
State of Illinois, entered the volunteer
service in August, 1862, as private; took
part in the battles of Bennett's Ford,
and Petersburg; was wounded in right
forearm, and lost his left foot. He en¬
tered the Veteran Reserve Corps, April,
1S65.
Donald C. McNean—Aged 31, from
the State of Wisconsin, entered the vol¬
unteer service in May, 1861; took part
in the battles of Falling Waters, Nash¬
ville, BainbridgeFord, Perry ville, Mur-
freesboro, Stone River, Dug Gap, and
Chickamauga; received gun shot "wound
fracturing right leg, lost his left leg by
amputation in consequence of fracture
of the left knee. Entered Veteran Re¬
serve Corps in May, 1864.
Jno. R. Fellman—Aged 40, from the
State of New York, entered volunteer
service July, 1862; took part in the bat¬
tles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chan-
cellorsville, and Gettysburg; there was
wounded in the right leg, lost it by am¬
putation, and has gun shot wound in
the left leg. He entered the Veteran
Reserve Corps in April, 1864.
William H. Merrill—Aged 31, from
the State of New York, entered as pri¬
vate in the volunteer service in May,
1861; took part in the battle of Bull
Run, was there taken prisoner, was ex¬
changed in January, 1862, was at An¬
tietam and Fredericksburg; gun shot
wound in the left lung. He entered
the Veteran Reserve Corps in August,
1863.
Geo. E. Hall—Aged 25, from the
State of Pennsylvania, entered the vol¬
unteer service in April, 1861; took part
in the battles of Cedar Mountain, Conti
Station, Centreville, and 2d Bull Run;
was there wounded in the left leg. En¬
tered the Veteran Reserve Corps in
September, 1863.
Augustus Korats—Aged 35, from
the State of Illinois, entered the volun¬
teer service in April, 1861; took part in
the battles of Chattanooga, Banker's
Ferry, and Battle Creek, and received a
musket ball through his thigh, laming
him for life. He entered the Veteran
Reserve Corps in October, 1863.
Justin H. Chapman—Aged 25, from
the State of Connecticut, entered the

volunteer service in April, 1861; took
part in the battles of Bull Run, Win¬
chester, and Cedar Mountain, there lost
his right leg from gun shot. Entered
the Veteran Reserve Corps in Septem¬
ber, 1863.
Clinton Spencer—Aged 25, from
the State of Michigan, entered volun¬
teer service April, 1861; took part in the
battles of Bull Run, Gaines' Mills, Mal¬
vern Hill, 2d Bull Run, Antietam, Fred¬
ericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Get¬
tysburg; lost his leg through amputa¬
tion of right thigh, and the use of his
right arm by minnie ball. Entered the
Veteran Reserve Corps June, 1864.
James R. Stone—Aged 45, entered
the volunteer service from the State of
Hew York, March, 1862; took part in the
battles around Suffolk and the Black-
water, was injured in the left groin.
Entered the Veteran Reserve Corps
August 19, 1863.
George H. Brannix—Aged 32, from
the State of Pennsylvania, entered vol¬
unteer service in August, 1861; took
part in the battle of Yorktown. He
served five years in the regular army,
received a wound in the prenium at
Flint Hill. Entered the Vet. Res. Corps
September, 1865.
J. W. De Forrest—Age not known,
enlisted in the volunteer service in Oc¬
tober, 1861; took part in the battles of
Pattersonville, Ocquoquan, Fishers-
ville, Cedar Creek, and Port Hudson,
was there wounded. Entered the Vet.
Res. Corps in February, 1865.
L. J. Whiting—Aged 22, from the
State of Rhode Istand, entered the vol¬
unteer service in August, 1861; took
part in the battles of Williamsburg,
and Fair Oaks; was through the whole
seven days' fight before Richmond, and
there lost his right arm, amputated be¬
low the shoulder. He entered the Vet.
Res. Corps in December, 1863.
Wm. K. Hairland—Aged 33, from
the State of Pennsylvania, entered the
volunteer service in August, 1862; took
part in the battles of Fredericksburg,
and Chancellorsville, and was there
wounded in the left thigh, is now lame,
and entered the Vet. Res. Corps in May,
1863.
Wm. D. Vanderlip—Age not known,
from the State of Hew York, entered the
volunteer service in April, 1861; took
part in the battles of Hanover Court
House and Gaines' Mill, was there
wounded in the left hip by shell, and
by bullet in the left leg, was then taken
prisoner and not exchanged till Au¬
gust, 1862, and entered Vet. Res. Corps
in July, 1863.
Irving F. Wilcox—-Aged 23, from
the State of Ohio, entered the volunteer
service as a private, in 1861; took part
in the battles of Mechanicsville, Gaines'
Mills, Malvern, and 2d Bull Run; re¬
ceived a gun shot at Gaines' Mills
through the left arm, lost his left eye
by minnie ball at 2d Bull Run, and was
there again wounded in the left arm.
He entered the Vet. Res. Corps in Sep¬
tember, 1863.
Henry Camp—Aged 34, from the State
of Ohio, entered volunteer service as
private, in April, 1861; took part in the
battles of Shiloh, Murfreesboro, and Cor¬
inth ; shell wound in the head, and en¬
tered the Vet. Res. Corps in July, 1863.
Andrew Mahoney-Aged 40, from
the State of Massachusetts, entered the
volunteer service July, 1861; took part
in the battles of Ball's Bluff, Yorktown,
Fair Oaks, Peach Orchard, Savage Sta¬
tion, Helson's Farm, Malvern, Antie¬
tam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg;
was wounded in left arm and side, also
in the left lung. Entered the Vet. Res.

W. W. Rogers—Aged 33, from the
State of Pennsylvania, entered the
volunteer service as private, in July,
1861; took part in the battles of York-
town, Williamsburg, Kelly's Ford,
Brandy Station, Seven Pines, White
Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, Mine Run,
Manassas, and Gettysburg; wounded
at Gettysburg, July 3, 1863, in right
breast and left shoulder. Entered the
Yet. Res. Corps in February, 1864.
