Ill the yeiir 1807, Monsieur Ambroise '''liomas, the great French Composer, was engaged to write a Qriiiiil (tpeni lor tlie Inipeiiiil Upera Huuse of Fans. The subject selected for the occasion was '•Hamlet;" the cullaborateurs of Mr. Thomas were the celebrated Dramatic authors, M. M. Barbiere Hnd Carre. The announi^ement of a new work to be produced at the Imperial Opera House, by so renowiifd a compoMur as Muns. AmbroisK Thomas, anl such popular authors as M. M. Barbiere and Cairo, created great excitement among the critics and operatic liabitucs of Europe. The general opinion was, that Hhukespcaiv's "Hamlet" was an impossible subject for an Opera. However, the (Jpera mis com posed. When the rehearsals commenced it was discovered that none of the Prima UoNNAs (eminent im thfy were) could at all realize the ethereal and poetical "Ophelia." Sevecal uf them rehearsed the role, and gave up in despair. It v/as then decided, in theatrical parlance, "to put it on tlie shelf ;" and such would have been Its fa^j, but for a hnppy thought of the cclebmted music pulilisher of Paris, Mr. Hciigel, who waited upon Mle. Christina Nilsson and showed her the score of the Opern. On perusing the same, she became enamoured of the part, and consented *o undertake it. The composer, tlie author, and the opera-world of Faiis were delighted. A large sum of money was paid by the Director of the Grand Opera to the Theatre Lyriqne to release Mile. Nilsson trom her engagement at the latter Theatre. We need scarcely inform our readers that the Opera of " Hamlet" is one of the most successful ever produced on the French Lyric Stage ; that the French opinion of Mile. Nilsson was, that she gave a poetic reading to Sh^espeare's ideal cliaracter — Ophelia — that no other artist of the present day could give, and tiiat tho French opinion has been endorsed by the British public. The recent revival of Itossini's "Otello,"in which M'lle Nilsson's impersonations of "Desdemona," and, last week, her marvellous performance of Goethe's "Migaon," has confirmed the opinion created by her in the Opera of "Hamlet," that in the Poetical Lyric Drama, M'lle. Nilsson is without a rival.— Thk London "Daily News," July 4th, 1870. (See Concert Libretto, page 7.) PART SECOIVD. 8. DUET " Madre non Dormi " Verdi n Trovatore.
