Gentlemen, I comply cheerfully with the r.equest made to me, to bear testimony to the character and abili- ties of Mr. J. W.^Irwin, a candidate for the office of Master of the School in your gift. Mr. Irwin is a person of clear intellect, of general attainments, full of energy and vigour. No subject appears be- yond the grasp of his mind. I can further bear evi- dence to his excellent conduct, amiable temper, and gentlemanlike feelings and manners. I thinb that the selection of such a- person would inside the prosperity of your School. To this testimony I have set my hand and seal this 17th day of March, 1843. FRANCIS JEUNE, ^.,C.L., Dean of Jersey ; Late Head Master of king Edward's . fSealO School, Binqingham. \ S-s * i ,."*•■ -\ ^ Tf'. , 'Jhf To tho Trustees of Sutton Coldfield School. i ; Understanding that Mr. William Jam^es Irwin, B.A., of this College, intends to offer himself a candidate for the Mastership of Sutton Coldfield School, I have much pleasure in informing the Trus- tees, that I consider him in every respect peculiarly qualified to fill so important a situation. During the time of his under-graduateship (upwards of three years) he was my pupil, and invariably conducted himself with the greatest propriety. I had many opportunities of judging of his pro-- ficiency in classics and mathematics ; and can most confidently state, that he is a good sound classical scholar, — and, though not extensively read in mathe- matics, he is, nevertheless, well versed in the ele- liientary principles, and quite capable of instructing boys preparing for the University. I ought to mention what in my opinion is of no slight importance in a school master, that he is possessed of a good and equable temper, though of sufficient firmness and decision. If he should be so fortunate a^ to obtain the situation for which he is now a candidate, I have no doubt he will discharge the duties of it in a man- ner equally creditable to himself and satisftctory to the Trustees. j*^^^ JOSHUA KING, L^.p., President and late Tutor of Queen'b College, and Lucasian Professor of Math9i]aatic8 in the University of Cambridge.
