 GENTLEMEN,— . 
 
 In June last, after the meetings in reference to the 
 French Shore grievance^ I announced mj intention of 
 offering myself at the General Election now peading, as a 
 Candidate for the representation of this important District 
 in the House of Assembly. The law demands two years' 
 residence in the island, next preceding the Election, as part 
 of the necessary qualificatM>n. ^ As my residence in the 
 Island has not been of a continuous character, I find myself 
 disqualified, and have no alternative but to withdraw from 
 the contest. I beg respectfully to tender my warm and 
 sincere thanks to those friends who favoured my candida- 
 ture, and trust we shall yet see the day when Newfound- 
 land fishermeA sure free to fish in all the waters of this 
 Island free from the encroachments of the foreigner, and 
 when the Magistrates and Courts of Justice of this Colony 
 will be recognized as the only legal tribunals.
