Newspapers, in the present day of active competition for a liTelihood, are as absolute- ly Dooessary to a man of business, as hands aro to tho artisan, or credit to the trader, ''•out the information they conyey, no I ..s can bo successfully carried on, for be who attempts to dispense with them, will iiiOTitably find himself deficient in that knowledge which onableshiswiner neighbour to pass him in the race. Tho mere know- lodge of the course of several Markets, which tho commercial readers of newspapers obtain, is, perhaps, of the Arst importance. But, this is not all : without tho Newspaper he knows nothing of the changes of the routes of traffic, orof other alterations, which may materially affect the course of his transactions. Nor can he keep himself informed of the actual and probable improrements in laws, which regulate taxes, duties, and contracts between buyers and sellers. He may, for want of having seen an account of the proceedings in a late session of Parliament, which he could obtain in a journal, for a few shillings, lose hundreds of pounds, by a flaw in the form of a bill of sale or a note of hand. But whore is tho man, who has not, for himself and family, some desire for instructioiftTe- yond that which ho expects to turn to direct account in dollars and cents ? Who is there, being one of this great family of men of one blooa, made by the Almighty to dwell on all the face of the Earth, but would wish for some acquaintance with the events affect- ing his country, and even his race through- out the World, so that he may, at least, have his share in the common hatred of oppression and wrong, and his part in love for excellence and goodness ? Or, again, who would desire to know nothing beyond the village in which he resides, and the few miles of cleared land or forest which surround it, — to be Ignorant of the groat discoveries of ralifomia and Australia — to hoar nothing o\ the Crystal Palace, till the object of tho si ructure was at an end ? To obtain an acquaintance with theso passing events the Newspaper is the only moans. No Library, however extensive, will accomplish it ; for books relate to days gono by, in which we have only a second rate interest ; while the Newspaper warns us, and instructs us of what is passing in our own times, and concerns ourselves. It Is, therefore, the best schoolmaster for the youiig, and tho best Informant for the aged. It does not indeed givM a complete history of any epoch ; nor a profound exposition of any science, or system of philosophy. But what an index is to an extensive volume, that the Newspaper is to the great book of the world. It indicates the sources of fuller information ; or like tho showman at a Pa- norama points out those minute portions of the moving scene of life, which might other- wise be passed over. In the old times the greatest statesmen and most eminent men of science were celebrated for their extensive correspondence with foreign parts, and a great portion of their timo was abstracted from other pursuits to maintain this kind of communication. But the laborious corres- pondence of Lord Burleigh, or of Lord- Chancellor Bacon, in the reign of Elisabeth or James, could not supply one thousandth part of the information, which any back- woodsman in America can have, for One BoU lar per Annum, in a Weekly Paper. The Montreal Weeklt Herald, was the ftrst Canadian Newspaper over published at a price to moot tho wants of the rural population. It is still the largeU and best ; and if other compj titers are now in the field, tho proprietors beliove that those who ap- preciate the uuvantages of a cheap Newspa- per will have a special pleasure in helping tho men who first helped them to one.
