 Tuv. follo-ving sketches were made on fhc Coasts of Xowfoundland and Labrador in the summer of 1857. 
 They oit here given just as they were taken; and therefore, though not pretending to ehihoratc finisli, at 
 least have the merit of representing the impression which they made at the time ou the skct'her. They 
 may also seiwe to show what is the character of tlie scenery of a coiintrj- very little known, aud often very 
 much underrated.

 little beyond a succession of those lofty cliffs of slate, which induced the Northmen in the tenth century 
 to give it the name of Helluland (Slate land). 
 
 The vessel seems to be running right for this wall of rock ; mifil, when close upon it, a naiTow 
 entrance is found between heights from UOO to 700 feet high, which being passed, the harbour is opened, 
 whose landlocked waters are covered with shipping, and the enclosing hills with the buQdings of St. John's! 
 As you go up the harbour the town is mostly on your right ; ou the left is a loftv range of hills covered 
 with forest, consisting of different species of .spruces and pines, with ;i sliglit sprinkling of birch, m<mutain 
 ash, and ahler ; bel\.re you the slopes of the Vidley are covered with cultivation; behin.l is a rugged r.mge 
 of rocky heights, which fonns tlie back ground of Plate ;J. 
 
 Platks II Axn III. St. lobn'ii. The (brmer of these views is takc^ii from the hill, near Fort TowTishend. 
 The Cathedral forms the centre of the sketch, halfway up lli<. steep side of the hill idong vliidi the town is 
 'milt. Over the Cathedral are seen the Narrows vas the entrance to (he liarbour is called), and the waters 
 of the Atlantic. 
 
 The Cathedr.al (see Frontisjiiece' has only its nave completed, wliicli was consecrated on St. Mattliew's 
 Day, I80O. The architects were Messrs. Scott aud Moffat. 
 
 PiAiT IV. (Ouibi Uibi "fnlu. Tliis is a sheet of water about a mile and a half long, and half a mile 
 broad, lying to the North of the toA\-n of St. John's. It unites on its shores very different sorts of seem ry. 
 At one end is a suburb of St. John's, and green fields, at the other a range of rocky hills partly covered with 
 liii.ir original forest. 
 
 Pi.ATK y. Pfttn jOavbciur. This settlement, ID miles Soutli of St. John's, is well known for its gr.nnd 
 seeneiy. The hill above the church is a noble feature: and the waterf.dls and lakes higher up the valley 
 are well worthy of the pencil. On the hill opposite the churdi is a cerious roek. which Ih-iidical anti(|UariJs 
 would call a Logan stone. Another such may be found amon;,' the 1 
 Vidi Lake.

 10 miles West from St. John's, ou the Eastern shore of Conception Bay. Tlie descent to it from the 
 Eastward is one of the most beautiful scenes in the neighl)oiuliood. You wind down a long hill, having a 
 river full of cascades ou the right, and lotly heights on botti sides, whose slo[)es arc partly covered with 
 forest, and partly In'oken into cliffs. About halfway down the descent, on a suddiMi tuni you catch sight 
 of the cliurch (see Tlato) standing on it-» own hill overlooking the river, which wa.shes its' base. In the 
 distance are seen the cliffs of Bell Isle.
