TiiF Y K LiTKRAUY and Philosophical Sociktv, is instituted for the purpose of promoting Literature and tScience, and of Developing the resources of the Coionv, by facilitating the commuuication otany acts or discoveries connected with its civi! and natural Mstory, and its general productions. ^iid The Society shall consist of Members, Ho- norary Members, Corresponding Members, and Sub- scribers. 3rd Two Guineas annual subscription, shall consti- tute aMember, and one Guiui;^ a Subscriber. OfiU Election of the Officers and CmnmitUe. Thcj Patron of the Society shall be elected dur- ing hid residence in the Province. The President, four Vice-Presidents, Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, Curator of the Museum, Curator of the Apparatus, Treasurer, and a Commit- tec of tiftecn other members, siiall be annually elected by ballot. « . , The President and two Senior Vice-Presidents shall retire annually. i ^,1 i ^jwmjms^ m 2 Persons of di5>tiactiou either as to rank or literary attainment, not being resident in this Town, may be elected by the Society as Honorary or Corresponding Members, on the recommendation of the Committee. They slmli not be called on for any entrance money or subscripHon. Such Members however shall not have any interests in the property of the Society. Administration. 4th. To conduct the business of this Society, there shall be chosen at the General Annual Meeting, a President, four Vice-Presidents, a Treasurer, a Se- cretary, a Corresponding Secretary, a Librarian and two Curators, with fifteen others, who shall, together with the Ofiicers form a Committee of management. 5th. The Annual Meeting shall commence at seven o'clock in the evening, or as soon after as nuie Mem- bers shall be present. The report of the Committee for the preceding year sha'^ be read ; the President or Vice-President shall thcc quit the Chair, and a Gentleman, not of the Committee, shall be called to it. The Officers of the Society shall be elected by bal- lot ; and then as many Members as are necessary to complete the Committee. A List of the Members of the Society shall be de- livered to each Member present, who shall mark off the required number of names ; in the event of an equal number of votes, the senior Member, in point of admission to the Society, shall have the preference. If any Member so elected, shall refuse to act, a new ballot shall take place. % T i Gth.. The OtTicors of tlic Bocitity and tlu^ Meinbcrs of the Committee of the preceding year may be re-elec- ted, except the President, and the two Senior Vice Presidents. The President, 7th. The President shall take the Chair at all meet- ings of the Society as well as of the Committee, (when he is present.) He shall enforce the Laws of the Society. In the absence of the President the chair shaU be taken by one of the Vice-Presidents, or some Oliicer or Member of the Committee. The President or Chairman shall have the casting vote, when the sufi'rages are equal. TJie Treasurer. 8th. The Treasurer sliall receive all the subscrip- tions of the Society ; which shall be considered due, and to be paid on the second Monday in July. He shall pay all bills approved of by the Committee and signed by the Chairman. He shall keep a Book of receipts and payments, which shall bo produced at all meetings of the Com- mittee ; and any surplus money for which there shall be no present occasion, he shall dispose of as the Committee shall direct. He shall submit his accounts to be audited by two Members of the Committee chosen for the purpose, after which they shall be read before the annual meeting. i w m m H The Secretary. Gth. The Secretary shall attend all meetings of the Society and tho Committee, take minutes of all the proceedings, send notices of meetings, receive sub- scriptions, and pay the same into the hands of the Treasurer. He shall be authorised to nominate an Assistant Secretarv, being a Member or Subscriber, who shall officiate 'for him according to his directions. But the Secretary shall be responsible for the conduct of his Assistant, in matters relating to the Society. The CoTTCsponding Secretary, 10th. The Corresponding Secretary shall communi- cate with other Societies and Individuals on scientific subjects, and shall submit such communications to the Society. The Curators and Librarian, 11th. The Curators and Librarian shall have charge of the Society's Rooms, apparatus, books and all other property. One of them shall attend when- ever any part of the apparatus shall be wanted for the lectures or readings ; each shall keep a book with a list of the articles under his charge, and such remarks concerning them as may be judged expedient. Farther Duties of the Committee, 12th. The Committee shalt superintend and direct the affairs of the Society. They shall be allowed to make minor regulations, not being contrary to the spirit of these Laws, but such regulations shall not be considered as of a per- manent nature, till sanctioned by the Society, at a special or annual meeting, according to tho usual form. .!i i !l ray i 5 13th. The Committee shall be empowered to pub- lish occasionally, such papers, read before the J?oae- ty as they may deem creditable to tlie Institution, and uscfui to the Public, provided it has the appro- bation of tiie Gentleman who communicates the paper. 15th. The Committee shall assemble every alter- nate Friday, an hour before the time appointed for the Gencrii IMecting, or as often as the busmess of the Society shall require, and five shall be a sufficient number to transact business. The minutes taken of the business of the evening shall be signed by the Chairman. 16th. An extraordinary meeting of the Committee may be convened, at any time wpon the requisition of one of its Members stating the purpose thereof, ad- dressed to the Secretary, who shall issue notices, at least three days pircvious to such meeting. 17th. The Committee shall submit a report of its proceedings, and of the state of the Society to the annual meeting. Admission, Duties, Privileget, S;c. of the 3Icmhers and Subscribers* 18th. Every person proposed for admission into the Society as a Member, shall be recommended by three Members, whose names together witli that of the person nominated, with his place of residence, shall be hung up in the Society's Rooms fifteen days. at the expiration of which time the Members thall ballot for his admission, I I I ^J I ii / ' ■■I 6 19th. lictbru the admission of any Mrniber he shall subscribe to the Laws of the ISocioty, according to the form annexed in the presence of the Secretary, and upon his ceasing to be a member, he shall forfeit all claims to the benetits and property of the Society. (Form to he Observed,) I hereby promise that I will observe the Laws and regulations of the York Literary and Philosophical Society, and that I will endeavor to promote its inte- rests and honour. Signed 20th. Each Member shall be entitled to admit two persons only, to the Lectures or readings of the So- ciety by a printed order, signed by himself, specially dated, and bearing the Christian and Surnames of the persons to be admitted, with his or her place of abode. 21st. Members of Literary and Philosophical So- cieties, or of any association, having for its object the diffusion of useful knowledge, shall be at liberty to attend any of the public lectures of the Society, by obtaining a ticket of admittance from the President, or one of the Vice-Presidents, or the Secretary. Subscribers. 22nd. Every Gentleman proposed for admission as a Subscriber, shall be recommended by three Mem- bers, according to the following form. The Members of the f^ociety whall meet on the fust Friday in every month during the vacation at seven o'clock in the evening:. 28th. The Lectures shall conmience on the first Friday in October, and end on the last Friday in April. 29th.
