The Society shall be designated by the name of <* The Society op Nova Scotia Barristbes." TI. The Society shall at its formation consist of all who are now Barristers af the Supreme Court of thc^Provincc, and who within one year shall subscribe the Rules, and comply with all the requisites of the institution. * III. The members of the Society shall be divided into two classes; The Senior Class of Benchers, and the Ju- nior Class. All those who compose the Society under the second rule shall belong to the Senior Class. IV. The Chancellor and the Chief Justice for the time being, shall be the Patrons of the Society, and the other Judges of the Supreme Court shall be Honorary Members of the Senior Class, with every right and privilege annex- ed to it. The Officers of the Societj shall coniist of a Secre- tary, Treasurer, and Librarian, who shall be chosen an- nually at the general meeUng held after Michaelmas lerau VL Any Barrister after the expiration of one yeap from the d&in of the institution, or who may be call- ed to the Bar at any time after the formation of the So- ciety, shall be eligible into the Society as a Member of the 2nd Class by ballot at a general meeting ; but the name of every candidate shall be proposed by a member at a precejfding general meeting, and no one shall be ad- mitted against whom thei-e shall appear on the ballot at least one third of the rotes of the members present. Eve- ry Member of the 2nd Class shall after five years from hia mdmission into the Society, be received into the Senior Class ; provided always that if the Candidate shall be ex- cluded by four votes only, he shall have the privilege of appealing to a General Meeting o£ the Society, and hia •xclusion shall not then take place unless at least one tttird of the Members present shall appear against him. VII, The whole government, direction and superinten- dance of the Society, shall be vested solely in the Bench- ers, who alone shall attend the meetings of the Society, aad have the privilege of voting on any occasion. VIII. There shall be three general meetings of the Benchers held annually, one on the day after Easter Term, one on the day after Michaelmas Term, and the third on aome day during the session of the General Assembly, which shall be agreed on by the standing Committee, and oi which due notice shall be given by the Secretary : Spe- cial Meetings of the Benchers shall be held as often as the standing Committee require, and any member of the So- & j pi J ia mii i aiw #. . ^ nMk „ ciftty who wishes a special meeting to be held, may state his object in writing to the standing Committee, who it' they think it requisite shnll thereon call a meeting ; if otlierwise the business shall stand over to the next gene- ral meeting. All meetings shall be held in Halifax and not elsewhere. IX. No Fundamental Law shall be passed or altered and no measure carried at any meeting, unless at least ten of the Benchen shall be jn-esent, and unless at least two thirds of those present shall concur in the same. The rank and priority of the members of the Committee shall be establislied vhen it is formed, and it shall be the peculiar office of the chr^irman of this committee and in the ev«»nt of his absence the next in order, to enquire into the rt^ularity and propriety of every admission as Barris- ter or Attorney which may be moved for ; to guard against and oppose in the name of the S'ociety every irregular or improper admission, and to advance such objections in every case as may be thought expedient or necessary for the honor and credit of the profession ; and to act as the Advocate of the Society on all occasions before the Court. The fee to be received for each Student hy t Member of the Society shall be 100 guineas, to be paid on entrance into his office and not less ; leaving the mem- bers at liberty to take Students gratuitously if they please. XXVIII. Every encour^fament which the Society can offer, shall be given to those Students who serve under the Members of the Society. A reward not exceedmg m value five guineas, shall be bestowed upon any such Stu- dent who shall at or before the meeting after Michaelmas i^ Term, give inH the Secretary the best drawn up Report of the greatest number of cases of important trials or argu- ments, which shall have taken place in the Supreme Court during the year then preceding. XXIX. There shall be formed by the Benchers a tariflf of charges for conveyancing, for the business of a Notary Public and other fees and charges of Attornies, Solicitors and Proctors, not enumerated in the fee table Act of the Province ; and su h regulations shall be made relative to the fees and practice of Barristers, as may tend to in- crease the character and reputation of the profession ; which tariff and regulations when established, shall go- vern every member of the Society and shall be consider- ed as part of this Rule. XXX. The Society shall encourage as far as possible, suitable dress and habiliments for all members of the Bar, which when established shall be worn by every member. . XXXI. There shall be two annual dinners at Kalifax, to commemorate the Institution of the Society, one on the day after Michaelmas Term, and the other on that day during the session of the General /Vssembly on which the I \- 1 ^ 11 Genera! Meeting shall be held. At these members of both classes shall be present, but thi President and Vice Presidrut shall always be chosen from the Senior Class. The expense shall be bor^Hlili^ members attending the dinner. And every membnrWJii,^ in Halifax, and not at- tending (without a sufficient excuse) shall pay to the Trea- surer a fine of five shillings, unless he shall give notice to the Secretary three days previously of his intention not to attend. XXXII. All Members of the Society becoming such under the f,nd Rule, shall pay the sum of five guineas in- to the hands of the Treasurer. Future members on ad- mission in^o the 2nd Class shall pay the Sum of two gui- neas, and the further sum of three guineas on being re- ceived into the Senior Class. XXXIII. There shall be paid by all members the sum two guineas r.nnually, ts long as their names siiall conti- nue on the Books of the Society. XXXIV. Any member offending against the Rules of the Society, shall be subject to its censure's ; and in case of repeated or gross offences, shall be subject to the igno- miny of expulsion from it, and of havmg his name erased from the Books of the Society, with the cause of his ex- pulsion entered thereon. But no member shall be expel- led, unless at least fifteen members of the Senior Class are present and unless two thirds of those present vote for such eJ^pulsion. • lJ.
