ITS HISTORY. The first settlement in what is now the City of RelL'ville was made just a hundred yeirs ago I)y United Empire Loyalists. Until iSi6 it was called Meyers' Creek, so called in honor of Captain Meyers, who in 1790 built a mill, the only one between I'ort Hope ami Nap.inee, on the site of what is now known as Hicccker's dam. In 1816 its name was changed to Belleville, in honor of Lady Bella, wife of(J()vernor Gore. It was incor- porated a town in 1850 and a city in 1878. Its population now is over ton thousand. " Beautiful for situation " is a fitting descrii)lion ol it, with the waters of the historic Bay of Quinte on its south, and the River Moira running in the valley formed by the iwo hills upon which it is built, and its inhabitants have added much to what nature has done, the avenues of maple trees which adorn almost every street, making it a very attractive place to visit or dwell in. ITS METHODISM. The earliest pioneer Methodist ministers visited this place, and the good seed the.i sown has brought forth a bountiful harvest. In 1817 the first church built in Belleville was built by the Methodists, and in 1822 the iirst Methodist Sunday School was organized. Now there are five churches with four pastors ; one person in every nine is a member of the Methodist Church, and one-third of its inhabitants are adherents of this church.
