'• Index. PREFATORY NOTICE. The By-laws of the City of Toronto, never having been uniformly printed or published, but for the most part existing only in manuscript, from the date of the incorporation of the City in 1834, a Board of Commissioners was appointed by the Municipal Council, on the 14th May, 18GC, to have the same " carefully examined, and after such examination, duly revised, consolidated, and published in a con- venient form for reference.'" The labours of the Commission were not brought to a close until the commencement of the present year, the Commissioners explaining in the preface to the large volume they have issued, that "from the very nature of the work entrusted to them involving a patient and careful examination of between four hundred and live hundred By-laws, the result of civic legislation extending over more than a third of a century, and the diflQculties they necessarily experienced amid their other public and private avocations, in devoting continuous applica- tion thereto, the accomplishment of a work, the necessity and importance of which is universally admitted, has occupied more time than was at first anticipated." vi PREFATORY NOTICE. In the same preface they slate that " they con- f-idcrcd it an appropriate introduction to furnish a schedule of the names of tho members of the Council and leading Civic Officials during the long series of years, the legislation of which has been under consideration, thus rendering it a matter of easy reference to ascertain, on the one hand, the names of the members of Council at the time any By-law was passed, and to preserve, on the other, a record of useful and for the most part gratuitous service rendered to the City by its civic repre- sentatives and officials, many of whom have long since passed away." Hence the preparation of the contents of the following pages, which apart from the primary object of the Commissioners, in compiling them, it has been felt desirable, before the distribution of the type, to preserve as a Civic Record in the convenient form of this pamphlet.
