CIRCULAR.
ORGANIZATION.
The Medical Department of the University of Nashville was
organized on the 11th of October, 1850, at a full meeting of the
Board of Trustees, by the unanimous appointment of the present
Faculty. By an arrangement made with the Trustees, the Faculty
are secured in the exclusive management of the Department; a fea¬
ture in its organization calculated to have the most beneficial effect
upon the prosperity of the School.
EDIFICE.
The Trustees, at a subsequent meeting, gave to the Department a
spacious building on College Hill together with ample grounds, for
the term of twenty years, which they secured by lease. This is the
East Wing of the Medical Department—fronting on Market street 76
feet, and towards the city 45£ feet. It is three stories high, with an
attic, affording ample accommodations for dissecting rooms, museum,
library, laboratory, and professors rooms. To this a centre building
is attached, containing two spacious lecture rooms, fifty feet square,
capable each of seating five hundred students. The lower room is
19 feet high and will be occupied by the Professor of Chemistry, and
temporarily by the Professors of Theory and Practice, and Materia
Medica. The upper room is 23 feet high and octagonal in the ar^
rangement of seats. In this the Professors of Anatomy, Surgery,
'Obstetrics and Physiology will lecture. The students enter the lec¬
ture rooms by two flights of stairs in a hall 14 by 50 feet, fronting
College street.

CLINICAL INSTRUCTION.
The State Hospital.—The beautiful buildings erected in the eity
many years ago for a Lunatic Asylum, and for a long time employed
as such, at the last meeting of the Legislature were converted into a
State Hospital. The 5th section of the Act creating the Hospital,
says, "the Professors and students of the Medical Department of the
University of Nashville shall have free access to the Hospital under
proper regulation for that purpose." The institution it is hoped will
by the next session of the. College offer many advantages to the stu¬
dent.
St. Jo fill's Hospital.—This in charge of the Sisters of Chari¬
ty, who have with a generosity worthy of all praise tendered its ad¬
vantages free of charge to the students of the Medical College. In
addition to these the Faculty have fitted up a suite of large rooms in the
College buildings exclusively for patients, where the most interesting
eases will be kept subject to the daily inspection of the student.—
They have also established a Dispensary at the College for out door
patients who will be examined before the students and prescribed for,
and they will have an opportunity of watching the progress of ths
case from day to day until it is dismissed. Surgical operations will,
as heretofore, be performed in the anatomical amphitheatre, before
the students. No Surgical Clinic, it is confidently believed, in the
United States is richer in the variety and gravity of its opera¬
tion than this has been in the last two sessions or promises to be
in the future. Notwithstanding the advantage of hospitals to Medical
Schools was once thought indispensable, yet long experience has
demonstrated that College Clinics are infinitely superior, and in con¬
sequence the two great Schools in Philadelphia have cut loose from
them and rely upon the Clinics at their Colleges for clinical instruc¬
tion. We shall follow their example so far as to spare ro pains or
expense in making our clinic all that can be desired, while free ad¬
mission to both of our Hospitals is secured to the students.
OPENING OF THE COURSE.
The third course of Lectures will commence on Tuesday, the first
of November next. The Anatomical rooms will be opened for Stu¬
dents on the first Monday of October, under the supervision of the
Professor of Anatomy.

PRELIMINARY LECTURES.
A preliminary course of Lectures will be given, commencing on
the first Monday in October. All the Professors will take part in this
course, and will lecture on topics which will not be fully discussed
in the regular Session. This is equivalent to a prolongation of the
term, while at the same time it does not impair the unity of the
course to those Students who do not come in till November.
This arrangement is a virtual extension of the term to fits
months.
REQUISITES FOR GRADUATION.
1. Three years regular study in the office of a regular physician.
2. Attendance upon two full courses of Lectures in a regular
school of Medicine, the last of which must be in this Institution.
3. Four years reputable and regular practice will be accepted in
lieu of one course of lectures, and such practitioner can become a
candidate for graduation at the close of his first course,
4. The candidate for graduation must write a thesis on some medi¬
cal topic and deposit it with the Dean by the first day of February.
5. The candidate must be twenty-one years of age, and of good
moral character.
