King Solomon's Lodctet wrote to the W M , asking that the -matter between hfni^ self and Bro. Grant should be postponed for a month. Therefore, on March 12thj 1885, the evidence taken bjr the Boand of General Purposes was read in open Lodge, when Bro Grant denied U8ii« the words attributed to him in the charge, but admitted usink the word infidel. He then commenced to read an article from the press, which was objected to by Bro. Reeve, as it was not in evidence. The objection was sustained by the W.M. He then pro- ceeded to read extracts from the Secularists' Manual, peferriiM to the views held by Secularists. To this Bro. HarrifHHi also objected, but bis objection was overruled. The two brethren concerned in the charge, having fully explained their views, were directed to retire, when the members entered into a thorough discussion of the ques- tion as to whether W. Bro Grant had used the word 'inn- del " for the purpose of injuring Bro. Harrison. A ballot^ was then taken ami Bros. Grant and Hurison having been permitted to entef , were informed that Bro. The report of the Board of General Purposes was read at the meeting Of rhe Lodge held on April 8th, 1885, and showed that Bro. Harrison claimed to be an agnostic, which he defined as meaning " one who knows nothing beyond what is revealed by nature" He stated that he believed in God. the great Architect of the Universe, the Creator and Ruler of all things, and that he Believed God had rgvealed his will lo inan and would punish evil and reward virtue, but declined to answer when asked if he were a Christian and also when asked if he believed in the Bible. He admitted being > a member of the Toronto Seeular Society, and also that ander certain circumstances he would choose Freethought rather than Freemasonry. .- , ^ ^ „ When the report of the Board had been read, Bro. Harrison olalmeo, that, according to sections 1 and 3 of the Grand Lodge Constitution the charge was unconstitu- tional. A list of Masonic offences was read bv W. Bro. Grant. Who claimed that Bro. At the meeting 4ield on the 12th Febniary, 1885. a letter was read from the District Secretary, V . W Bro. Sander- Bon Pearcy, enclosing a copy of two resolutions passed at a meeting of the W M's. of the various city lodges and asking that the same be laid before King Solomon's Lodge, together with the necessity for calling such meeting. The resolutions were as follows :— " Resolved, that in the opinion of this meeting it i^ "advisable to form a Benevolent Board on which every "lodge in the city shall be represented and to which evcrj' " lodge In the citv shall contribute. "Resolved, that the various city lodges be requested "to grant the sum of 5 cents per head of tlieir membership "per month toward the Benevolent Board." These resolutions were duly ratified and also the by- laws of the proposed Benevolent Board, which wa^ to 6e known as the "Masonic Board of Relief of the City of Toronto." The object of this oraranizatidn was stated in sec. VL of its by-laws which reads: " The objctet of this Board shall be the relief of worthy " Masons not members of Toronto city lodges, and of i,he " widows and orphans of Masons who have not a special "claim on city lodges, and as far as possible the funds - " shall be granted to poor t^nd distressed members of the " Craft, strangers and sojourners in Toronto " The Treasurer's report for the year, which was ,read at this meeting, showed a balance of $454.91 on hand; assets, ? 11,824 94, and a share id hall furniture estimated at |640: labilities nil. , The meeting of April 9th, 1885, was called at the unusual hour of 7 .30 a.m. , for the purpose of balloting for four can- didates, and, as explained by the W M., in order to end the con tinued blackballing in the Lodge. Several of the mem- ber»appeared to thirtlrthat an unfair advantage might be taken of Bro. Harrispn, and that business bther- than the ballot might bKB transacted but the W.M. stated that the discussion of the disagreement between Bros. Harrison and Grant would take platoe at the regular meeting of the Lodge to be held the same evening at half -past 7 o'clock. The Secretary, Brt». Alfred Minister, however, felt" that the action of the W.M. in calling the Lodge together at such an unusuaMiQur was somewhat irregular, and in a letter to the KD.G.M., R. W. Bro. T- F. Blackwood, so expressed his Views on the subject. j ": This letter Was read in open lodge on July 9th, 1885, and after some discussion it was resolved :— "That this Lodge having heaird a copv of the letter of "Bro.
