A Committee has been appointed, at a meet- ing of the fubfcribers for the relief of the fufFerers at Montreal, for the management of the fubfcription, on which a beginning is made. A 2 ft S"4 r [ 4 ] # It is obfervable, that when any remarkable great £re happens, it 'is feldom known or traced out by what; accident it was occafioned. This creates a diffidence, the copfequenccs qf which are generally injurious to the public, as not knowing how to guard againft the like evil for the future j and to the fulFerers, it being un-r known who was in fault. Thefe gentlemen candidly inform the public in the moft circumftantial manner, concerning the tremendous fire which happened in May laft at Montreal ; and tjiey invite us in the moft perfuafive terms, on the ftrongeft reafoning, founded on fa6ls, that others may follow their example, by contributing each as he thinks proper to- wards the relief of the fufFerers ; and they tell us what bankers (b) receive fubfcriptions for this purpofe. The (i- ( >1 (b) Subscriptions arc taken in by the follo\ving Bankers: Sir Charles Afgill, "Nightingale, and Wickeriden, Mefrs. Cliffey Walpole, and Clarke y MeJ/rs. As they are conftraincd to afk, let us fhew them fuch a mark of our favour, as ftiall be of real fer- vice. This is the way to be beloved and honoured as their fmcerc friends and benefaaors. And we may with the utmoft reafon hope, hat we (hall fecure the hearts of thefc Canadians for many generations to come. In the mean while, let us ferioufly reflea, that no fyftem of morals, no inftitute of political precepts, can inftrua us fo forcibly as the Jaw of Ckrj/f, in our duty as citiziHS and fubje£fs. Enlightened as we are, yet dif- 'm^^^m v\ '.''■JH jSv^- (f) Thefc plaJM arc made of an archeen, or 2? inches, fqaare. nearly a» thick as a new milled (hilling, and fold for a f rublei a pood, or 1 1 b. for 361b. Englilh. They paint them on both fid3« : but thofe which are tinned arc the moil dorablj ,ind effeaual prefervativc. They fecure them, by turning one into the other at the edges for near 1 { inch. The inconve- uiency of noifc from raifi, is in a great me«'"ure removed by $ yvoper prelTitfe on the in^e, in three or four parts, which : divides and breaks the found. uaa^a I 15 1 ^£tedby fuch a variety of inclinations,- no other law can hold us in the bonds of peace and union, and reftrain us from the excefs of that felf-love, which is fo apt to plunge us into difficulties. If Chrijiian charity, joined to the diftribution of the bounties of heaven, by all the means that providenos has put into our hands, be the fureft criterion by which to judge of our own hearts, fo in our capacity as fuhjeiis, to embrace occafions as they rife, and fuccor each other when diftreffed, is the moft fubftantial virtue, and the foundeft policy. It is furely the moft demon- ftrative proof of the reality of our good difpofition to the community, and of our knowledge of the happinefs of our own fituation. And in proportion to our gratitude we may hope for the continuance of the bleflings we now enjoy at the hands of God, or unhappily be con- ftrained to renounce fuch hopes, as fuperior to the por- tion of virtue we poffefs. We are now invited to give an a£l:Ive demonftrative proof to thefe CanadianSy that the effence of Liberty con- fills in a tender regard to the fupport of each otiier. And as our civil and religious rights are originally founded in reafon, or a true difccrnment of what is juft and fit to be done, voluntarily, 9Jid upon the principles of obedience to divine laws, and the good offociety ; we may conclude, that by the firmnefs and valor arifing from thence we have ac- quired, and by their means we maintain, a fovereignty i|l fp many different pi ts of the earth with dignity and I Imputation, m reputation. At the fame time it muft be obvious, tha! avarice, difcord, or falfe ambition, may deprive us of the advantages which Providence hath put into our }iands. This is the fubftance of a fmall pamphlet j and upon the v/hoic, it feems to be an objeft fo very forcibly re- commended to individuals, both from fads, as well as fcafoning, and fo very proper in its own nature, that it will be much for our honor it ftiould fuccced. k m I J [ '7 1 »' f IN relation to the fafe methods of co- vering houfes to prevent the communi- cation of fire, fome perfons, now bound for ' Canada, intend to try if flate will ftand the froft. Iron-plate coverings are certainly the beft. As to turning the edges of the plates one within another, this method is pradtifed in Sweden, as well as Ruffia, but it is fubjedl to fome inconveniences, as being apt to break the edges. There is another 'method lefs coftly as to the labor, and which will probably anfwer much better, viz. to cover the boards which compofe the top of the houfe with two layers of brown paper, dipt in hot tar ; then lay on two iron plates, every other one, fp that the third may over-lap about an inch on each of the two : brown pap^r dipt in tar mufl be under the third, as well as the two firfl plates, and extended fo far as to come un- der the faftcnings of the plates, to cOn- folldate [ i8 ] folidate them. Thefe plates ihould be previoully punched with a proper fleel puncher, and fitted to each other. The plates being cut of equal lengths, the holes inay be made to anfwer to each other, Faften the work with copper nails, which will not rufl like iron. A puncher may be u(tdi to prepare the way through the paper, and the gimblet to follow^, otherwife the cop* per nails may be eafily refifled. The plates being painted, or tinned, and failened as above, will ftand all weather, and alfo refift vind better than in the method of turning thz edges. r J 1 1 p. S, March 20, 1766. T\iQ committer having thought it moft advifeable to fuf- pcnd the application for the relief of the Canadian poor fuiFerers, for fome weeks paft, have now the plcafure to inform the public, that Mr. Thornton and Mr, Han- way having been deputed to wait on the !Cing, with this cafe, his Majefly received them moft gracioufly, and with his ufual ckmency and benignity, was pleafed to give ^ i . 10 r J I % ' i 500/. towards the relief of thofe who arc in real diftrefs.
