As with gladness men of old Did the guiding star behold ; As with joy they hailed its light, Leading onward, beaming bright ; So, most gracious Lord, may we Evermore be led to Thee. As with joyful steps they sped • To that lowly manger-bed ; There to bend the knee before Him Whom heaven and earth adore ; So may we with willing feet Ever seek the Mercy-seat. As they offered gifts most rare At that manger rude and bare ; So may we with holy joy, Pure and free from sin's alloy, All our costliest treasures bring, Christ ! to Thee our heavenly King. 19 EPIPHANY. Holy Jesus, every day Keep us in the ijarrow way ; And, when earthly things are past, Bring our ransomed souls at last Where they need no star to guide, "Where no clouds Thy glory hide. How He calPd little children as lambs to His fold, I should like to have been with them then. I wish that His hands had been placed on my head, That His arm had been thrown around me, And that I might have seen His kind look when He said, Let the little ones come unto Me. Yet still to His footstool in prayer I may go. And ask for a share in His love ; And if I thus earnestly seek Him below, I shall see Him and hear Him above, In that beautiful place He has gone to prepare For all who are washed and forgiven ; And many dear children shall be with Him there, For of such is the kingdom of heaven. Who patient bears his cross below, He follows in His train. The martyr first, whose eagle eye Could pierce beyond the grave, Who saw his Master in the sky, And called on Him to save. Like Him, with pardon on his tongue, In midst of mortal pain, He prayed for them that did the wrong : Who follows in his train ? A glorious band, those chosen few On whom the Spirit came, Those valiant saints, their hopes they knew. And mocked the cross and flame. They met the tyrant*s brandished steel. The lion*s gory mane, They bowed their necks, the death to feel ; Who follows in their train ?
