The first object of the traveller is to find a comfortable hotel ; and we cordially recommend the following as affording every accommodation requisite to make the guest -'^athome." Toronto is justly celebrated for its hotels; and the "best the market provides," is always on the table to appease the appetite : — The ** Queen's," on Front Street, and the " American," corner of Front and Yonge, have earned a continental celebrity. The " Metropolitan," Thomas Brown, proprie- tor, offers the advantage of a central location, being situ- ated on the corner of Bay and King Streets. Elgie's Hotel, 40, King Street West, is a capital house, and the host is a capital fellow. The Commercial Hotel, 94, Nelson Street, Henry Lemon, proprietor, is a first-rate house, within r few minutes' walk of the market ; and, as a farmers' inn, affords every accommodation. The stables are among the best in the c'^y, and the terms as reason- able as can be expected. The Globe Hotel. James Page, proprietor, 163, Yonge Street, is an excellent house, and is favourably situated. Visitors will meet with the best accommodation at the most reasonable rates. W. Lennox's Hotel is conveniently situated on the cor- ner of West Market Square and Front Streets. The house is commodious, and the popular landlord will provide for the comfort of his guests in a way calculated to secure their future patronage. Duck's Hotel, 81 Colborne Street, in the vicinity of the market, is a good and comfortable house, and the proprie- tor will spare no exertions to render the stay of his guests agreeable. The bar is supplied with the best. Charges moderate. PRIVATE BATHS, AT CITY BATHS. •iMKiriiiiiin Mm ii i i ia i l i i i 6 TORONTO GUIDE. We refer our readers to advertisements. The Terrapin Restaurant is known "all over" as a fashionable resort, and its popu- larity is the best test of its excellence. The *< Fountain" is also a favorite and deservedly so. F. Smith, No. 85, Yonge Street, is a quiet cosy nook, where the traveller in search of refreshments will find every thing necessary. John Cornell, West Market Square, near Front Street, is a well known long established saloon keeper, and as a caterer has few equals, James Smith, of the Union Sta- tion Restaurant ; and F. The baths are private, and fitted up with every convenience, and the gentlemanly manager, Mr. Donald Grant, is always ready to attend to the requirements of visitors. The ladies' baths are first class, and managed by an experienced female attendant. A barber's shop is attached to the premises ; and, if a gentleman is inclined to add the luxury of a " little drop," Mr. Mossop, next door, is always on hand. Comfortable baths can also be had at James B. Marshall's Saloon, 54 King Street west. A great deal of respect is paid to an individual who enjoys the felicity of being well dressed ; and the inability of publish- ers, poets, printers and politicians — hereditary victims of impecuniosity — to wear anything but seedy apparel, is, no doubt, the great reason why those unfortunates are re- garded as suspicious characters. To the favorites of for- tune, who possess the readi/, we beg to state that for fancy, fashionable, good and useful clothing, our establishments may possibly be equalled in Paris or London, but we recommend the discerning public to call and see and purchase, and then decide. By this system the Student hecomes an M ual Merchant, recording in the Day Book, Cash Book, and Bill Book the day's trausactions, Journalizing and Posting the same, thus obtaining a clearer and mora perfect knowledge of the science of Book-keeping, than mere theory can ever give. A young man, graduating at this Commercial College, is examined and his Diploma signed by a Board of 'Examiners composed of Practical Business Men—a sufficient guarantee of efficiency and employment. We would particularly call the attention of young men, acting as Salesmen, to the advantage of a sound knowledge of Book-keeping and Commercial Calculation. We have been almost daily applied to by the Proprietors of Retail Stores for Young Men having a thorough knowledge of Double-entry Bookkeeping, and who would at the same time, when not employed with the Books, act as Salesmen. Persons thoroughly competent to act in both capacities, could command, not only the salary of a Salesman, but an additional allowance as Book-keeper. We have numerous Sets of Books particularly a' apted to a Retail Business, which, if any young man masters thoroughly, he will iind no difficulty in keeping the Books, by double-entry, of any establishment, however extensive.
